Martin Wilke’s underrated yet influential deco classic from 1932 has both feet firmly planted in the high traditions of Western European calligraphy while carefully and subtly introducing some traits from the sweeping geometric/minimalist vision of the time. In a way, it was one of the representatives of the European anti-type typefaces of that era, when print media was searching for the elusive aesthetic balance between humanism and geometry. This typeface enjoyed some popularity in Germany for a few years, and went on to influence further type designs in Holland and Italy. After the second World War, the black hole that swallowed a big chunk of Europe’s print culture, new influences and technologies overtook the scene, and selective historical emphasis ensued, highlighting some of the era’s designs and overlooking others. Further selective picking in the digital era all but buried Wilke’s body of work - unfairly so, because he was just as important in German type history as Bernhard, Post, Schneidler, Tiemann and Trump. The original metal Wilke Kursiv came in one weight. This digital version goes a long way in expanding on that original offering. Many street nameplates in Britain use versions of Kindersley serif capitals designed by David Kindersley in the 1950s. K-Type Kindersley Sans is an unfussy alternative to the signage stalwart, perfectly suited to newer environments and more contemporary tastes. A tessellation is a shape that can be used to completely fill the plane. Simple examples are isosceles triangles, squares, and hexagons. Tessellation patterns are eye-catching and visually appealing, which is the reason that they have long been popular in a variety of decorative situations. These Tessie fonts have two family members, a solid style that must have different colors when used and an outline style. They can be used separately or they can be used in layers with the outline style on top of the solid style. For rows to align properly, leading must be the same as point size. To see how patterns can be constructed, see the “Samples” file here. Shapes that tessellate and also resemble real-world objects are often called Escher-like tessellations. This typeface contains Escher-like tessellations of birds. Quite a few of them resemble swimming birds, but there are also some that resemble flying birds or birds in other positions. Most or all of these shapes were discovered/created by the font designer during the past twenty years in the process of designing maze books, coloring books, and a book about tessellations. (Earlier tessellation fonts from IngrimayneType, the TessieDingies fonts, lack a black or filled version so cannot do colored patterns. Quorthon is a collection of blackletter style fonts in 3 distinct voices – Black, Dark, and Grey. A storm has been brewing. It’s Hurricane. A complete redesign of a popular style. New flair and excitement abounds with this fast moving spirited brush script. This updated version of Hurricane was created with high end advertising in mind but can also be used for designs outside of commercial uses— greeting cards and social expression, or even scrap-booking projects. There are three regular styles and a PRO version of the script styles, plus a graphics font to add an extra breeze to your work. Hurricane Regular is straight forward with the more Roman capital forms. The Script version swaps the caps out for the more flourished uppercase. And finally, the Swash version contains many of the alternate letter forms found in the PRO version. One of the earliest fonts published by Canada Type was Tiger Script, Phil Rutter's digitization of Jaguar, Georg Trump's 1967 wild calligraphic brush face. In 2010, when the font was revisited for an update, it was shown that it too light for applications under 24 pt, and too irregular for applications over 64 pt. So the face was redigitized from scratch. This new digitization brings a more seamless contour and a much steadier stroke, and much better outlines for use at both extremes of scaling. Language support was also greatly expanded, and many alternates and ligatures were added to the redigitized character set. The name was also changed to Trump Script, to better reflect the origins of the design. Trump Script is a master calligrapher's hand producing very uncommon jolts and bursts of sharpness. It showcases some of the most suprising letter forms ever drawn, like the very unique treatments of B, K, W, Y and Z. In the lowercase one can see the cattiest g ever made, and some of the wildest shapes in the f, j, p, y and z. Trump Script comes in all popular formats. The TrueType and PostScript packages are comprised of two fonts. The OpenType version, Trump Script Pro, combines both fonts into one, and includes features for intelligent substitution in software that supports advanced typography. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European character sets, as well as Baltic, Esperanto, Maltese, Turkish, and Celtic/Welsh languages.

The most exciting new feature of DynaGotesk is the Vintage Italics stylistic set, which activates the decorative forms. It includes the looped "w", curved ascenders and descenders of many lowercase letters. These can significantly change the feel of a poster or invitation. DynaGrotesk may look like a revival of an old typeface, but it is not. It uses only some historical reminiscences, sharp edges and curved shapes, but it’s completely original design aimed at ease of use. The bigger the size, the more evident and pronounced are the spicy details. In smaller and even smallest sizes it’s appearance is qieter, very well suited even for long portions of text. DynaGrotesk was created in 1995 with the use of Multiple Master interpolation. But the MM fonts never achieved the desired application in industry, so designers returned back to single fonts. Over the following decades, the font was modified several times as an old house, and the present re-animation includes the Variable font format. Since its first release in the mid-nineties, it is widely used in all areas of graphic industry from small publishing to international corporate identity. The warm character of DynaGrotesk derives from early sans-serif typefaces, those which appeared before Helvetica. Breathe Neue is not just an update of my renowned Breathe of 2010, this is something else... Many times I find myself looking for inspiration in my previous creations. The original Breathe has something on its essence: Something that almost 10 years later still caught my attention. Like its name suggests, letters seem to be breathing, moving, alive. Many years passed so I asked myself if there was still something I could do for it, something to get the most of that beautiful essence... Suddenly, I was already working on its curves: Many new loops, more polished, more refined. Also the proportion and spacing were altered to embellish the font. Breathe Neue’s swashes are addictive. I couldn't find another word. Irresistible? Maybe. Once you see some of its loops you want to see more. I believe this might be due to its very geometrical feel, which match well with the bodonian curves of the font. See also how well it works with Breathe Caps. I'm still young (yeah, sure) and I believe there're still many years ahead to enjoy this great profession, and to make many new (and astonishing, I hope) fonts. Produced from hand and sumi brush of Neil Summerour, Cherry Blossoms is a natural brush textured font family. Hassan is a traditional-style Arabic text face designed by Hassan Sobhi Mourad, an experienced calligrapher and teacher of the art and first produced by the Linotype Design Studio (U.K.) as a PostScript font in 1993. An individual Naskh style, Hassan cleverly combines elegant proportions, echoing an inscriptional Thuluth in its tall vertical stems and deeply rounded final jim and ain. The effect of verticality is enhanced by the tense, reined-in kerning strokes of ra and waw, the well-poised lam-alif, and the compactly drawn ligatures. The broad-band strokes of Hassan Bold smooth some of the angularity and relax the tension apparent in the Light. The traditional-style ligatures are rendered with an easy flow. Because of the economical character count, Hassan Light and Bold text may be headed by the compact titling styles (Hisham, Mariam) as well as designs like Ahmed or Kufi which answer to the inscriptional qualities of Hassan. In addition to other uses, Hassan would be particularly suited to document text-setting. Hassan’s two OpenType weights include Latin glyphs from Janson Text Roman, and Janson Text Bold, respectively, inside the font files, allowing a single font to set text in both most Western European and Arabic languages. The OpenType glyph ranges incorporate Basic Latin and the Arabic character set, which supports Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. The fonts include tabular and proportional Arabic, Persian, and Urdu numerals, as well as a set of tabular European (Latin) numerals.

Ghost Sign JNL is a spurred serif type design based on the faded lettering of an antique brick wall sign for Homer Hardware [located in Homer, NY] and is available in both regular and oblique versions. From Wikipedia: “A ghost sign is an old hand-painted advertising sign that has been preserved on a building for an extended period of time. The sign may be kept for its nostalgic appeal, or simply indifference by the owner. Ghost signs are found across the world with the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Canada having many surviving examples. Ghost signs are also called fading ads or brickads. In many cases these are advertisements painted on brick that remained over time. Old painted advertisements are occasionally discovered upon demolition of later-built adjoining structures. Throughout rural areas, old barn advertisements continue to promote defunct brands and quaint roadside attractions. Many ghost signs from the 1890s to 1960s are still visible. Such signs were most commonly used in the decades before the Great Depression. Ghost signs were originally painted with oil-based house paints. The paint that has survived the test of time most likely contains lead, which keeps it strongly adhered to the masonry surface. Ghost signs were often preserved through repainting the entire sign since the colors often fade over time. When ownership changed, a new sign would be painted over the old one.”

The first versions of Nimbus Sans have been designed and digitized in the 1980s for the URW SIGNUS sign-making system. Highest precision of all characters (1/100 mm accuracy) as well as spacing and kerning were required because the fonts should be cut in any size in vinyl or other material used for sign-making. During this period three size ranges were created for text (T), the display (D) and poster (P) for small, medium and very large font sizes. In addition, we produced a so-called L-version that was compatible to Adobe’s PostScript version of Helvetica. Nimbus was also the product name of a URW-proprietary renderer for high quality and fast rasterization of outline fonts, a software provided to the developers of PostScript clone RIPs (Hyphen, Harlequin, etc.) back then. Also in the 80s, a new, improved version of the Nimbus Sans, namely Nimbus Sans Novus was designed. Nimbus Sans Novus was conceptually developed entirely with URW’s IKARUS system, i.e. all styles harmonize perfectly with each other in terms of line width, weight, proportions, etc. On top of that, Nimbus Sans Novus contains more styles than Nimbus Sans. Now, Nimbus Sans is also available as Round (like the popular URW fonts Futura Round and Eurostile Round). The Round versions are intended to facilitate the work of designers and typographers. The fonts can be used directly, without further preparatory work in graphic programs as finished, high-quality Rounds.

Brasserie, the font, is a tribute to all brasseries since they are wonderful places to relax and enjoy food, wine and friends. It is also a salute to Parisian neon sign makers who continue in their difficult quest to adapt type, including script, into fragile, gas-filled, electric glass tubes. I tried to capture the spirit of these neon signs and combined it with the loosely styled handwritten menus written on blackboards that are usually placed outside Brasseries. You will find Brasserie to be very useful in many situations where you need clarity with style in a reasonably compact width. It is also creates an unusually even texture in sentences. Brasserie is a fairly upright script with a large x-height, which helps to save on overall width. Like a brasserie, the font is a relaxed and informal script, useful for logo, packaging, menus, editorial, advertising, invitations, etc and is available for Mac and PC in Opentype, Truetype and Postscript versions. In France, a brasserie is a café doubling as a restaurant with a relaxed setting, which serves single dishes and other meals. It can be expected to have professional service and printed menus (unlike a bistro which may have neither), but has more informal eating hours than a full-fledged restaurant. Typically, a brasserie is open every day of the week and the same menu is served all day. The word 'brasserie' is also French for brewery and, by extension, "the brewing business".
