Michael Hoffmann manufactures digital fonts for 30 years. At URW++ he contributed to the technological progress. Over the years, he also specialized in the ideal representation of fonts on screen and the complex assembly of international fonts with scripts of all countries. In his latest project he put the emphasis on developing a highly readable typeface. Less interested in the design as in the functionality of this typeface, he designed Arsapia which he has now installed as a system font on all his computers. Michael Hoffmann studied Japanology at the University of Hamburg and traveled in the early years of his professional activity frequently to Japan, there to train the IKARUS font production tools to Japanese customers. In his spare time he plays guitar or golf depending on the weather. The typeface Arsapia has been designed in such a way that all three font styles Light, Regular and Bold have the same width. When a user therefore opts for the use of Arsapia Light, even though he has already written his text in Regular, nothing changes with respect to the letter tracking. When choosing the Bold for emphasis: Nothing changes except the blackness of the letters. A font change does not engender unwanted line and page breaks of itself. All letters can be clearly distinguished from each other. 1 l I O 0 are all different. For programmers and lovers of monospaced fonts Michael Hoffmann has developed a fourth typeface: Arsapia Mono. This is the perfect terminal font.

After the Second World War, the Ionic style replaced Modern Face as the favored typeface for newsprint. Ahhh, who doesn't want to sleep late? That’s excactly what a “sovetryne” wants ... even though he/she often sleeps way to much! But that’s not the case with this font. It’s legible, even though it’s slightly worn. Change between upper- and lowercase letters to variate the typing - and turn on ligatures, in order to use the substitution of double letters such as aa, bb, cc and many more!

Olio is a chunky geometric sans serif typeface. The bold version takes inspiration from classic geometric fonts like Futura and works well when creating clean, balanced typography. The inline version is the same font with a stylish and decorative stripe effect to each character. Olio inline is a nod towards graphic design champion Lance Wyman and his typographic treatment for the iconic Mexico 68 Olympic identity. Although both versions are designed in reference to great (timeless) graphic design from the past, they have a contemporary finish making them suitable for any design purpose or application.

The term starboard derives from the Old English steorbord, meaning the side on which the ship is steered. Before the steering wheel, boats were steered by an oar at the stern of the ship. Since most sailors were right handed, this is where you would find your steering oar! Starboard font is a rough, handmade, brushy kinda font. It was, of coarse, made with my favourite cheep brush and Chinese ink - resulting in a slightly eroded looking font. Starboard comes with all the trimmings, including double letter ligatures for the lower case.

I have no fantastic story on how I came up the name to share with you. I am currently not in an asylum, nor will I be in the near future. I also finished this font way before midnight, so it is just a crazy name for a scary looking font! Midnight Asylum was made with a pencil and Chinese ink. It comes with a full set of alternates for the lower case letters, extensive language support and a cute .notdef character, which is also the alternate asterisk glyph.

Core Bandi is a grunge 3D font supported by equivalent ‘flat’ styles named Core Bandi Face. This typeface is very cute and has rhythmic flow line, but not distracted. And you can easily make various color combination with CoreBandi & CoreBandi Face. Its really hard to find doodled 3D Korean(Hangul) fonts even in Korea because Hangul has as many as 11,172 characters. Diorite is modern face built on classical letterforms -- but left with a bit of residual roughness. Some might call Diorite forthright, others brutal. (It reminded the designer of the dark, hard igneous rock of the same name, treasured by the ancient Egyptians for statuary.) The typeface has a relatively chunky, four-style family; the italics are true cancellaresca corsiva, also writ heavy. "The cancellaresca is of course a Gothic design," notes the designer. I like playing around with brushes and Chinese ink. I always have some kind of idea of what the final design should look like, but once it’s done, it never ever looks like what I had in mind. Apex Brush is one of those designs: it started off as a few brush strokes, but before I knew it, I had a really nice set of matching brush fonts! Use it for any design that needs a bit of rough, a splash of ink and a pinch of rebel.

Lachrymose is a word that stems from ‘lacrima’, the Latin word for tear. It means ‘tearful’, or ‘given to weeping’. Now, before y’all think I am depressed or so - I am not. I just like the sound of this word and the way it is written. All I needed to do was to build a font for it! Lachrymose is a handmade brush font. I used my fantastic Chinese ink and a cheap brush to create the glyphs. Lachrymose is a display font, so use it for anything display-ish.

Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. There is no set date, but normally it is held around the end of October and beginning of November. Samhain font was made with a bamboo pen and Chinese ink on rough paper - hence the grungy look. It is quite a heavy font, so I wouldn't set a complete text in it, but it is ideal to create headlines, posters, postcards and invitations. Of course, Halloween comes to mind! Samhain comes with extensive language support.

I am not really a creature of habit, but when I start working on a new font, I make myself a cup of coffee first. I guess you can call that a habit, so I decided to name this font Force Of Habit. Force Of Habit is a nice brush font - made with a cheap pencil that I borrowed from the kids’ colouring box and my trusted (and seemingly ever flowing) Chinese ink. Force Of Habit comes with extensive language support, some alternates and - quite possibly - a faint smell of freshly roasted coffee..

The inspiration source for Chaoxiang Monogram is another hand-drawn treasure from a vintage embroidery publication which plays on the anglo-version of chinese letters with stabbing strokes and the charm of the orient. While the original intent of this monogram style is uncertain, the possibilities of its use are up to your imagination. This is one of many monogram designs from the early 1900’s which fall into a two letter format bound within a framing element. Motley Crew is my last font for 2016. It is quite a lively, quirky and a little bit scary typeface, which will give your designs a little more ‘joie de vivre’. It was made with a soft brush and Chinese ink. The splatter was added after I had painted the glyphs. I forgot to put away my laptop, which now looks like this font… Motley Crew wishes you all the best for the coming year - in a lot of languages, as it comes with a generous splatter of diacritics.

Briller is a super-wide display sans that covers 6 weights, from delicate Thin on one side to chunky Ultra on the other end. Briller tabular figures (via the OT feature) and most of figure related glyphs (such as monetary symbols) are the same width throughout the weights, leaving fun possibilities in pairing them up in contrast while retaining that sense of tabular order. Cooks call thinly cut - like matchsticks - vegetables "Julienne". I found that was a fitting name for this very narrow typeface. Julienne Slim is the extreme cut of the two. Personally I do not use narrow typefaces very often, but from time to time they come in handy if there is much text to be crammed into little space.
