The Vale Press was a contemporary of Willam Morris's Kelmscott Press. The types used by the Vale Press were designed by artist Charles Ricketts, who also supervised the design and printing of Vale Press books. The main type used, Vale, was based on the Jenson 15th century roman type style. The King's Fount was an experimental semi-uncial font based on the Vale type. The King's Fount was designed in 1903 for the Vale edition of the 15h century poem "The Kingis Quair". This semi-uncial font evokes old English and Anglo-Saxon lettering. Let it be known that this font is named for Excalibur, King Arthur's Magic Sword. The font is derived from a note that Arthur hastily penned to his Queen, Guinevere, during a lull in one of his many battles against the Saxons. Arthur's armour was so hefty that he could not easily seat himself, and so to pen his letter to Guinevere he plunged his legendary sword Excalibur into the marshy soil on which he had been fighting and thereby steadied his writing hand with the hasp of his magical sword. This ancient and battle-weary font is based on the writing from a fragment of that original document. It has been heralded by modern scholars as "grunge" writing of great antiquity. This is the one and only Neil Bold, designed by Wayne Stettler in 1966 and originally published as a Typositor typeface. An award-winner and instant celebrity upon its release, Neil Bold became synonymous with magnified modernism for a whole generation. It was a jazz record packaging favorite, especially at Blue Note records, and made regular appearances on science fiction book covers during the last stretch of the genre's golden age. This digital version greatly expands on the film type one. New small caps and biform styles were added to the authentically revived main face (for a set of three fonts), and language support has been extended to include all Latin-based tongues. Spiraltwists is a family of 2 fonts giving assorted spiral shapes. In each font they're grouped in fours - the same basic spiral in 4 different orientations (N S E W almost), and Spiraltwists has solid lines making up the spirals, Spiraltwists Antique has dotted lines making up the spirals, giving them an antique or rustic appearance. Spiraltwists has heavier spirals on Upper Case, lighter spirals on lower case; plus a group of spirals with a straightened outer end and connecting lines so you get two spiral scrolls joined together by a long line at the top or bottom. Dossier is a monospaced serif face that originates in Dwiggins's designs for typewriter. It has a soft and casual personality and comes in 8 weights and matching italics, making it ideal for text typography, package and advertisement design. Dossier is an adaptation of William Addison Dwiggins's unfinished typewriter faces. He worked with multiple typewriter manufactures including Underwood, Remington Rand, and IBM, but none of them were finished. He left a number of intriguing drawings which are now kept at the Boston Public Library. You could see in the drawings that Dwiggins was also interested in exploring designs of varied width. Toshi Omagari decided to combine these materials to make a cohesive family: the upright was taken from a drawing of monospaced lowercase for an unknown client, and the italic was from the work he did for Underwood which he called "Aldine". Toshi added narrower and wider alternates in the same way Dwiggins devised.

Typefaces don't simply appear fully formed to a designer, even with a clear concept in mind, they evolve naturally during the design & development process. Out of the current 'Artytype' collection, Omni has evolved the most, being a stripped back off-spring from several exploratory exercises.
