Inspired by an image of the chamfered block lettering of a semi-faded “ghost sign” for the Thomas Drug Co. in Thomas, Oklahoma, Local Druggist JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions. “Ghost Signs” are the visible remnants of hand-painted signs on buildings where the original business had long closed or moved, yet the lettering had survived the passing years.

A short-lived TV game show from 1977 called “Second Chance” has its logo lettered in a bold, block type style with slightly chamfered corners. While “Second Chance” only lasted one season, the show was re-tooled - and debuted in 1983 as “Press Your Luck” – which ran until 1986.

Comalle is an organic typeface that rescues some elements of handwritten script, but its stroke does not necessarily answer to a literal calligraphy structure. So Comalle could produce a powerful impact on the page, it was designed with thicker strokes than its counter forms. The objective is that the black of the letter fills the page and causes a fastest visual impact than typographies that balance blacks and whites. One of the most important tasks of the Comalle design was to think of how to handle the unequal percentages of blacks and whites in the typeface. The peculiar thing, is that the precision work of the letter does not make the blacks, but the whites; this is the reason why in one first instance it was very valid to start off designing in a very gross way, nevertheless, the majority energies are put in the details of the design of counter space. Nudista is a monolinear, geometric sans-serif based on the proportions of the Purista typeface, released in 2007. The forms are not based strictly on square shape, but rather on a pleasant oval, round shape. The letter outlines are smooth, even technicist, the geometric precision is however compensated in places where it would get in the way of legibility and compromise the desired visual impact. Nudista was originally conceived as a display type, but it is sufficiently legible even in text sizes. Thus, it suits short texts in corporate prints. Carefully chiselled letter curves are sturdy and well suited for the harsh conditions of low-resolution printing devices, they work well on computer screens and mobile phone displays. However, Nudista works best in corporate systems, navigation and orientation systems, where it may be, also thanks to the sufficient range of weights, a good alternative to the well-known and thus a little overused DIN. Naked typeface with no needless decorations humbly serves in all places where too expressive types could be disturbing.

Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is a species of holly, native to the USA and Canada. I thought it was a rather cool name (pun intended) for a messy script font made during a cold spell. Winterberry was created using Chinese ink and a crappy brush - hence its messy appearance. Use Winterberry on your alt-Christmas invitations, your fantasy novels, your rock albums or your website! You’ll love it! Comes with a bunch of diacritics and some ripe double letter ligatures as well.

Linotype Bariton is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Designer Alexej Chekoulaev designed his font in one weight to mirror the Zeitgeist of the early 1930s. The characters of this extremely bold font are based on the form of a rectangle though its rounded edges soften its look a bit. Linotype Bariton should be used only in larger point sizes in headlines which should really catch the eye.

Chinoise, a CastleType original, is based on hand lettering that is reminiscent of a style of ancient Chinese square-cut ideograms (perhaps cut in wood), and therefore the suggestive name "Chinoise" for this new design. There are alternate forms for each letter in the lowercase. Although square-cut, all corners of the letters are slightly rounded to give a more organic, weather-worn look. Uppercase only with support for most European languages, including modern Greek, and languages that use the Cyrillic alphabet.

Inky Fingers… Well, the name says it all! This rather obese font was made by hand (literally) using my index finger, some sheets of paper and a lot of Chinese ink. As the eco-paper absorbed quite a lot of ink, I had to do a second ink-run! Inky Fingers is a very legible typeface, ideal for headlines, books and posters. It comes with Babylonian language support - including the Schwa/schwa glyphs for the Azeri speaking crowd. Ain't I nice?
