I have had the name "Fruitcake Fanatics" in my mind for quite some time now...but I needed a font that suited the name...then one day...actually last Wednesday, I was playing around with some letters (which eventually would turn out to be this font!) and suddenly it struck me: I got the letters for my Fruitcake Fanatics font! Another story could be - what does the name mean?! Well, to tell you the truth, I don't know - but what I do know is that the font is playful and unpredictable and loads of fun!

I do groceries a couple of times a week. When I am shopping for food, I always read the ingredients list; I don’t want too much sugar, nor palm oil, trans fats or a lot of E numbers. It used to be quite hard finding products that didn’t contain artificial flavours or colouring, but it is getting better. Artificial Flavour is an anti-ode to the time we couldn’t get enough of the stuff - it is a handmade, all caps font which comes with extensive language support and a sweet set of alternates.

I have always been frustrated when looking for a bold condensed face. The choices were the usual? Helvetica Bold Condensed, Univers Bold Condensed or Alternate Gothic #2... all rather dated. I was looking for a really unique, clean, uncluttered sans serif face, so I decided to design one. I have since adapted it to many logo designs. So, in my terms and conditions, I decided to permit the modification of the letter forms for logos and monograms, but logos and monograms only, not the typeface in normal usage.

Marazion takes its name from a Cornish seaside resort in the UK's West Country. It was inspired by some hand lettering I came across at a local inn on the seafront where I was enjoying a lunchtime pint (always a good place to seek inspiration in my experience!) Being based on a hand drawn script Marazion is a smooth, fluid and rounded font that is both fresh and distinctive. Personally, I think it is well suited to applications in food and fashion, but in practice its uses are more or less universal.

The English roundhand has always occupied the central position in the group of faces appropriate to the social printing handled by engravers, and their contemporary imitators, thermographers. At the end of the nineteenth century when engraving was mechanised by the pantographic engraving machine, the traditional roundhands found their way onto pantographic pattern plates. Embassy is a traditional roundhand of vigorous contrast with straightforward capitals with ball terminals; it was transferred from such an engravers’ pattern plate to the Fotosetter at Intertype about 1955. Alphatype’s Yorktown is similar, but appears to have less contrast.

This reinterpretation of Caslon Rounded showcases one of the early attempts of type foundries to create a novelty ‘rounded’ typeface for general use. While the lettering might easily convey a more modern look of 1960s or 1970s pop typography, its roots definitely lay in the later part of the 19th Century and the heyday of wood type design. Wood Rounded JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Say g'day to Ainslie Sans, insigne Design’s new typeface. Like its big brother, the new face incorporates a mix of influences from Oz, although Sans is pared down from the original semi-serif. The original Ainslie was inspired by Mt. Ainslie and the city of Canberra’s inner suburb of the same name. Canberra is Australia’s capital--a planned city designed by American architect Walter Burley Griffin. Griffin’s style and geometric design for the city, which include Mt. Ainslie, are now also the same structure that make up the foundation of Ainslie Sans. Unlike the original Ainslie family member, though, Ainslie Sans does away with much of the aboriginal-inspired touches by eliminating the semi-serifs, forcing the font to borrow more heavily than its predecessor from Canberra’s distinct, geometric design and style. The idea for Quirky was born while I was looking at a book of etchings by British artist Graham Clarke. His signature, crawling spider-like across the page, fascinated me with its casual, almost messy, inky dark and light drama. I started scribbling the alphabet as I imagined he would write it, based on his signature, then continued, adding curls, making the characters more angular, and refining the dramatic play between dark and light. Finally, Quirky appeared. Apparently casual, Quirky is, in fact, a true connected script. Quirky is characteristic of contemporary handwriting: It appears loose, angular, unstructured, and free, while maintaining good form and legibility.
