Even though the phrase Art Nouveau originated in Paris at the shop of Siegfried Bing, the French preferred to call it Le style moderne. This very sinuous, very Art Nouveau typeface was designed by an E. Mulier around 1894, probably also in Paris. The organic, vine-like curve forms are frequently seen in the art of the period. Examples include the architecture of Victor Horta, the furniture of Henry van de Velde and the jewelry of Max Gradl. Mulier Moderne is an all-cap font with a full Western European character set plus ST and TH ligatures, an alternate ‘E’ and two glyphs of period printer’s cuts. Warning: do not use for extended text. As as a computer programmer, it is my job to stare at screens of text all day. As soon as I learned the mechanics of font design, I boldly set out to design a typeface from my own handwriting that I could use to make my life easier. First, it had to have very distinctive numerals (trust me, it can be easy to mistake an 8 for a 3 in code), it had to have huge punctuation characters (even Perl code like '[lN*1lK[d2%Sa2/d0' looks good in Debug), and it had to be a bit friendlier than Courier (so that I don't give up hope when my code won't compile). I had so much fun designing it that I decided to give it strange lower-case 'i's and 'm's as a bonus. I also spent far too much time hinting it so that it would look as nice as possible at low resolutions.

Modern typefaces refer to designs that bear similarities to Bodoni and other Didone faces, which were first created during the late 1700s. Ed Benguiat developed ITC Modern No. 216 in 1982 for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC). Showing a high degree of contrast between thick and thin strokes, as well as a large x-height, this revival is more suited to advertising display purposes than the setting of long running text, or books. Many traits in Benguiat's design are worth further notice. The thick stems of the roman weights have a very stately, solid presence. Their thin serifs have been finely grafted on, a masterful solution to the challenge of bracketing presented by Modernist designs. The italic weights have a very flowing, script-like feel to them, and the letters take the form of true italics, not obliques. The ITC Modern No. 216 family contains the following font styles: Light, Light Italic, Medium, Medium Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Heavy, and Heavy Italic.

Garbata was designed in 2020 by Francesco Canovaro, looking for an approach to sans serif design that ignored the over-exploited grotesque and modernist models. Zulu-Ndebele Pattern is the first ever font to be based solely on the traditional decorative patterns of the Zulu and Ndebele tribes of Southern Africa. The designer has lived in KwaZulu (Place of the Zulu), for over 50 years and has made a life-long study of traditional Zulu beadwork and carving, and of Ndebele wall decoration. There are 52 pattern units that may be combined in many ways to create borders, backgrounds and an unlimited number of designs. The pattern units correspond to the upper and lower case letters. The reason that the Zulu and Ndebele patterns have been grouped together is that the true tribal areas are contiguous and the there has been much artistic cross-fertilization between the two cultures. Many of the patterns that are used by the two tribes are identical.

The letterspacing is set wide for body copy use. The main purpose is readability and reading comfort. ITC Avant Garde Gothic¿ was designed by Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase in 1970. They based it on Lubalin¿s logo for Avant Garde Magazine - an exciting construction of overlapping and tightly-set geometric capitals. ITC Avant Garde is a geometric sans serif; meaning the basic shapes are constructed from circles and straight lines, much like the work from the 1920s German Bauhaus movement. The early versions of ITC Avant Garde became well-known for their many unique alternates and ligatures that still conjure up the typographic aura of the 1970s. These fonts contain the basic alphabets (without the old unusual ligatures). Still strong and modern looking, ITC Avant Garde has become a solid staple in the repertoire of today's graphic designer. The large, open counters and tall x-heights seem friendly, and help to make this family work well for short texts and headlines. The condensed weights were drawn by Ed Benguiat in 1974, and the obliques were designed by Andr¿ G¿rtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt in 1977. ITC Avant Garde¿ Mono is a monospaced version done by Ned Bunnel in 1983.

Diaconia Old Style is a new rendition of my workhorse body copy font that I originally designed to use for the body copy of "Printing in a Digital World." I became increasingly upset with the lack of lowercase numbers and true small caps. Diaconia started life as a modification of one of the Dutch Bible fonts I traced. It has changed a lot since then (although I have a hard time telling how much because I have lost the original). The plain and italic work especially well when used in very large sizes as display faces. The other four variants (small caps, heavy, heavy italic, and black) are designed for use in book production. Because I format all my own books, I was able to design fonts that met my needs exactly: lowercase numbers, SMALL CAPS font, Mac Command, Option, and Control symbols, ballot box in the section slot, and several other special characters. DiaconiaPro is the OpenType family of my body copy workhorse. This is the first font family I ever created: classic, elegant, easy to read. 583 characters: small caps, oldstyle figures, numerators, denominators, lining figures, accents and a lot more.

The major focus of my life and ministry at this point is book design. In the brave new world of 21st century self-publishing a new paradigm has arisen: the indie small shop. One of the problems is that all books are published as ebooks, and many books are published only as ebooks. There are two problems with this: character availability and licensing. The licensing problem is solved by including an ebook license with all of the Librum E fonts. The character availability is the core of the design. OpenType features do not work yet with ePUBs [though it is in the spec, if I understand correctly]. Kerning doesn't work, and so on. So these five fonts have only the 256-character [or less] ASCII set. A separate small caps is included. It has lining figures {proportional} and small caps instead of the graphics. The other four fonts have graphics to give bullet choices in lists, oldstyle figures {proportional}, and care given to character shapes so they will work better without kerning. CA Saygon Text is the logic consequence of CA Saygon. It is much calmer and therefore also suitable for reading texts and everyday’s editorial tasks. Basic shapes and proportions were adopted from Saygon and continued in such a way that a font family from Thin to Extrabold resulted. A fundamental inspiration were early static grotesque typefaces such as Akzidenz Grotesk. Nevertheless, the typeface was by no means intended to have a historical look. Thus, a relatively high x-height was chosen, which makes the typeface quite economical in type-setting, since the letters appear visually larger. A relatively small line spacing with good legibility can be achieved due to the small ascenders and the low cap height. Letters like f and t, which otherwise tend to end in curves, were given right angles, which on the one hand meets certain design elements of the original Saygon, but on the other hand also refers to contemporary trends in typeface design. A special feature are the five styles in which CA Saygon Text can be used. The default setting is the Helvetica style, with two-storey a and g. The Futura style has a single-storey a and a two-storey g accordingly. The third style with two-storey a and three-storey g is called the Franklin style. But the real highlight is the Cape style with single-storey a and three-storey g – a real rarity up to now. Let yourself be inspired by this unusual typeface. If you like it even more progressive, you should try the flat style, which continues the right angles in a, g, and y as well. Thanks to the Cyrillic and Latin Extended character sets, a huge linguistic area is covered that even extends to Vietnam! Even the exotic German capital-double-s is available and appears automatically when typed between other capital letters. Numerous OpenType features make life easier for the professional typographer: there are fractions, superscript and subscript numbers, as well as proportional and tabular capitals.

Patricia Pothin-Roesch's Saussa typeface began life as brush-lettered artwork for fruit salad packaging in France. After the key letters had been painted, Patricia Pothin-Roesch switched to digital tools to create the final font. True to its roots, Saussa is a real advertising face, perfect for point-of-purchase displays. Even its name is consistent with its intended area of application: Saussa sounds a lot like the word “sauce.” Saussa is an informal script; its outstrokes function almost like serifs, and the capitals have a lowercase structure. The feelings this typeface conveys are due to the hand of its creator, Patricia Pothin-Roesch, an experienced brush-letterer.

Drunk Cowboy is a bouncy version of the popular Old West type style, inspired by hand-made signage in Paducah, Kentucky. The strokes are loopy and loose. The exaggerated terminals give this font a loud, boisterous presence. Drunk Cowboy is a brutish rogue that emanates the fierce independence of Rio as played by Marlon Brando in One Eyed Jacks, but it is most like Paul Newman's Butch Cassidy—a mischievous wise-cracker. And there's gold worth mining for in this font. Dig deep enough and you'll find swash characters and special ligatures, like Th, ST, CT, NT and other popular letter combinations found in the Cowboy dialect.
