CA Saygon was originally conceived for a large corporate design project, but as this was never implemented, the way was free to make a public font. As a striking corporate typeface, it transports the fractions of a society after the post-modernist phase. After hundreds of sketches a bunch full of letters were selected, some of them quite twisted, others rather conventional. The combination of these letters reflects a rebellion of individuality but also leads to a coherent typeface. Dorica is a serif font family optimized for small sizes. It is very sober and simple, with a classic appearance at first sight but the curves and details like the serifs make it very different. The name is inspired by Doric, the simplest of the three orders of organizational systems of ancient Greece. The large x-height makes it perfect for use in magazines and every context which calls for text in small sizes. Dorica comprises 14 styles, from Thin to Black with their corresponding italics. Each font includes small caps, very useful for books, plus OpenType features such as proportional figures, stylistic alternates, tabular figures, numerators, superscript, denominators, scientific inferiors, subscript, ordinals, fractions and many ligatures. BC Away is a display typeface. It has emerged from the idea of drawing letterforms with a single-line path. Thanks to this idea, the characters are designed out of standard and conventional forms. Character designs are a combination of sharp corners and smooth curves, at the same time keeping readability. Some parts have been left blank in accordance with the letter forms. The name 'Away' represents these blanks. Also, the word 'a way' refers to the design of letterforms using a single-way.

Architype Universal is a collection of avant-garde typefaces deriving mainly from the work of artists/designers of the inter-war years, whose ideals underpin the design philosophies of the modernist movement in Europe. Their ‘universal’, ‘single alphabet’ theory limits the character sets. Architype Ballmer is inspired by the experimental, universal letterforms drawn by Bauhaus trained Swiss designer Theo Ballmer for a series of 1928 posters, most notably for an exhibition on industrial standards. The grid-based square forms reference elements of De Stijl.

Nova Caere is a typical urban calligraphy, gestural with its fast lines, with short and slightly noticeable ascender and descender traits. Condensed lower case and rounded capital letters are quite similar in height. Nova Caere has been studied for alternating upper and lower case inside the words of the text, so as to reinforce their expressive content. Stylistic variations that combine particular couples of letters have been developed, as well as some descender traits have been highlighted that can be employed to characterize words and phrases.

A geometric design, published in Rick Poynor’s Typography Now 1 (Booth-Clibborn Editions, London UK,1991). Hildegard is a sans serif text face that works well in both larger and smaller point sizes. A 1918 lettering instruction book by William Hugh Gordon presented a number of lettering styles that were geared toward sign and show card painters along with tips and tricks regarding the correct construction of such signs for maximum effect. One pen lettered Roman alphabet with a beautiful set of numerals has been recreated digitally as Pen Elegant JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. To note, Gordon was the co-inventor of the Speedball lettering pen with Ross F. George in 1915.

Tosca is a very elegant and decorative typeface with 730 glyphs. I put a second set of capital letters in the places of the smallcaps. So just type the word in lowercase, then select the first letter and convert it to smallcap in the OpenType menu. I also give you a ton of ligatures that can be accessed via OpenType. The dearJoe series of fonts had it’s origin somewhere around 1999, the year I created dearJoe 1, which was a first (and half-assed) attempt at converting my own handwriting into a working font. Being able to type in my own handwriting had always been a childhood fantasy, and even though I only partly understood the software, a working font was generated and I decided to put it on the internet for people to use. And that’s what they did: at this moment the dearJoe 1 font has been downloaded millions of times and can be found on just about anything, ranging from Vietnamese riksjas, a Tasmanian gym to a fancy chocolate store on 5th Avenue. The font is not something I am particularly proud of, but it started me of in building what later became the JOEBOB graphics font foundry. Inbetween creating other fonts, the dearJoe series has become a theme I revisit every once in a while, trying to create an update on how my handwriting evolved, along with my abilities in creating fonts that mimic actual handwriting. In the last decade or so I started implementing ligatures and alternate characters, which helped a lot in making something that can almost pass for actual handwriting.

Pata Slab: the ultra-heavy optimism we all need in 2020 Pata Slab is the type equivalent of a catwalk stomp down a city sidewalk, a font that’s assertive, funky and more than a little sexy. Named after a colloquialism for ‘feet’, Pata features ultra-heavy slabs and contrasting hairline centers that rise from its chunky footprint. The resulting, retro-inspired vertiginous curves add instant attitude to any design. Developed in 2020, Pata is a type of its time.Pata is all upside, as it is a typeface with no descenders — one that elevates all characters to grow upward from the baseline (because, c’mon, we could all use something uplifting right now!) All uppercase characters were built to fit precisely inside a square, so they’re all the same width and height. The lowercase alphabet, eñes, cedillas, punctuation, numbers and symbols all follow the same height restrictions. Despite all that confinement, Pata sports standard-height terminals that connect seamlessly so there’s nearly endless options for modular ligatures. The upshot of all this meticulous awesomeness is that laying out, customizing and stacking text super simple.
