The design of Cyan was inspired by features found in classic Roman and styles like Trajan and Bodebeck. The characters stay true to the same features as the capitals, resulting in an unusually distinctive style. The Capitals version contains Roman numerals. Cyan's weight is similar to Trajan's but the horizontal strokes are slightly bolder resulting in better legibility for small sizes, especially for lowercase characters. Cyan Sans evolved out of the hugely successful Cyan Serif family. Cyan Sans retains the same geometric Roman proportions with open centers in B,P,R b, d, p . This helps create a thick and thin stroke illusion since the actual strokes don't vary much. There are many subtle details in Cyan Sans that become more interesting in larger sizes. The beauty of Cyan Sans is that it has no features that "jar" the eye. The result is a very pleasing and distinctive sans that scales well. Katlynne is unpredictable. Katlynne is erratic. Katlynne is beautiful. Katlynne is an alternating contrast, sans serif type family. Arbitrarily separating the characters into ‘rounder’ and ‘straighter’ letterforms to determine what contrast each glyph will take. Katlynne is inspired by the observations made while watching the inexperienced use of broad tip pens. I found how and when individuals rotated their pen gave a visually intrusive, if not also pleasantly conspicuous effect. Often, the pen would naturally rotate horizontally (vertical contrast) on the rounder letterforms, and vertically (reverse contrast) on the straighter ones. This is more or less the formula Katlynne adopts as the contrast changes throughout the styles. Katlynne’s severity of contrast varies from ‘Negative Three’ to ‘Positive Three’ in four weights. With a central style ‘Book’ being the sensible, low contrast font in the family. Within the family there are four weights with 7 contrast styles, with complimenting true italics. Giving a total of 56 fonts! Katlynne's array of options works for creating stylistic similitude within layouts, where conspicuous title faces are needed with a cohesive text face to compliment. A rare natural history book from the early 18th century served as inspiration for the MVB Sirenne typefaces. The artisan who engraved the book—likely a map engraver—had a distinctive style of lettering that was used on the descriptive captions for the many tropical fishes depicted in the book. The plates used to print the illustrations would have been copper, the letterforms hand-engraved. The designers at MVB Fonts found the distinctive quirks of the roman letterforms and the eccentric stress of the italic interesting enough to embark on developing digital fonts based on the engraved samples. As the captions were hand-lettered, there was a great degree of variation, making a direct “revival” impossible, so Alan Dague-Greene interpreted the characteristics of the letterforms into a workable typeface design. The challenge was to retain a rustic quirkiness to the forms, yet have a typeface that was useful for more than display. The solution was to make optical sizes. The “Six” faces are full of character, but strong and open for clarity at small sizes. The design of the “Text” faces is more subtle, so that they can be used for passages of text, but retain the feel of their model. MVB Sirenne “Eighteen” and “Seventy Two” are intended for display use.

From the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, by way of Toronto, comes Martie's handwriting. Martie Byrd is a school teacher in Roanoke, Virginia, and a friend of Canada Type's Rebecca Alaccari. After years of admiring the cheer and clarity of Martie's handwriting, we asked her to write out full alphabets for some cool font treatment. The intent was to do three different versions of her writing in two different pens, then use the auto-magic of OpenType to determine letter sequences and rotate character sets on the fly when the fonts are in use. A successful endeavor it was. Take a look at the images in the MyFonts gallery to see the character rotation in action, along with a visual explanation of why Martie is not just another handwriting font. Unlike other available felt tip and ballpoint handwriting fonts, the regular and bold variations are style-based, not weight-based. They are the handwritten expressions of two different Sharpie pens: The fine point one (Martie Bold), and the ultrafine one (Martie Regular). The style-based variation considerably helps the realism needed in design pieces that take advantage of the contrast of two different handwriting fonts. Weight thickening in handwriting is an obvious mechanical effect that only happens with computers. Weight changing by replacing pens is what happens in the real world. Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold each contain three different character sets in a single font. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European languages for all three sets. This translates into each Pro font containing over 750 characters. Add OpenType code and stir, and you have true handwriting fonts with versatility unavailable out there in anything else of the genre. A software program that supports OpenType features is needed to use the randomization coded in Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold. Current versions of QuarkXpress and Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illlustrator, InDesign) do contain support for the randomization feature. But if you don't have one of these apps, you can still use the interchangeable Type 1 or True Type fonts and change the characters manually to achieve the appearance of true handwriting. Bombelli is a font that looks like it has been handwritten by a meticulous architect in one of those hand-drawn blueprints of the old days. I chose the name to honor one of my ex-bosses -- a graphic designer-architect who taught me a lot of things when I was young and needed the money. One of the things he taught me – and probably the most important one – was to always be on time in the morning. He never said a word about me being late, but it worked. He taught me about being meticulous in detail and many other things I only appreciated much later. This clear and straightforward font deserves bearing his name. First things first: I am really not a Star Trek fan. I did come up with this name, which I thought had a good ring to it. When I checked whether the name was already taken, I found out that Black Cluster is a term from Star Trek. Now you want to know what a Black Cluster is, so just check out poster 2 and read all about it. For me, Black Cluster is a handmade ink font, with a lot of jumping glyphs, a lot of diacritics and a handful of ligatures. It may be rough, but you will be pleasantly surprised by what it can do to a design! May the font be with you. Oh, no, that was from Star Wars…

Constant is a meticulously constructed slab serif display typeface of a sturdy lineage. The strong horizontal and vertical rhythm and calculated angles dominate its appearance, yet sweeping broad shapes infuse the design with an overall warm undertone. Constant is best suited for setting short headlines, word marks, posters and other visual communication ephemera. Particular when set in all uppercase the typeface’s squarish and resolute nature commands attention and projects authority. Despite the prominent slab serifs and their angular corner details, these fonts work well also for shorter text passages, especially in the lighter to medium weights. When typesetting Constant in paragraphs spanning several lines the face requires a fair amount of leading to not appear vertically compressed. As customary for Underscore’s catalog the fonts have very extensive support for languages in the Latin script, reaching from Afrikaans to Vietnamese and Zulu. The fonts are carefully spaced, kerned and hinted, and include a variety of typographic glyphs and OpenType features like various ligatures, number features and case alternatives. Constant has been developed and released in 2018 as the proud forth release from the Underscore label. Herr Pfister was a printer in the city of Bamberg Bavaria. He is known to have published nine works. And it has been contentiously argued that he printed the “36 line Bible.” He was responsible for two innovations. The first was printing in his native German language and the second was the use of woodblock prints to add illustrations to the text. These were both first with the use of movable type. He was heavily influenced by Gutenberg’s typefaces but there are a range of notable and also subtle differences between the two men’s output. He was known to be active in the industry from about 1460 to his death in 1466. This font was specifically based on his "Biblia Paperum."
