I'm happy to present you my new Romanesque font from the Codex Gigas. The manuscript was created in the early 13th century in the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice in Bohemia. The codex was written in a handwriting atypical for the 13th century, which is actually a late version of the Carolingian minuscule. Texts about repentance and exorcism were written in large Majuscule (Square Capitals (Imperial Roman capitals written with a brush)). Majuscules first incised in stone more than two millennia ago, married to minuscule letterforms that evolved from manuscript hands of the eighth and ninth centuries. Majuscule font is the name given to a type of decorative upper-case letters used in inscriptions and, typically, at the start of a section of text in medieval manuscripts. They are characterized by their straight forms unlike rounded in Lombardic capitals with thick, curved stems. Majuscule capitals were also used to write words or entire phrases. The text is divided into words, punctuation marks are used consistently – periods indicate the end of a sentence and the middle of a phrase. Paneuropa 1931™ is a faithful recreation of XX-century Polish classic, made by Idzikowski foundry in Warsaw, 1931. Original Paneuropa was a renowned and highly popular typeface in XX-century Poland, and was widely used in all kinds of design, editorial use and printed materials for decades. Paneuropa is a geometric, clean and versatile font family inspired by Paul Renner's famous Futura - it is a bit narrower, with different proportions and details in drawing, completely different figures and punctuation shapes than Futura. It is an interesting and refreshing alternative to Futura with its own distinct personality and a subtle authentic vintage flavour. Paneuropa 1931 contains separate styles for display and large sizes as well as styles for small text sizes - differing in spacing and the softness of letterforms. The family features an original Paneuropa Double font - a beautiful inline style for headlines and display use. The whole family is completed with added missing inbetween styles as well as italics. Dear Sarah is a type that evokes the emotion of those handwritten messages. Using alternates, ligatures and a complex system for randomization and natural connected characters, Dear Sarah seeks to push the boundaries of digital type. The guiding question that drove the design of Dear Sarah was whether it was possible to create a natural looking script that worked well in running text. Hand-written types often work for two or three words, but as soon you you look at them in a paragraph, their unnatural textures make them feel contrived. As one of the first serious types to explore OpenType for a connected script, Dear Sarah uses a unique system to create natural connections. Often script types rely on one connecting point to make sure that all their characters fit together properly. Characters that naturally connect much higher, such as the ‘o’ or ‘v’ are distorted to connect at the same point as an ‘a’ or a ‘c’. Dear Sarah uses multiple sets of lower-case characters to connect at multiple points, creating a much more natural looking script. OpenType is also used to create variety, by using randomization techniques to insert disconnected characters as well as alternates, ligatures, swashes and ink blots to create a natural rhythm across multiple lines.
