Conveyor Belt was designed for an environmental paper made from sugar cane waste called bagasse. The paper mill use conveyor belts to produce the paper from when the bagasse gets loaded to the finished paper product. This was the inspiration for this font. Take The Money is a wonky all caps font, made with a Sharpie pen. The name was inspired by something I read in the newspaper: apparently a Danish artist received €72.000 from a museum to create two works of art. The works of art should depict the average income of someone from Austria and someone from Denmark - in real money. The museum then loaned him the €72.000 and told him he'd receive €3.300 for his work. The artist decided that €3.300 would merely cover the costs, so he delivered two empty canvases and called the work: Take The Money And Run.

First presented by the Bauer Type Foundry in 1928, Futura is commonly considered the major typeface development to come out of the Constructivist orientation of the Bauhaus movement in Germany. Paul Renner (type designer, painter, author and teacher) sketched the original drawings and based them loosely on the simple forms of circle, triangle and square. The design office at Bauer assisted him in turning these geometric forms into a sturdy, functioning type family, and over time, Renner made changes to make the Futura fonts even more legible. Coriander is the work of British designer Timothy Donaldson. It started out as a doodle one afternoon Donaldson was bored and uninspired. He wrote the word Coriander" and was then distracted by the sun beating through an adjacent window. He taped the writing paper up on the window as a shade. He took it down a few months later, folded it up, and stuck it in his pocket. When the piece of paper fell out of his pocket a week later, he was inspied to draw the rest of the characters, two alphabets in his sketchbook. The final digitized characters were created by Donaldson using a Wacom tablet and later refined on the screen."

FinalSix is the typographic adaptation of a lettering. Working on the graphic image for a sports event (the European Waterpolo Final in 2014) we had the idea of creating a character set that reflected the idea of the undulating movement of water in a pool. In practice, we draw characters with rounded tops, bottoms and diagonals and using the word WATERPOLO as a visual reference for a wavy feeling, in a process that we could define as “form follows meaning.” To preserve its personality as much as possible, the most idiosyncratic characters are found in the Default set, while we can find more standardized variations for editorial use in a Stylistic set.

A unique design accurately revived by Steve Matteson in 2021. Frederic Goudy designed Companion Old Style for Women’s Home Companion in 1928. In his own words: “I believe the new letter I showed him, both in roman and italic, is one of the most distinctive types I have ever made. It incorporates features which deliberately violate tradition as to stress and curves, but which are so handled that attention is not specifically drawn to the innovations introduced.” Companion Old Style exudes the style of pre-World War 2 Americana. The unique characteristics are wonderful for greeting cards, wedding announcements and holiday invitations. Companion’s nostalgic letterforms are light hearted and quirky yet highly readable.

Argyle Rough was originally developed for a packaging campaign in the late 80s in my studio and sat around in various stages of completion until I decided to autotrace my original drawings. I liked the quirky roughness and decided that it did not detract from the charm of the original, in fact it improved it and saved me a whole lot of work. The original campaign called for a few additional alternate characters for use at either end and double in the middle of words, ee, ff, ll, ss etc and a stylized Th, always useful. I hope you enjoy Argyle Rough, named after the world’s largest diamond mine – a rough diamond, get it?

Patricia Pothin-Roesch's Tendria typeface bases its letterforms on the logo for the French “Tendriade” mark. Clearly inspired by writing and hand lettering, Patricia Pothin-Roesch began her work on Tendria in Adobe Illustrator. After a few letters, she went back to designing the old-fashioned way: drawing by hand on layers of tracing paper. Tendria is a sturdy upright script face with a warm, childlike feeling. Its letters are like the typefaces often used in primary schools; the counterforms are large and open. The name Tendria is reminiscent of the French word for tender, “tendre.” Designers who set Tendria lovingly will reap rewards; this is an excellent addition to a display heading toolkit.
