The February 19, 1923 issue of The Film Daily contained an ad for Mack Sennett's new Ben Turpin comedy entitled "The Shriek of Araby". No doubt this was a spoof of the popular Rudolph Valentino film "The Sheik". The ad tries to emulate Mideastern or Arabic typography via a standard Western alphabet. It somewhat captures the flavor, but its free-form hand lettering comes off as more of a novelty-type style. This is now available digitally as Desert Sands JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

With its split serifs, Vglee looks like it could be a copy of an “Old West” font but it is not. It was constructed by taking a motif and applying it regardless of consequences. Vglee does not have lower-case letters but it does include a full set of Western and Central European accented characters. Its distinctive, odd appearance can be useful in small doses for decorative purposes. The VgleeStar style contains only the ornament. It is intended to be used in layers with Vglee.

Goldbarre is a finely engraved slab serif face in the spirit of ‘between the wars’ commercial confidence. It’s a solid and dependable face of distinction for use on certificates and posters which need to convey an emphatic yet refined message. The letterforms of Goldbarre combine finely hatched shading with and embossed, three-dimensional, quality. One in the series of fonts called Whiz-Bang Wood Type, intended to be set large and tight. Pilot Point is based on an older font found in Dan X.
