Comalle is an organic typeface that rescues some elements of handwritten script, but its stroke does not necessarily answer to a literal calligraphy structure. So Comalle could produce a powerful impact on the page, it was designed with thicker strokes than its counter forms. The objective is that the black of the letter fills the page and causes a fastest visual impact than typographies that balance blacks and whites. One of the most important tasks of the Comalle design was to think of how to handle the unequal percentages of blacks and whites in the typeface. The peculiar thing, is that the precision work of the letter does not make the blacks, but the whites; this is the reason why in one first instance it was very valid to start off designing in a very gross way, nevertheless, the majority energies are put in the details of the design of counter space. From the drained filling concept of forms Comalle was born, a typeface that pretends to enchant with its delicate counter space design and to impact with the heavy outlines which compose its form.

Squeezing yet more life out of the Revla skeleton! This is Revla Round, a child-friendly version of Revla Sans, completely overhauled so there's no chance of cutting yourself on any corners. Every rounded terminal and corner has been painstakingly drawn, rather than using a round-corners filter. OpenType contextual alternates make for text that is lively and bouncy, without the monotony of obviously repeating letterforms. It's shamelessly fun, but pretty serious at the same time. The range of weights can be used to maintain an even colour across different sizes - use lighter weights for bigger sizes and vice versa. Many decades back, churches, schools and other buildings with a need to display an outdoor message often chose a sign making system utilizing characters silk screened onto metal pieces in a block chamfer style. Each piece had a crimp in the top of the metal which formed a hook to fit over the existing rails of a message panel. This allowed for a finished sign to be displayed within minutes, and a quick change of information was not very time-consuming. A popular version of these signs provided white letters and numbers on black backgrounds. This was the model for Announcement Board JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. There are two different width blank panels on the broken and solid bars for those who wish to kern the letters tight to form a ribbon, however they were designed to have slight spacing in order to emulate the hand assembly of those vintage sign panels.

The script version of the typeface Viabella introduces us to the calligraphic side of the Berlin type designer and typographer Karl-Heinz Lange. The sketches for this script typeface, which resulted from the close cooperation with Veronika Elsner and Günther Flake, found their roots in sketch drawings which Karl-Heinz Lange had already drawn in the 1980’s. For the Viabella design, Karl-Heinz Lange drew the basic letterforms of the Black and Regular cuts with a brush. He then re-worked the drawings and transferred them on to tracing paper. The design studio Elsner+Flake in Hamburg cut these typeface extensions and later digitized them manually with the help of the IKARUS Sustem. With the Regular cut as a basis, Elsner+Flake extended the family with the Light version and interpolated and re-worked the Medium weight. The completion of the family was taken over by the type designer Björn Gogalla who had done the same kind of work on Rotola, a design which Karl-Heinz Lange had also created for Elsner+Flake. While Viabella was originally conceived as a headline typeface, its lighter weights can certainly be used for shorter text applications. The Black version creates powerful headlines with highly effective accents. With the help of swashes, which are available for all weights, the user can lighten up longer texts and add special character to titles. In contrast to pure headline fonts, Viabella has been enriched by an extensive complement of special characters. In addition to the Europa-Plus character set which allows setting type in over 70 latin-based languages, the user will find multiple versions of numerals as well as oldstyle figures, tabular and proportional lining figures, diagonal fractions, and a complete set of superior and inferior figures and fractions (60%). With such a rich character set, Viabella is not only ideal for many different uses in the areas of newspaper, magazine and advertising but it will surely be chosen for the design of greeting cards, invitations and other design projects within the privat sphere.
