Rukou originated as a logo for a fashion designer. The idea was to make a fusion of a geometric typeface with the flavour of childish features. Rukou was inspired by school hand-writing models, but adds very specific and interesting features to it. Rather than focusing on readability, the primary goal was to have a unique type texture. This is the reason why lowercase is disconnected. The disconnected letters opened the possibility to create the special shapes for individual letters. One of the odder things I remember from high school (50+ years ago) is the tile floor of hexagons in the bathroom. There is something fascinating with the way hexagons fill the plane. BakerHalfDozen is made of white letters that fit on black, hexagonal tiles. BakerHalfWhite switches the letters to black on white tiles, and BakerHalfBare eliminates the tiles. There are no true lower-case letters, but some letters have alternate shapes. To make the tiles line up right, alternate lines must be indented half a space. Use the {} characters (brackets) to do this.

These are the letters I doodled in the margins of my high school notebooks. As it turns out, a man named Milt Glaser doodled them first. He doodled a lot of other amazing things too. Mr. Glaser called his blocky alphabet Baby Teeth. I think the type looks better when it says Surfside, so that's what I called my incarnation. This version has been digitized and expanded, and is available for Mac and PC. These letters remind me of the 80s and the 90s, of Gotcha shorts, Ocean Pacific shirts and fluorescent windbreakers.
