OCR A and OCR B are standardized, monospaced fonts designed for Optical Character Recognition" on electronic devices. OCR A was developed to meet the standards set by the American National Standards Institute in 1966 for the processing of documents by banks, credit card companies and similar businesses. This font was intended to be "read" by scanning devices, and not necessarily by humans. However, because of its "techno" look, it has been re-discovered for advertising and display graphics. OCR B was designed in 1968 by Adrian Frutiger to meet the standards of the European Computer Manufacturer's Association. It was intended for use on products that were to be scanned by electronic devices as well as read by humans. OCR B was made a world standard in 1973, and is more legible to human eyes than most other OCR fonts. Though less appealingly geeky than OCR A, the OCR B version also has a distinctive technical appearance that makes it a hit with graphic designers.

First conceived as the upper-and lowercase “e” for the logotype of independent publishers Elemental Editions, the letterforms were so well received that they were extended to an entire typeface and formed the basis for a bespoke font – Eef. The type design draws inspiration from the basic elements, the periodic table, functionalist vintage lettering and influences from other classic geometric typefaces with condensed cuts such as Futura and Trade Gothic. The extended set is now developed into a family consisting of three weights – Regular, Medium and Bold. I built the Orchid Key font family from the ground up with the idea that there would be several different styles; the Inline Spurs style was the first to be built, which let me then subtract the spurs, inline slices, or both to make the other styles. For 138 years, the Milton Bradley Company (of Springfield, Massachusetts) has been the leading producer of board games, toys and educational/instructional materials. The company was acquired by Hasbro in 1984. It was merged with the also-acquired Parker Brothers in 1991 and became Hasbro Games until both brand ID's were dropped in 2009. “The Moving Picture Game” was a 1920s-era board game created by Howard R. Garis (credited as ‘the author of the Uncle Wiggily game’) and capitalized on the still-new motion picture industry. On top of the storage box is the game’s name – hand lettered in a free-flowing Art Nouveau sans serif that more closely resembles the titles found within animated cartoons or in the ‘bubble letters’ a school child doodles on notebook paper. Recreated as a digital typeface, Pratfall JNL (named after the slips, trips and falls taken by silent era film comedians) is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The inspiration source for Monarchy Initials is the 1934 Book of American Types by American Type Founders. In that specimen book, they had created a sophisticated two color initial design they called "Stationers Initials" which was only available in metal type at 24, 36, and 48 points. This wonderfully detailed initial style is now digitally recreated and revived for modern use. Monarchy Initials is only capable of initial or single letter monograms due to its unique design. The two color aspect of the original design has been preserved and made accessible within all programs. The Capital character slots contain the background color glyphs, and the lowercase slots hold the outline art for the letters. Tom Lincoln's award-winning type design work since the 1960s has been one way or another of expressing his fascination for the Roman majuscules inscribed at the base of the Trajan Column in Rome. This time he has really outdone himself by bringing us Roma, a definitive, contemporary, mature sans serif expression of those majuscules. With Roma, Lincoln is not satisfied with simply creating a proper "Trajan Sans". He goes on to make it a family of four weights, with built-in small caps and oldstyle figures, then he really goes to town with the options he makes available for shading and multi-color settings. Precise renderings of the Roma capitals are provided in different fonts that can function individually or be layered atop each other for two- or three-color treatments. Behrens Initialen is based on the type graphics of the German architect and type designer Peter Behrens (1868-1940). The Adinkra alphabet is a way to write some of the languages spoken in Ghana and Ivory Coast, such as Akan, Dagbani, Ewe and Ga. It is a simplified version of the Adinkra symbols, and was introduced in 2015 by Charles M. Korankye, who has written a number of books about it. According to tradition, the Adinkra symbols were created by Nana Kwadwo Agyemang Adinkra, the King Gyaman people in the Ashanti region of Ghana from 1810 to 1820. Or they were created by Gyaman people, and the king liked them so much that he wore them on his clothes and named that after himself. The Adinkra symbols are used as decoration, logos, arts, sculpture, pottery and so on. The symbols represent sayings, proverbs or concepts, such as wisdom, authority, strength, unity, love adaptability, wealth, peace, war or agreement. Hejira means “rupture” and this concept was the primary principle that guided the creation of this typeface: to escape conventions and take up the challenge of designing letters with an unusual and fresh approach. Unlike traditional typefaces, each member of this somewhat atypical family has its own distinct personality and formal features. A thin, spiky font that looks like its sharp serifs could pierce through. A more experimental sibling, based on the same skeleton but taken to the extreme, that is best suited to setting big titles. An odd-one-out, sans-serif style whose shapes mimic those generated by the movement of a calligraphic pen. And a quirky fat-face with a flair for combining round curves with pointy elements. Regardless of how different they may be, all four styles feel part of the same system and can be used alongside each other seamlessly. The Hejira set includes multiple ligatures and supports a wide variety of Latin alphabet-based languages.

The Charles Bluemlein Script Collection is an intriguing reminder of the heady days of hand lettering and calligraphy in the United States. From the early 1930s through World War II, there were about 200 professional hand letterers working in New York City alone. This occupation saw its demise with the advent of photo lettering, and after digital typography, became virtually extinct. The odd way in which the Bluemlein scripts were assembled and created - by collecting different signatures and then building complete alphabets from them - is a fascinating calligraphic adventure. Because the set of constructed designs looked nothing like the original signatures, fictitious names were assigned to the new script typefaces. The typeface styles were then showcased in Higgins Ink catalogs. Alejandro Paul and Sudtipos bring the Bluemlein scripts back to life in a set of expanded digital versions, reflecting the demands of today’s designer. Extreme care has been taken to render the original scripts authentically, keeping the fictitious names originally assigned to them by Bluemlein.
