In 1458, Charles VII sent the Frenchman Nicolas Jenson to learn the craft of movable type in Mainz, the city where Gutenberg was working. Jenson was supposed to return to France with his newly learned skills, but instead he traveled to Italy, as did other itinerant printers of the time. From 1468 on, he was in Venice, where he flourished as a punchcutter, printer and publisher. He was probably the first non-German printer of movable type, and he produced about 150 editions. Though his punches have vanished, his books have not, and those produced from about 1470 until his death in 1480 have served as a source of inspiration for type designers over centuries. His Roman type is often called the first true Roman." Notable in almost all Jensonian Romans is the angled crossbar on the lowercase e, which is known as the "Venetian Oldstyle e." In the 1990s, Robert Slimbach designed his contemporary interpretation, Adobe Jenson™. It was first released by Adobe in 1996, and re-released in 2000 as a full-featured OpenType font with extended language support and many typographic refinements. A remarkable tour de force, Adobe Jenson provides flexibility for a complete range of text and display composition; it has huge character sets in specially designed optical sizes for captions, text, subheads, and display. The weight range includes light, regular, semibold, and bold. Jenson did not design an italic type to accompany his roman, so Slimbach used the italic types cut by Ludovico degli Arrighi in 1524-27 as his models for the italics in Adobe Jenson. Use this family for book and magazine composition, or for display work when the design calls for a sense of graciousness and dignity.

There is no doubt that the 1941 version of “The Maltese Falcon” was superior to the prior two attempts by Warner Brothers at filming Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel. Sam Spade was perfectly portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, and the supporting cast of Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Elisha Cook, Jr. rounded out the main players in a great suspense film that is considered to be the first (if not one of the first) of the film noir genre. The title cards for the production and cast credits were hand-lettered in a spurred serif type style strongly reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period, so instead of naming the digital version with some “tough guy detective” moniker, it was decided that Detective Client JNL was more appropriate. After all, this is a reasonably attractive font, and in this kind of film it’s usually the “attractive damsel in distress” [be she the victim or the actual perpetrator] that gets the story rolling… Detective Client JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

In 2009, a book from 1897 in the library of the University of Wisconsin caught David Berlow’s attention. It was set in a clear text face—a predecessor of Bookman—cast by the Western Type Foundry who called it Custer. Upon noting how well the typeface worked in sizes of 6 and 7 points, Berlow developed it into a member of the Reading Edge series specifically designed for small text on screen. Custer RE was a broad and approachable typeface drawn large on the body with a tall x-height to maximize its apparent size when set very small. This was the beginning of the newly expanded series; in 2020, Berlow added new optical sizes and weights, growing the original design’s versatility up to headline sizes.

This Art Nouveau typeface was created around the turn of the 20th century by the Bauer Type Foundry in Germany. A unique foot and head serif treatment is the key design feature in this antique revival. Many vertical stems terminate in what has been called “the swooping, pointy-foot look.” A marvel to look at and a joy to set, Gable Antique Condensed will be a lasting asset to your growing typeface collection. Gable Antique Condensed is also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. Advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress 7. Mouser has been an ongoing project that originated as a geometric sans of the same name before morphing into a similar, but entirely different family called TypoGraphica. It retains much of its earlier character such as limited contrast, high legibility, and tight spacing. Major changes were made for a simplistic, more cohesive look. This was done to maximize its usefulness for body text while keeping characteristics used for display purposes. Slices to top strokes are much more subtle with styling dialed down to a minimum. This family comes in 6 different versions to meet a variety of needs. Mouser is equipped with Basic and Extended Latin/diacritics, Cyrillic, kerning, ligatures, and fractions. One look at the font Wanted brings to mind swinging saloon doors, double shots of whiskey and sheriff's badges. It belongs to the so-called Italienne typefaces which began to appear at the beginning of the 19th century. The distinguishing characteristic of such typefaces is the robustness of its serifs, which exceeds that of the base strokes. Wanted looks almost as though it were stamped on paper. Small white flecks appear in some of the strongest black strokes just as they would in a stamp which did not get quite enough ink...or are they perhaps the work of a sharp shooter? Wanted is best for short headlines and perfect for anything which should have the look and feel of the Wild West.

Niccolo Niccoli (1364-1437) was a wealthy bibliophile and an acclaimed scribe, in Florence (Italy). He was one of the most important Italian calligrapher in this early time of rediscovering Roman script. Of rare accomplishment was his adaptation of the so called Italian humanistic minuscule script. We were inspired from his late work to create this present Font. We have added a lot of accented and other characters (U/V, I/J...) who was not existing in the original and replacing "long s" by a small "s" for a modern use. The OTF encoding was used for intelligent alternates, permitting to use different forms of the same lower case or capital in a single word, reproducing easily the charming variety of a real manual scripture.

Think of Garamouche as Garamond's drunken cousin. This font replicates a long lost document ravaged by time and the elements (with a little sloppy printing for good measure.) Unlike the fake bolding option found in software programs, Garamouche Bold is a variant with more appropriate thick and thin features. The "dancing along the baseline" that has made Garamouche a favorite, is also a feature in Garamouche Bold, but the letters align and tilt in on their own terms. Thursday Afternoon is like a typewriter that was out in the rain all night - all wobbly and worn, but with the well-known details of a typewriter, just a bit...well a lot...out of the ordinary! Although being awkward, Thursday Afternoon is surprisingly legible. I'd like that the font should be used for labels, toys for kids, candy or any kind of organic product. It even looks really well with headlines or shoutouts in all-caps!

Nantua is inspired by the Russian Constructivism from the early 1920s. Artists like Aleksandr Rodchenko used typography as forms. Nantua can be used with that very same principal. It's a very geometrical display font with hard edges. Used in big sizes it is very 'in your face'. Used in small sizes it tends to work like a compact background pattern. With very small inner forms, Nantua needs to be used in big sizes to be legible. It's preferably seen on posters or flyers.

Multilingual, semi-connected​ display brush script, Nagamaki is perfect for logos, food packaging, menus, labels, apparel, advertising, cards, branding and more. Nagamaki comes with a set of lowercase swash alternates, ligatures and ending terminals. Inspired by my writing created with Pentel Touch Brush Pen and polished into clean forms, it’s stroke endings on letters like l or t reminded me of Japanese Katana swords. After researching the swords I named the font Nagamaki, which is a type of Katana sword with an extra long handle. It works well in smaller sizes and for more text but it shines in medium to large point sizes. You can access all the OpenType features through Adobe, Affinity and other similar software. With a couple of defining features like double story lowercase g and alternate lowercase r it makes a perfect choice for giving a little character to your designs while keeping everything nice and neat.

Sahan is a typeface which looks almost like Arabic, but it is not a real Arabic font. This simulation font includes upper and lower case Latin alphabets and numerals. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European character sets, as well as Baltic and Turkish languages.
