Bay Tavern is the first weathered version of our Tavern font that's based on Algerian. Gothic fraktur inspired design, I wanted to resemble old german calligraphy but making it very geometric, so I used an isometric reticle during sketching. This is a display font, created for BIG sizes, non textual. I recommend it for branding, poster, logos or titles. Its very experimental -- it exists within the limits of legible and illegible reading. I choose the name “Garbancera” because gothic calligraphy has issues that are linked with dark, gloomy, lugubrious things or fear feelings, culturally in Mexico. I related this with death and for mexicans, death is something we celebrate and give us joy and happiness, annoying, the most representative Mexican characters, one of those is “La Calavera Garbancera” or better known as “La Catrina”, a clothes skeleton with only a hat. It was drawn this way to make a critic to all Mexicans at that time, that were poor but they wanted to represent a high lifestyle, “those that where to the bones, but with a French hat with ostrich feathers”. La Catrina was created by José Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican lithographer but also a newspaper illustrator. I think this is a beautiful font that can lead to great results, just use it wisely.

The inspiration source for MFC Spindler Borders is a collection of border treatments revived from the “Catalog 25 TYPE FACES” by Barnhart Brothers & Spindler. The border designs were recreated from two different border sets, “Classic Art Borders” and “Classic Black & White Borders”. This collection of borders represents a structured repetition of elements in various ways to create elegant patterns and backgrounds. You can start with a new document or work on a new layer within an existing document. Select MFC Spindler Borders from the font menu. (Some users may have font previewing enabled in the font menu which will cause the font name to appear as border elements, disable this option in order to choose the name) Make certain that the point size of the font is the same as the leading being applied to the font so the borders will meet up properly. Zulia is located in the west of Venezuela and it is the state in where Joluvian grew up. It is a region of sunshine, high temperatures, oil and cheerful people, although we choose the name to honor his mother who is from there (zuliana) and who is proud of her land and everything that it represents the area. Zulia is also his first typographic project. It is based on two of his favourite calligraphic styles: italic and brush pen. He started with simple and contrasted strokes on paper with brush and marker. After that he developed the full alphabet and its various options for each letter, starting from a set of handmade forms that could be connected in different ways according to the user needs. What motivates him to involve this style was to create a differentiation with his daily work by generating a heavier type, contrasted and low rise. Zulia finally got life of its own with the participation of Alejandro Paul and a feedback of techniques and skills that were generated with the duo work. Zulia is not just a typeface, Zulia is his love of letters.

Katastrofe is danish for … well, catastrophe - you may have guessed that! This font was almost a catastrophe to make! I cut out all the letters in a cardboard, and went outside to spray the letters with a spraycan. Everything went smooth as planned, but suddenly the wind started to blow and the papers started to fly away! Luckily I found some stones I used to make the papers stay in place. Lucky for me - otherwise it would have been a catastrophe! Seconds after finishing this font project, it started to rain…I just avoided a catastrophe! But is this font really a catastrophe, or does it just mimic punk/spray/grunge/riot? Make your own statements using Katastrofe, or perhaps your very own punk sayings like “Punk is not dead”, “Anarchy Rebel” or what suits you the best. Whatever you choose to write, you will definitely get that real punk look! This font is inspired by Johannes Janssonius, well know as Jan Janszoon o Jan Janssonius (Arnhem, 1588 – Amsterdam, 1664), was a Dutch cartographer, publisher and engraver. Married to Hondius's daughter. He was the author of many masterpieces of cartography of the 1700s like Willem Blaeu and Hondius, famous maps with heavy use of decorations in the letterig to fill the spaces of oceans, seas, lakes and scrolls. Now you can easily recreate not just ancient maps without effort, but you can use this font creatively, to make unique, modern logos, product names, fresh packaging, hip fashion outfits, refined labels, signs, coordinated images ... Hundreds of alternatives to choose from and maybe to combine with other fonts in an original way. John Seddon (1644-1700), was a famous English writing master, the leading calligrapher of his time, and master of Sir John Johnson’s Free Writing School in Priest’s Court, Foster Lane. His portrait was drawn by William Faithorne and was engraved by John Sturt as the frontispiece for his copy-books, such as ‘The Ingenious youth’s companion’ of c.1690 and 'The pen-man’s paradise' of c.1695. And, on the other hand, you can get the animal and human kingdon inspired penmanship forms in the Bestiario font. The “SeddonsFleurons” will complete the collection. Fantastic choice to elaborated barocque/renaissance inspired and historical accurated layouts.

Based on the lettering used on Alan Turing’s famous code-breaking machine at Bletchley Park, the “Bombe”, and the subsequent British answer to the German Enigma machine, the Typex. Research done at Bletchley Park on their restored and antique machines provided the inspiration. The unusual shapes for the capitals have all been retained - the square O, the monospaced characters and other eccentricities that make it unique. This reference material was then extended to the numerals (which did not exist in the original) and a full international character complement. The initial design of the bombe was produced in 1939 at the UK Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park by Alan Turing, with an important refinement devised in 1940 by Gordon Welchman. It was based on a device that had been designed in 1938 in Poland at the Biuro Szyfrów (Cipher Bureau) by cryptologist Marian Rejewski, and known as the "cryptologic bomb" (Polish: bomba kryptologiczna). The Bombe was used to break the German Enigma code on a daily basis, and was a vital part of the Allied war effort. The British “Typex" (alternatively, Type X or TypeX) machines were an adaptation of the commercial German Enigma with a number of enhancements that greatly increased its security. It was used from 1937 until the mid-1950s, when other more modern military encryption systems came into use.

Stamen is the answer to a big question: What would happen if one tried to create a typeface that was ‘out of time’? If a type designer was to turn off the internet and put away the type specimens and just try to explore limbic, phantom history, what might that look like? No slavish explorations of the past. No gropings toward the future. No exhaustive core sample of the contemporary. Instead, using what one remembers of history and our collective vision of the future (usually a future imagined from the past) and channeling that into something that is, hopefully, new… The Bentons meet Frutiger for a Manhattan on a space station while Matthew Carter sways to the sweet sounds of the chorale that occasionally played through the halls of Stephenson Blake. This smear of implicit history expressed without explicit reference—this is Stamen: a family of 12 typefaces with a ton of alternate characters. The bold weight was designed for the LP “I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler” ( http://ittfwbc.com/ ) by the band YACHT in response to their request for a typeface that was ‘lost in time’, and refers to neither strict historical models nor purely futuristic forms. I built a small family out from there. It works well in text, but just as well for display setting. I think you’ll enjoy using it.
