Kompakt is one of the early typefaces of type designer Hermann Zapf, whose Palatino has long been a standard in almost every area of application. Kompakt consists of a single weight and was designed in 1952, two years after Palatino. It was produced by the foundry D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where Zapf was at the time in the artistic department. The figures of this extremely strong and heavy typeface are decidedly those of a broad tipped pen. When enlarged, the sharp outlines of the characters can be clearly seen. The unique dynamic of the alphabet is a result of its strong serifs, which on the lower case letters almost connect the letters in a line. Together with the slight slant to the right, this gives Kompakt the character of handwriting, making it look like it is always striving to go forward. Kompakt is an excellent choice for advertisements, especially for posters which should display a hint of nostalgia, and should be used only in headlines.

Switched On and Switched Off where two fonts developed by placing points on a pre-defined square grid template. The experiment was to explore all the variations possible by just using straight connecting lines on a grid. I stumbled on the final concept, almost accidentally, and was amazed by the numerous possibilities. Both designs where created to work together. By adjusting the stroke and inline proportions between the two fonts, I was able to achieve a good overall color balance between 'Switched On' (dark letters on a light background), and the 'Switched Off' design as a knockout treatment (light letters on a dark background). Used in this way, both fonts visually appear similar in overall weight and proportion. They harmonize well together. Used separately, they make for some interesting visual effects and headline treatments. The fonts are best used at large point sizes, but they are still legible in a variety of smaller sizes. I think that by experimenting with these two fonts one can achieve some stunning visual effects. Explore and have fun.

An isolated letters typeface design with a comic feel. All letters start with a prominent circular dot. All final shape letters end with a smaller dot, in addition. The Nuqat (Arabic for dots) font family has four members which include two weights, normal and bold, and comes in regular and left-slanted italic styles. This font family design follows the guidelines of Mutamathil Taqlidi type style with one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in the latest Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for the freely-connecting letters in traditional Arabic cursive text. The Nuqat font family employs variable x-height values. Nuqat includes only Lam-Alif ligatures. Soft-vowel diacritic marks, harakat, are selectively positioned. My latest typeface is a formal, copperplate script named Glade. Beginning as a project for a client who wanted several widths of a formal script style, the project never saw fruition. However, it did get me excited about the idea of a width family of steel nib scripts, ranging from extra narrow to extra wide, and the result is the Glade family. To give Glade a minor modern makeover from the original intent, the lowercase has been scaled up, and the Capitals scaled down for a more friendly personality. The character set has been expanded, and OpenType support has been added for unlimited fractions, ordinals, superiors and inferiors. So if you have the need for a formal connecting script, but are short on space, try Glade Narrow or Glade Extra Narrow. If space is not an issue, then the Regular, Wide or the generously gracious Extra Wide should do nicely. And if you get the whole family, well then you are set for anything that comes your way.

Lotter blackletter with Drop caps One fine day I found a vintage book, it called “A treatise by the Dominican friar-writer Marcus von Weida on the Brotherhood of the Holy Rosary”. It was printed in 1515 by Melchior Lotter in Leipzig. The text was illustrated by hand-colored engravings on religious and liturgical themes and beautiful initials I like. Lotter was the last name of a family of German printers, intimately connected with the Reformation. An innovation by the elder Lotter was his use of Roman types for Latin, reserving the Gothic types for German. I'm happy to present to you my new font family. Lotter font family has Drop cap and Regular styles. It's all you need to precisely imitate medieval style text. I generally refer to our typefaces as ‘graphic’ rather than typographic. By that I mean their starting points are usually ways of constructing shapes and systems of shapes. As with other Alias typefaces, Sabre has stone and wood cut letterforms as a starting point. What is interesting about lettercutting is the connection between shape and material. These beautifully crafted letterforms have a particular sharpness which reflects, of course, how they were made. The idea of constructing letters from a kit of parts we first explored in early fonts Elephant and Factory. These are different in that they were very much grid-based, with a geometric structure. For Sabre I also had Fred Smeijers’ stencil construction drawings in mind. These show how a set of components can be the basis for a crafted, elegant typeface. Sabre is quite a loose interpretation of this idea. Sabre’s graphic shape means it works well at large sizes, with a dramatic, angular impact. Its aim is to be typographic enough to function for blocks of small-size text too.

Pendulum is the much-anticipated digitization and swashy expansion of Americana, an amazing yet long overlooked treasure from the Nebiolo foundry, circa 1945. With heavy descenders and seemingly floating ascenders emanating from one of the most classical attempts at connected upright calligraphy, never did a font have this much charm and complexity at once. To complement the beauty of the original letters, Pendulum comes with two additional sets of swashed ending lowercase we call Swings.
