VLNL Boulangerie was originally an incomplete set of early 20th century wood type letters, that Donald Roos found in a dust covered carton box stashed away somewhere at the Royal Academy in The Hague. Charmed by the letter forms Donald decided to print them on paper with a printing press. Next he digitised the prints as they came out, including small imperfections and damages. The missing characters were composed and added digitally to complete the alphabet. (See if you can spot those!?) We think VLNL Boulangerie is a little French in appearance (hence the name), it's joyful, warm, a little crunchy and round-ish. It defenitely has that ‘je-ne-sais-quoi’ that seperates it from most wood type grotesques. It can be perfect for lettering on a storefront window of – let's say a bread shop or a lunchroom. Or a logo for a downtown hipster café. VLNL Boulangerie hardly has any limitations actually.

I have named the font “Makonde” after an tribal group in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique that is well known for their intricate and semi-realistic wood carvings. The patterns that decorate the Makonde font remind me of the Makonde wood carvings. The Makonde font is a useful resource for anyone creating designs or producing text that has African look. Typified by a stark African angularity the characters reflect the ethos of Africa. Each Makonde font contains the full range of upper and lower case characters, all punctuation and special characters as well as the accented characters used in the major European languages. The Makonde tribal group is of historical interest because FRELIMO, the resistance movement which ended Portugese colonialism in East Africa, originated in the homeland of the Makonde. The character shapes in the Makonde font are very similar to those in a style of Umkhonto called Umkhonto Wide. Using Umkhonto together with Makonde gives the designer enormous flexibility.

In older American slang, a "bum steer" is a bad tip, some bad advice or being sent in the wrong direction (to name a few examples). Bum Steer JNL was modeled from some playful hand lettering found on a piece of early 20th Century sheet music entitled "When Uncle Joe Plays a Rag on His Old Banjo". It's very possible that "Hobo" (a popular type design of the time) was a strong influence on the sheet music's style of title lettering. It seems that songwriters in those bygone days were prone to cramming as many words from a line of their song into the title itself. Another such example of a wordy song title which coincidently is in keeping with the theme of a "bum steer" (pun intended) is a novelty number from 1915: "Cows May Come and Cows May Go but the Bull Goes on Forever" (words by Vincent Bryan, music by Harry Von Tilzer). Type designer Hannes von Döhren created Brevia, a soft sans-serif type family consisting of seven weights plus matching italics. Historical typography makes a comeback. A revival of one of the most popular of a number of rugged typefaces used around the turn of the century, Croft revives the creation of Lewis Buddy III, known as "Roycroft" in 1912 ATF catalogs. It also, according to ATF, was designed "partly" by Morris Benton, around 1898. The original typeface might be considered an early form of grunge fonts. This typestyle maintains historical flavor, while also being relevant today. OCR-A was originally designed in 1968 as a machine-readable alphabet. Its functionality was its most important element, instead of its design. Over the following decades, the typeface has become popular in the design world nevertheless. But typographically pleasing results are often hard to come by, due to the original design’s “non-design design”, as well as its undeveloped character set. In 2006, Miriam Röttgers revised and extended OCR-A, creating OCR A Tribute. OCR A Tribute is a typeface family comprising of two versions: one in which the glyphs have been proportionally-spaced, and another that is monospaced. In the monospaced version, all glyphs have the same width, like the letters in the original OCR-A font do. Hipster Script is another of my habitual attempts at trying to reduce the divide between manual and digital. In this case, I try to articulate brush lettering, try to get the computer to emulate continuous painting. The process wasn't that different from my work with Feel Script's shot at computerized commercial lettering, though here we have a more casual contrast, rather than the high seriousness of the Copperplate script. Swashes, alternates, ligatures — too many of them, all trying to make the interplay between the tool’s two extreme widths remain faithful to hand movement subtleties. I also toyed with ligatures containing apostrophes, something I've never seen before. With this typeface I think I've become more balanced in uniting the spontaneity of post-war ad lettering with the current trends in illustration and design. Hipster Script received a Judge’s choice Certificate of Excellence at the Type Directors of New York and was selected to be part of the Bienal Tipos Latinos 2012.

This font was inspired by the Latin script used in European monasteries from circa the 5th to 8th centuries, before the Carolingian “Caroline” (look at our 825 Karolus). It was a regular script, rounded, written slowly, used mainly for specially meticulous books, with a few ligatures, legible, but only with lowercase. The capitals consisted of enlarged lower cases, but here, we have preferred to use two slightly different patterns. Our lower cases are a synthesis from a lot of variants (mainly from the “First Bible” of Charles The Bald), the upper cases were mainly inspired from a 700’s manuscript from the abbey of Fécamp (France). We have adapted the font for contemporary users, differentiating between U and V, I and J, which has no relevance for ancient Latin scribes, and naturally with Thorn, Oslash, Lslash, K, W... punctuation and the usual accented characters which did not exist at the time. It can be used with 799 Insular Title.

The award-winning Scala family (1990-1993) is a worldwide bestseller and has established itself as a ‘classic’ among digital fonts. The Art Nouveau styles of the the turn of the 20th century (1890 - 1905) exhibited a bold approach to organic lines and lavish decoration. This new style was spread throughout the world and helped usher in a new era that led to modern art and design. Art Nouveau SCF is strongly influenced by the style of decoration and typography created by Rennie Mackintosh as well as the Art Nouveau movement in general (with particular reference to Gustave Klimt and Alphonse Mucha). However, it differs from much of the art nouveau typography in that it largely avoids the use of straight lines in its letter forms. It is a decorative, romantic font and its subtly curved bolder lines contrast with delicate tracery to create an intricate pattern of organic flowing shapes. This font was created inspired from the steady hand of a lawyer writing a farm renting contract a few days after the advent of the new French regime. It is a "Pro" font containing Western (including Celtic) and Northern European, Icelandic, Baltic, Eastern, Central European and Turquish diacritics. The numerous alternates and ligatures allow to made the font looking as closely as possible to a real hand. Using an OTF software, the features allow to vary the characters without anything to do but to select contextual alternates and standard ligatures and/or stylistic alternates options.

Woodford Bourne is a brand new 19th century grotesque typeface. The design is a tribute to the historic stone cast type in the building façades of the former Woodford, Bourne & Co. in Cork City, Ireland. For many years I had admired the type’s simplicity and strength, so I decided to faithfully reproduce those letters and expand them to a fully working font with 500 glyphs per case. A key feature of Woodford Bourne is the ability to change the feel of your typography with just one click. Switch from contemporary to vintage style by selecting “Stylistic Set 1” – this gives Woodford Bourne a unique versatility which I am sure you will enjoy playing with in your designs. It is a solid, reliable “workhorse” font family that reproduces well at all sizes… it’s also great for branding and identities. As a practicing graphic designer there have been numerous occasions when I have needed a font that didn’t exist. More often than not the style I was looking for was described as an extra-condensed sans-serif with a contemporary look that was available in a variety of weights. Small caps would be useful, so would a range of numeral styles. And matching italics too, of course. The proportions would consider viewing on hand-held devices, cell phones, remote controllers. And not forgetting that the font would be used in situations which required stacking the lines close. So the overshoots needed to be eliminated – the exaggeration of extremities that are intended to avoid round characters appearing smaller than their more squarish counterparts, often colliding when linespacing is tight. As I refined the design, I tested it on several works-in-progress providing a valuable testing ground and proving popular with my clients.

Halley is a modern, funny and casual script with an irregular base line that gives it a unique and modern look. All the glyphs have been carefully painted giving the texts a wonderful flow.
