Although the early 1900s through the 1920s seemed to be the "Golden Age" of ridiculously long novelty song titles, it appears that even the decade of the 1940s had its fair share as well. Song Merchant JNL was modeled from the hand lettered [but exhausting] title of the sheet music for "Princess Poo-Poo-Ly Has Plenty Pa-Pa-Ya (and she Loves to Give it Away)". Despite the obvious double-entendre inferences of the title, the square block letters with rounded corners make for a useful headline font (even if the source material it was drawn from is quite forgettable). The 1907 novelty song "Since Arrah Wanna Married Barney Carney" (about an Irishman taking an Indian maiden as his bride) had its title hand-lettered in a sans serif style that reflected both the Art Nouveau flavor of the time and a hint of what was to come during the Art Deco movement. This is now Song Stylist JNL and it's oblique counterpart.

Fong Shay Noon JNL is a non-traditional approach to an Oriental-styled font as there are some letter forms with curves and others with straight lines. The name derives from a Chinese restaurant in North Miami Beach, Florida during the 1960s, which in turn took its name from a play on a Yiddish phrase.

The hand lettering of a piece of 1930s sheet music's title has once more yielded an interesting take on the popular "thick and thin" lettering of the Art Deco period.

The Face2Face (F2F) series was inspired by the techno sound of the mid-1990s, personal computers and new font creation software. For years, Thomas Nagel and his friends formed a unique type design collective, which churned out a substantial amount of fresh, new fonts, none of which complied with the traditional rules of typography. Many of these typefaces were used to create layouts for the leading German techno magazine of the 1990s, Frontpage. Nagel and his fellows would even set in type at 6 points, in order to make it nearly unreadable. It was a pleasure for the kids to read and decrypt these messages! Sheet music for the 1939 Hoagy Carmichael composition "Hong Kong Blues" features the Far East-influenced hand lettered title that was the basis for Asian Imports JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions. Carmichael performed the song in the 1944 Warner Brothers film "To Have and Have Not", (which first paired Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall). The sheet music was a reissue to capitalize on the song's use in the film.

A piece of sheet music for the 1920 song "When Chu-Ching-San weds Paddy McCann" had the title hand lettered in an unusually bold form of Asian-inspired lettering. This font was created in honor of my husband for our 12th wedding anniversary. 14 years ago, I met this tall, skinny guy from Indiana in the lobby of a hotel in Hong Kong. We talked. The next day, we had lunch together. And that night we had dinner together. And the next day. And the next. We met just before my 19th birthday, and on my birthday he took me to the top of Victoria Peak, where we looked out over the city of Hong Kong- such a beautiful place to begin a lifetime of love! We spent 4 months together in Hong Kong, falling in love with each other and with the beautiful city we were privileged to call home for that short time. We married the next year. We've lived in Indiana, Texas, China, Kentucky, and Florida over those 12 years of marriage and have welcomed 2 daughters into our lives. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he completes my life in a way I didn't know was possible. The hand lettered sans serif title on the1931 sheet music for “(Potatoes are Cheaper-Tomatoes are Cheaper) Now’s the Time to Fall in Love” presented another opportunity to create a typeface from the wealth of unusual alphabets found on the covers of vintage and antique song sheets. However, it seems that even as late as the 1930s, song writers had the urge to pen long-worded titles for their musical compositions. This thirteen word verbal excursion became the model for Casual Deco JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Pardesi font is named after a song from Raja Hindustani, a 1996 Bollywood movie directed by Dharmesh Darshan. The lead roles were played by Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor. Together they sing: 'Pardesi, pardesi, jaana nahi', meaning so much as: 'Foreigner, foreigner, don't go'. I remember this song very well, as I was backpacking through India and Nepal at the time and it was played over and over again on all long distance buses I took. Pardesi font is a fat, rounded, marker-pen font, ideal for books and posters. It comes with extensive language support.

Songs of the early 1900s were anything but the status quo in topic or style. Excessively long titles, novelty tunes and "foreign themes" permeated the piles of sheet music in the local music shops. 1916's "Oh How She Could Yacki Hacki Wicki Wacki Woo (That's Love in Honolu)" covered a number of these quirks within one publication. This Hawaiian-tinged song evoked the mysterious ways of the South Seas islands, despite the abridging of Honolulu to "Honolu". Nonetheless, the hand lettered title of this particular piece of sheet music featured an Art Nouveau-influenced bold block letter with rounded corners. It's now available digitally as Smooth Sailing JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Answer Songs have been around for [probably] just as long as there have been songs. 1917's "If I Catch the Guy Who Wrote Poor Butterfly" was the answer to the 1916 hit "Poor Butterfly" [by Raymond Hubbell and John Golden], which in turn was inspired by the Puccini opera "Madame Butterfly". "Poor Butterfly" was so popular that this "answer" tune had as part of its lyrics "That melody haunts me in my sleep; it seems to creep." Nonetheless, the sheet music for William Jerome and Arthur Green's comic lament had the title hand lettered with an oval nib lettering pen and is now availably as a digital type face called Dip Pen JNL.
