A European font from Bauer's foundry was the inspiration for the caps in the font. There was no lowercase, so we designed one. Although the original font was intended for display lines in advertising, our version reads quite well in smaller point sizes, too.

Tokoloshe is a name in African mythology for a mischievous leprechaun-like figure that loves practical jokes and tricking people. There are many books of such African stories, for example Tales of the Tokoloshe by Pieter Scholtz. The letter shapes that I used in the Tokoloshe font have inspiration from two sources: -- the spiky character of the font was derived from the wonderfully imaginative, wooden carvings of the Makonde people of beings called "shetani". The word "tokoloshe" is used by other tribes, but from his behaviour, he is certainly a type of shetani. -- some of the letter shapes were informed by Art Deco styles of fonts, for example: Kunjani, Black Tie SF, Selznick Normal, Zaire SF, Binner Gothic and ITC Anna. But the Tokoloshe font, like its namesake, is much more freespirited. Use this font whenever you want to suggest the rich artistic, cultural and spiritual heritage of Africa. The font is fully professional in terms of its character set. It contains over 235 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). In fact, it has all the accented characters used in the major European languages.

My affection for Slab Serifs began in the early 1960s in Kansas City when Rob Roy Kelly was at the Kansas City Art Institute, teaching and writing his book on American Wood Type. I got to know him just well enough to gain access to his fabulous collection of wood type and wood type catalogs. Later, in the1970s, I tried to re-create a Nebiolo Egiziano for Roger Black at New West magazine. And again for Roger, in the 1980s, I designed a Slab Serif logo for Newsweek Magazine. Finally, in 2003, designed the Sutro Family. There were things I didn't like about it, so, over time, I’ve been adding some things and dressing it up a little. Sutro Shaded has existed for a few years as a one color, outlined, drop-shadowed display font. It seemed like it was just dying for a little color. I added five more fonts: Fill, Gradient, Hatching, Rules and HiLite. These fonts can be used in different combinations to achieve various effects. Quiller is another catch from the hot metal days, another one that managed to slip through the fingers of both the photo-typers and digitizers of last 4 decades. JJ Sierke’s Privat design from 1966 is now resurrected and heavily extended to be used by computer users everywhere. The original design was revived, and two whole new fonts were added to it - one with very unique swash caps and alternates, and one with many many ligatures and letter-combination ornaments. Quiller is a cross between brush calligraphy and very casual fast handwriting. It even has a slight Arabic simulation to it. Given such traits, the addition of a swash font and a multitude of ligatures comes in very handy to keep the natural flow of the font and maintain the elegance of its spirit. Those who like the auto-magic of OpenType’s intelligent substitution should like the fact that the OTF version is a single font with all the bells and whistles ready to go in the swash and discretionary ligatures features. VLNL Beatbox is a solid tech heavy straight stencil-face with a lot of character. It was originally designed as a logo for dj Markus Schultz back in 2004, who rejected it. His management couldn't read it, or thought people wouldn’t be able to read it. But Chef Donald DBXL found the concept interesting enough to finish it and has used it in many projects since. It was the identity font for the Battle of Amsterdam, a talent showcase in beat boxing and other skills. Beatboxing is a style of hiphop music (beats) made with the mouth and a microphone. A box is a handy container to store stuff. Like food, or fonts. We use a lot of boxes at the VetteLetters office. VLNL Beatbox is best deployed big, like in logos or headlines. Refresh was inspired and partly based on handwritten text from advertisements for a popular cola-based soft drink from the 1950s. I designed the missing characters in the handwriting style of the original. The Refresh family comes in three styles: - Lite- possibly the most elegant of the three styles -- use at larger sizes for greater legibility; - Med -of intermediate weight - more legible than Lite; - Blak - for bolder statements and best readabilty. Refresh, with its three styles, is ideal for any display work needing a feminine, handwritten effect. Use it for product branding, book covers, invitations, greeting cards where you're looking for charm and movement. Refresh has not been designed to be used with capital letters placed next to one another: it is not advisable to use text in "ALL CAPS". ITC Japanese Garden Ornaments is a symbol font designed by Akira Kobayashi (before Kobayashi became Linotype's Type Director in 2001, he worked as an independent typeface designer in Tokyo). The images in Japanese Garden are, as the name suggests, mostly floral or herbaceous, derived from designs used in Japanese indigo stencil dyeing. In Japanese Garden," Kobayashi says, "I tried to create a set of type fleurons that are very familiar to a Japanese eye, but not too exotic to people in other countries." Several of the designs fit together seamlessly in repeating patterns; others work either together or as isolated ornaments, a flexibility that also characterizes traditional Western type fleurons. "The original illustrations," notes Kobayashi, "were mostly cut from white paper squares, about two by two inches in size, and were simply scanned and traced. That is why there are few smooth curves and perfectly straight lines in the illustrations. I simply liked the ragged textures of them.""

The 10th Regiment of Foot is a British military unit raised more than three centuries ago—and perhaps most famous in the U.S. for seeing action on American soil during the Revolutionary War in the Battle of Lexington and Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill. Military Scribe is modeled after the compact, utilitarian script on the mid- to late-1770s muster rolls of the Tenth of Foot. I incorporated the work of at least three separate scribes, merging their neat old penmanship into a legible disconnected cursive. Perhaps the most versatile of all our vintage handwriting fonts, Military Scribe might faithfully reproduce antique letters, labels, lists, or just about any document of the period. Baro is a powerful, fun and expressive font, great for loud, cheerful and super-fat headlines and packaging for odd novelty toys. With its bold and distinctive stylized geometric forms, it is ideal for logos, heavy machinery and wacky party invites. Baro had its beginning in a handful of rigidly geometric uppercase letters from an unidentified 1960�s or 70�s era press-down lettering font, which in turn was possibly a revival of a 20�s era Art Deco font. The exercise quickly expanded into a complete typeface with 300+ characters, including several catch words (word glyphs), stylistic alternates, discretionary ligatures, multilingual support and both lining and old style numerals. Baro maintains much of the characteristic geometric rigidity of the original handful of letters, but � With the addition of just a little bit of flare, a bit of cheerfulness breaks through, like a wink and a smile on the face of a fat and otherwise stern policeman.

Core Escher is an optical illusion type family which has two sub-families: Core Escher A and B. Core Escher A has impossible shapes inspired by the optical illusion works of artist M.C. Escher. The letterforms in this type family are structurally twisted and complicated but it looks simple because of its simple strokes. And for easy color variations, it split into two fonts, Core Escher A Left and Right. Core Escher B has a different kind of optical illusion. The letters of Core Escher B look like three dimentions by just putting thin lines on bold letters. Also B has two sub-families that have different viewpoints. Core Escher Family supports complete Basic Latin, Cyrillic, Central European, Turkish, Baltic character sets. Well, yes, the Hedge Backwards font is all fine and dandy and does resemble the lettering legerdemain of comic book lettering robot, Richard Starkings... but has it been tweaked over the years to better suit the writing stylings of ELEPHANTMEN creator and writer, Richard Starkings?
