Novelty songs and their often crazy or extra-long titles were all the rage at the beginning of the 20th century. A piece of sheet music for the 1920 song "When Chu-Ching-San weds Paddy McCann" had the title hand lettered in an unusually bold form of Asian-inspired lettering. This has been recreated digitally as the type font named for the song - Chu Ching San JNL.

The name comes from a British expression about two things that couldn't be more different, and it suits this offering to a tee. The uppercase of this typeface is based on 1930s lettering by French poster artist Charles Loupot, and the lowercase is based on 1910s lettering by German plakatmeister Ludwig Hohlwein. Oddly, the two seem to play together well. Both versions of the font include the 1252 Latin and 1250 CE character sets (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

Chaweng is a coastal region on Ko Samui, an island in the Golf of Thailand, about 20 miles off the mainland. The design of Chaweng is based on some 'Latinese' characters Peter Rosenfeld detected while celebrating Chinese New Years Eve with people from Thailand and China on the beach of Chaweng. Ralph M. Unger took on the idea and developed a completely new typeface, very beautiful, very 'Latinese'. Chaweng obviously shows some of the typical characteristics of Chinese ideograms, still keeping a high level of legibility. To add something really special, Unger digitized the Chinese signs of the zodiac which change annually, on the occasion of the Chinese New Years Eve.Chaweng is perfect for signs and small texts, e.g. for any Asian restaurant and shops, menues, displays, China towns etc.

I have always liked Weeping Willows, they sort of remind me of China. During my years as a tour guide, I spent a lot of time in China and I can tell you that the Chinese love weeping willows - they plant them everywhere! Weeping Willow was created using a Japanese brush pen (bought in China actually…). It comes with double letter ligatures and a bunch of swashes as well.

Because except for Yang, there is also Yin in Chinese culture. The name 'Lianhua' means lotus in Chinese. Kempoka is a Japanese word describing someone who practices Kempo. Kempo, or Chuan Fa in Chinese, is a martial art with roots in China and Japan. I thought of this brush font just before my weekly kempo-training and I figured the name suited the font style. Kempoka comes with alternates and ligatures, and has a black belt in diacritics!

The Qipao name is derived from the traditional Chinese dress that Manchu women wore in China in the 17th century and became known as the qipao (旗袍), meaning “banner gown”.
