Luxus Brut Sparkling developed from sketches for a bolder version of Luxus Brut that I made for a poster design. Interventions like slightly tightening the (still generous) spacing and amplifying the contrast between thick and thin strokes ended in a complete rework of the original font. The family consists of four typefaces- regular, weathered, shaded and shadowed, and has it's origin in a design challenge which came up in conversation, as all the best ones do. In this case it was 'design a legible all capitals black letter...' Challenge accepted and completed!

Here’s a new take on the hand-lettered alphabet Oswald Bruce Cooper used in ads for the Packard Motor Company, later converted into a metal typeface by the Barnhard Brothers & Spindler foundry. Hancock Bold Condensed is slab serif typeface. The original Hancock design was produced by the Keystone Type Foundry, circa 1903; a condensed version was added circa 1917 by Lanston Monotype. Steve Jackaman (ITF) designed and produced a digital version of Hancock in 1994, and completely redrew the typeface for its 2017 release. The new version has a 40% larger glyph set, and supports Latin 1 plus Central/Eastern European languages.

This quirky poster face was offered in one of his many Idea Books, and it remains as fresh and frolicsome today, some seventy years later, as when it first appeared. The typeface which inspired this offering was originally called "Chaucer", not because it is typical of lettering of Chaucer’s time (which it is not) but, more likely, because it’s pretty funny, even if the humor is low. Another purveyor of low humor, Mack Sennett and his Keystone Kops, suggested this version’s name. Schmallfette Binder-Style, designed by Joseph Binder and released by D. Stempel AG in 1959 provided the template for this upright, set-tight display face. Its rather unconventional placement of the crossbars on the f and t is a subtle attention-grabber, and true to Binder's original design. An entry in the Palmer and Rey 1884 specimen book named, somewhat prosaically, Geometric Gothic provided the inspiration for this rectilinear romp through the alphabet. As apt as it is for a period piece of its time, it's also oddly and equally comfortable in a retro space-age environment. Hem and Haw SRF is another Ray Larabie original for Stella Roberts Fonts. Rebuilt from Ray's former freeware design "Stitchen", the lettering looks as if it were stitched into fabric. The font Simeon is based on a historic Armenian handwriting notrgir that was made popular in 1756-1757’s by Johann Michael Fleischman who used it for Johann Enschede’s typefoundry and Armenian handwritten capital letters from other European sources edited by a modern Armenian designer. It also contains style and time appropriate Bastardo-Latin and a stylized Cyrillic, complete with full set of Armenian characters and ligatures, required Latin ligatures.
