I was listening to an Opeth album called Blackwater Park. By the time I had decided that this font needed some swirls, the band was playing a song called The Drapery Falls - which has the word ‘spiraling’ in it (see poster 2) - and the name was born. Spiraling down is a surprisingly elegant font (given its roughness). I probably wouldn’t set a whole text in it, but it will really stand out as a titling font for packaging or book covers.

Eloisa is based on the penmanship of Andrea Stuart's eponymous aunt. The slow, meticulous strokes with which Eloisa writes is the result of formal (and meticulous) instruction in cursive writing back in her secondary education in an exclusive all-girls school. Greenwood is a monospaced, cursive typewriter script, based on a typewritten letter from a Mr J. G. Greenwood Esq. to a branch of the National Westminster bank in Oxfordshire, Great Britain, dated 6th June 1904. This uncommon style of typeface is suitable for many tasks as it not only has the functionality of a monospaced font but it has a quirky distinctiveness that lends itself especially well to any setting that requires a decorative font that reads surprisingly well in extended text.

Humanist 531 is the Bitstream version of Syntax (Stempel, 1968) by Hans Eduard Meier. A humanist sans serif typeface with an optically even thickness of the line which interprets a humanist old style type of the Renaissance. Its vertical strokes are inclined to the right by one degree. Serves well in text and display typography. Cyrillic version was developed at ParaType in 1999 by Isay Slutsker and Manvel Shmavonyan and was awarded Diplomae at Kirillitsa'99 and "bukva:raz!" type design contests.

F .H. Ernst Schneidler, type designer and teacher, originally designed Schneidler Old Style in 1936 for the Bauer foundry. Stempel Schneidler is based on the typefaces of Venetian printers from the Renaissance period and possesses their grace, beauty, and classical proportions. The Stempel Schneidler, a completely reworked and tuned font family made by D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt, is a fine, legible text font that also works well in display. One of Schneidler's more unique features is its question marks.

This is a cute story about a mother and her son. :) About a decade ago my own mother got very interested in my work. She used to say my letters had so many swirls and dazzling swashes, and suggested my job seemed to be very fun. She wondered if she could ever try to make her own alphabet... Well, she is a civil engineer and a maths teacher, and appeared to be a little tired of exact sciences... I remember answering this, while she was listening with her typical tender look: -"Mamá... While type-design may be a really enjoyable thing to do, it also involves having a great eye and knowledge about the history of letters: nice curves and shapes require a meticulous study and, like it happens in many fields, practice makes perfect"-. Well, she raised her eyebrows at me. -"and so what?"- She didn't have any experience neither in the field of art nor in the field of graphic design so, I told her that if she really wanted to get into this she should borrow some of my calligraphic books from my beloved shelves in my office. So... she did. Some weeks after that, she came to me with many sketches made with pencils and markers: some letters where very nice and unique while others naturally needed some work. I remember she added ball terminals to all of her letters (even if they didn't need them) because that was one of the rules she imposed. After some back and forth, we had the basis for what would be today, ten years later, the seed of this lovely font Girasol. Her proposal was nice, something I was not accustomed to do, that’s why many years later I decided to watch it with fresh new eyes and finished it. While she was in charge of making the lowercase letters, I helped with the uppercase and also added my hallmark in the alternates, already seen in others of my expressive fonts. The result is an upright decorative font that follows the behavior of the copperplate nib with a naive touch that makes it really cute and useful for a wide range of products. Many alternates per glyph make Girasol a very fun to use font which will delight you. Above posters are a proof of that! This font is a gift for my mother, Susana, who, in spite of her exacts academic background, taught me that beauty can also be found in the imperfect. 1 NOTES (1) In my fonts I'm always in seek of the perfect curve. A text typeface design with completely isolated letters and extra emphasis on vertical feel and visual connectivity to aid easy reading. The Hallock font family is named after Homan Hallock, a New York based American type designer and typographer who created the first documented unified and isolated Arabic font design in July 1864. The Hallock font family has two styles, regular and left-slanted italic styles. This font family design follows the guidelines of Mutamathil Taqlidi type style with one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in the latest Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for the freely-connecting letters in traditional Arabic cursive text. Hallock employs variable x-height values. It includes only the Lam-Alif ligatures. Soft-vowel diacritic marks, harakat, are selectively positioned. Most of them appear by default on the same level, following a letter, to ensure that they would not interfere visually with letters. Tatweel is a zero-width glyph. Keying the tatweel key before Alif-Lam-Lam-Ha will display the Allah ligature. Hallock includes both Arabic and Arabic-Indic numerals, in addition to standard punctuations.

Thomas Jefferys (ca. 1710–1771) was the best-known map maker in 18th-century England, chiefly because he won (and hyped) the title “Geographer to King George III.” Jefferys was really more an engraver/publisher than a geographer, since he mostly relied on the cartographic materials of others. Still, his maps of the North American colonies were well known. Geographica is a legible, four-style serif family modeled after the neat hand-lettered place names and peripheral text on Jefferys’s maps. With its long serifs, tall x-height, and robust curves, Geographica somehow combines classic elegance with a whiff of coastline and sea. The italic styles have the slant and warmth of the hand-drawn source materials. And the typeface comes with a slew of distinctive map-based ornaments—including compass wheels and sailing ships. This evocative serif works well in both display situations and long blocks of text, whether on paper or screen. Edgar No. 9 is an original design by Alex Kaczun. Edgar No. 9 is a derivative work based on his Big Boy typeface series. It was designed specifically for display headlines, logotype, branding and similar applications. Primarily a display, this extremely versatile font has generous proportions, large counters and loose fitting which also allow the font to work well across a wide range of text sizes. Edgar No. 9 is a heavy baroque slab serif and although it shares the underling skeleton of 'Big Boy', it is a much more compact in overall proportions and spacing. A handsome bold headline font that works well in text as well as display sizes—ideally suited for publications and advertising. Alex plans to expand the font series to include a large range of weights along with corresponding italics numbering 1 thru 9, as well as, true small capitals and old style figures. In 1980, Peter Malutzki, Heidi Hübner-Prochotta and Manfred Prochotta founded the FlugBlatt-Presse and began producing broadsheets, which they called FlugBlätter and which also gave their press its name. They were mostly woodcuts or linocuts, combined with hand-set typography. When they finished the series in 1984 there were 67 FlugBlätter. During a Frankfurt Book Fair in the 1980s the collector Rob Saunders acquired FlugBlatt No. 37 along with other prints. Later they became part Letterform Archive, a non-profit museum and special collection library in San Francisco, which Rob Saunders founded in 2014. In 2021, Letterform Archive posted the FlugBlatt No. 37 on social media, where type designer Lena Schmidt saw it, immediately fell in love with it, and developed the plan to bring it into the digital world. After contacting Peter Malutzki – who is still working as a book artist today – and in close consultation with him, Schmidt translated the letterforms into a font series, Malutzki Initials. The three fonts can be used for black (single-color) text using the Regular style, or for multicolor text by applying different colors to the Letter Layer and Figure Layer styles.

Khatt tries to mimic the concept behind the meaning of the Arabic word Khatt: a straight horizontal line. The word Khatt is also the word for calligraphy in the Arabic language. Even though Khatt is a cursive style font it offers clearly distinguished and visually unified letter shapes in every position of a word. Khatt supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It comes with five weights, regular, medium, bold, light, and ultra-light. Each weight has normal and left-slanted “italic” styles. The script design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil Taqlidi style and utilizes varying x-heights. The Mutamathil Taqlidi type style uses one glyph per every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined by the Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for each freely-connecting letter in an Arabic text. Khatt includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. Like a “typographic picnic,” Typnic font system gathers many fonts with different flavors too, and you can enjoy them mixed or on their own. Typnic was drawn and calligraphed by hand and is made with eighteen typefaces, including three totally compatible yet different styles. It also has enhancement sets containing labels, dingbats, patterns and ornaments. The Headline style has six layered fonts that can be mixed in a wide variety of combinations to obtain powerful mastheads and headlines. It can be used to construct very nice advertising pieces. If you need to write informal texts, then use Typnic Script, which also comes in six variants and additionally has a complementary font with tails, double letters and ornamented ascenders.
