In the collection of vintage and historic images available online from the Library of Congress is one of the exterior of the Town Talk Diner in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Regrettably, on May 28, 2020, the Town Talk Diner was damaged by vandalism, and subsequently destroyed by a fire that engulfed the building early on the morning of May 29th due to civil unrest following the death of George Floyd. The restaurant first opened in 1946, closed in 2011 and subsequently re-opened under new ownership in 2014 with French cuisine, then from 2016 until its demise as an American bistro. While this was not known at the time of selecting the image for a typographic model, subsequent research on the diner turned up these facts. The large vintage sign above the entrance was in big, bold Art Deco letters with rows and rows of bulbs for illuminating the name at night. Coffee and Danish JNL, modeled from the image of that sign, is available in both regular and oblique versions. Perhaps, in a way, the type design will serve as a bit of historic recognition for a popular eating spot.

Coverack was inspired by some hand lettering spotted by Dave Nalle on a pub menu blackboard during a recent trip to England. It's in the tradition of Celtic uncial lettering, but is extra bold and has some fantastical embellishments. The name comes from a lovely little town on the Cornish coast where the designer stayed during the trip.

Cuadrifonte was freely inspired by the lettering from a 1917 poster – the only recorded poster designed by the architect and furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld. In the December, 1947 issue of Modern Screen magazine, a feature article showcased actress Deborah Kerr with the title “Imported”. The typography used for the headline of the article was a hand lettered, extra-bold, sans serif stencil design. With chunky, confident letters, Madsen is rough and ready, but with an element of pizzazz. This script was drawn with a wet brush pen and rough paper to create coarse edges and an uneven baseline that showcase its handwritten, charismatic aesthetic. Madsen is a bold script, that has some contrast and a lot of natural charm.

Macro Print is a display font available in a regular and a bold version. But it does not stop there. To create a unique, hand-printed feeling there are two sets within each version, therefore using the same letter twice in a headline will make the font look original and authentic. Yep, it is hand-drawn.

Claude Sans is the work of British designer Alan Meeks. The conservative roman weight is complemented by a more extravagant italic. The proportions are based on those of the original Garamond typeface of Claude Garamond, from whom this type gets its name. Claude Sans can be used alone or combined with Claude Sans italic and bold weights.

After seeing them, I could not resist the temptation to do a complete set of letters made from push pins or tacks, a truly tacky font.
