We use an old hand juicer at home: a cheap plastic one that we bought a long time ago at a Swedish home appliances and furniture giant. We haven never considered upgrading to an electronic one, as it still works, it doesn’t use electricity and we don’t really use it that often. This font is called Juicer. It was not named after our manual juicer, or any juicer in particular. It was just a word that seemed to fit the font nicely. Juicer font is a handwritten, script-ish kinda font that comes in two great styles and contains a set of double letter ligatures.

Impara was designed in 2010. It is a slightly contrasted sans serif with a lively stroke ductus and distinct humanistic characteristics. It represents a synthesis of linear coolness and classic elegance. It qualifies for informational text applications and, in display sizes, it reveals elaborate details. Impara comes in 10 styles in OpenType and TrueType format. I read something interesting the other day: in 1910 a cat called Kiddo snuck on board an airship and was found by aeronaut Walter Wellman - after he had already taken off in an attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Wellman and Kiddo spent 71 hours aboard the airship, but never completed the journey, due to engine problems and foul weather. Luckily, they were both rescued. It was a funny story, so I decided to name a font after it. Reluctant Aviator is a handmade font (pen and paper). It has a rough edge, some shaky glyphs and a lot of bravado. Comes with diacritics and swashes.

Carefree makes it so simple to elevate a logo or headline text, whether you're wanting something bold or delicate. Mesa is a revival of an old pointed Tuscan font from the MacKellar Smiths and Jordan type foundry called Broad Gauge circa 1874. This new version offers a few alternates including half slab and full slab uppercase A's. Opentype case sensitive forms are also included in the Mesa font family. We started production on this font in 2009 but set it aside to work on other projects, we're pleased to have finally finished it. There's a little restaurant in an old house on a sidestreet in town (Rockland, Maine, USA) called Cafe Miranda. The staff is friendly, the setting intimate, and the appetizer a basket of hot bread fresh from a brick oven. Its ample menu features such entries as "Quasi-Cassoulet" and "Gentle Sole." It's among my favorite local places to dine out. But the menu got photocopied once too often, and Cindy's personable handlettering got faded and broken. So I took matters into my own hands. And here's what I delivered to the newly computerized folks at the little restaurant on Oak Street. You, too, can travel in rather heavy felt-tip style.

P22 Victorian is a font set created in conjunction with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery's exhibition of Victorian-era French artist James Tissot. The fonts developed for the P22 Victorian set are based on historic typefaces dating from the late 19th century. Victorian Gothic was based on a type style called ‘Atlanta’, a simple, expanded width, quirky, yet elegant face similar to ‘Copperplate’. Victorian Swash was inspired by the willowy, delicate face ‘Columbian’, which has also been known in recent years as ‘Glorietta’. The P22 version includes ‘snap-on’ flourishes based on the original 'Columbian' ornamental embellishment designs. Victorian Ornaments features over 150 decorative embellishments.

Frank-Rühl (or Ruehl) is the ubiquitous Hebrew text font style. There are many fonts that belong to this style, and all are based on an early 20th-century design by Raphael Frank. Some of the fonts are actually called Frank-Rühl (or Ruehl) and some are not. It was originally designed in a single weight. Bitstream developed Frank Ruehl for the Microsoft Windows operating system. The font is encoded with a Microsoft defined Hebrew character set, Hebrew Code Page 1255. Within the TrueType fonts, the characters are assigned Unicode character IDs. The font includes Hebrew characters, and Latin glyphs from Dutch 801 bold.

The idea behind the font called Chaco originated after testing the deficiency shown in road signs in Latin America. The design began after a long documenting period. Throughout the various stages of the work,  there were several  tests and checks  conducted of the formal solutions implemented which, based on the results, would gradually be changed until we finally reached, in this way, its definite design. The original project for the font features three steps, namely: regular, light and bold, yet by making progress in the development, it was possible for us to perceive that by enlarging the black and thin variances, the family with 5 different weights could offer very good results in mass media, such as newspapers, magazines and television. In order to expand its possibilities of utilization, the set was completed with italics and small capitals.

Stretto (Italian for narrow) is a revival, correction and expansive update of an Aldo Novarese reverse-stress font called Sintex, which he did for VGC in 1973. Openly idiosyncratic and playfully rebellious in its design, this alphabet fuses the straights and rounds in an unusual manner, riffing on the idea of hand-made sign and wood type forms while adhering to its odd grid’s parameters. In spite of its counter-stress, its legibility is high and even, helped by its unicase forms and very distinct counters. First released in 2007, it became quite popular with film studios and nostalgia designers (Sintex was the font used for David Bowie’s Hunky Dory album and Life on Mars? single). A dozen years later we revisited it for an update. Stretto now comes with over 660 characters and includes Pan European language support.

Back in 2017, I was working on a cutout font that I originally wanted to call Scissor Madness. In the end, I named it Cut Along and it was quite a popular font for a while. This week I decided to clean up my fonts folder a bit (as I usually have tons of unfinished fonts lurking in there) and I found a file named Scissor Madness. It was the original try-out for Cut Along. It contained a couple of nice glyphs that I never used, so I started playing around with them and after a day, I had a whole new font! So, in short, Scissor Madness was partly cut out by hand, partly computer made, but it is 100% fun to use! Scissor Madness comes with a bunch of very cute discretionary ligatures.

Sonovovitch is a unicase display typeface inspired by the Russian Constructivist movement and Soviet Cold War era propaganda. Although a faux Russian font, Sonovovitch has language support for the true Cyrillic alphabet. Originally intended as an exercise in downsizing the typical font’s character set, Sonovovitch quickly expanded in the opposite direction, adding multiple variations for letterforms and utilizing Open Type features allowing for easy substitution of glyphs… creating plenty of variety for letter combinations. Open Type “Titling Alternates” even substitute completely foreign glyphs, never seen before in any language, allowing for totally alien typesetting. The results found in Sonovovitch are packed with bold character and eastern European influenced flair. Sonovovitch’s eclectic geometric forms lend itself to a multitude of graphic applications; from serious branding programmes, to light-hearted packaging, to sports jerseys, to hand-crafted DIY projects.

Tomato is the digitization and quite elaborate expansion of an early 1970s Franklin Photolettering film type called Viola Flare. This typeface is an obvious child of funk, the audio-visual revolution that swept America and put an end to the art nouveau period we now associate with the hippy era. Funk is of course little more than jazz with a chorus and an emphatic beat. Nevertheless, it became the definition of cool in the 1970s, thanks to blaxploitation movies with excellent soundtracks like Shaft and Superfly. Funk began as a commercial audio experience, then later expanded its signature to cover everything, from design to fashion to the later birth of disco, which is really a further simplification of funk. Funk had very strong and unique typographical elements, particularly a kind of titling with an essentially western, wooden core that suddenly changed and flared in unexpected areas until a very individual brand was achieved. Everything that can be tacked on to the alphabet was used towards that individuality. Things like curls, swirls, swashes, ligatures were always plentiful in funk, sometimes giving the titling a specific gender, sometimes bulging, sometimes speeding, sometimes fading in the distance, sometimes doing nothing but crazily aligning with other design elements, but the result was always a fascinating creature that seemed to invariably want to dance and have fun. Tomato was built in exactly that spirit. The original film type certainly had enough swashes and curls to be an unmistakable funk font in itself, but our further expansion of it cements it and makes it the definite font for the genre. With as many as 12 different possibilities for some letters, the designer's choices for a titling set in Tomato are virtually limitless. The Postscript and True Type versions of Tomato come in five fonts, including two fonts for alternates, one font for ligatures, and one font for swashes. These are split into two affordable packages. The entire family package is also available at an even more affordable price, and includes complimentary Cyrillic, Greek, Turkish, and Central European versions of Tomato. A Tomato Pro OpenType version is also available. Capitolium was designed in 1998 at the request of the Agenzia romana per la preparatione del Giubileo for the Jubilee of the Roman Catholic Church in 2000. This type design was the central part of the project for a wayfinding and information system to guide pilgrims and tourists through Rome. Capitolium also continues Rome’s almost uninterrupted two-thousand-year-old tradition of public lettering . It is a modern typeface for the twenty-first century and strongly related to the traditions of Rome. Soon after the completion of this project Unger began contemplating the possibility of bringing the atmosphere of this design to newspapers. Though Capitolium works well in most modern production processes and also on screens, it is too fragile for newsprint. For newspapers sturdier shapes were required as well as more characters to a line of text, and Capitolium News has a bigger x-height than Capitolium. Capitolium News is a thoroughly modern newsface, with classic letterforms linked to a strong tradition. Capitolium News for running text comes in the variations regular, italic, semibold, semibold italic, bold and bold italic. As is possible with most of Unger’s type designs, Capitolium News can be condensed and expanded without any harm to the letterforms. The update to this beautiful font family, Capitolium News, includes the addition of over 250 glyphs featuring full Latin A language support, new ligatures, 4 sets of numerals, arbitrary fractions and superiors/inferiors. Furthermore, kerning was added and fine tuned for better performance.

Milton Glaser commented about this type family: “The typeface is called Houdini after the famous American magician. I wanted to produce a letterform that would gradually disappear as one line after another was removed.” The various versions of Houdini presented by P22 include those originally offered as phototypesetting fonts, plus a solid and an outline version—a variation of which was used for Sesame Place children’s park in 1980. These Houdini variations can all be layered on top of each other for a range of chromatic effects. Each of the Houdini fonts contains over 375 characters for full European language coverage. The family is taken to its logical conclusion with the bonus font “P22 Glaser Houdini Vanished.” This font shares the same spacing and kerning as all of the Houdini font but lacks all visible outlines. Over the years there have been many typefaces that borrowed heavily from the Glaser designs, but these are the only official fonts approved by Milton Glaser Studio and the Estate of Milton Glaser.

There is no doubt that the 1941 version of “The Maltese Falcon” was superior to the prior two attempts by Warner Brothers at filming Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel. Sam Spade was perfectly portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, and the supporting cast of Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Elisha Cook, Jr. rounded out the main players in a great suspense film that is considered to be the first (if not one of the first) of the film noir genre. The title cards for the production and cast credits were hand-lettered in a spurred serif type style strongly reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period, so instead of naming the digital version with some “tough guy detective” moniker, it was decided that Detective Client JNL was more appropriate. After all, this is a reasonably attractive font, and in this kind of film it’s usually the “attractive damsel in distress” [be she the victim or the actual perpetrator] that gets the story rolling… Detective Client JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Padraig Nua is a font conceptualized and designed by Tony Fahy. It is a European Celtic font, contemporary to many languages, not just of Europe but of the world. It’s origin is influenced by events in Ireland in the 1960s when it was decided that the uncial letterform should not be used further in Irish schools for the Irish language—Gaelic—and that it should be replaced by the Roman letterform—the Cló Romhanach as it was called afterwards. This happened overnight without any apparent discussion. It probably had a lot to do with Ireland joining the EEC, as the EU was called then. It had a massive effect on the Irish language and culture, in that the distinguishing factor that gave the language it’s identity—the half uncial/uncial fonts that were in use in all school, government and society documentation and merchandise—were lost overnight. No one said how or why. It was just done. To this day, all documentation is bi-lingual in government and Gaelic is taught in schools and universities—and decreed so by the European Union—but the presentation for both languages is the Roman letterform. Throughout the world, there are millions of Irish Americans and Irish Canadians, Irish Europeans, Australian Irish, African Irish and many living in the Middle East and Asia—and this new font—Padraig Nua, will appeal to many of them, visually recalling their roots. No one had thought, in those days, of commissioning a design that might update the Gaelic language to a more contemporary appearance that would keep the cultural nature of it intact with a revised and updated font—at one with Europe, the US and the world. Tony Fahy designed Padraig Nua (New Patrick) to address the problem. It keeps an appearance that lends towards the Gaelic language but steers it in the direction of Roman fonts. Some characters reflect letterforms from the Irish/Gaelic manuscripts and uncial fonts.
