Genia is a script typeface that carries roundhand calligraphy DNA. Instead of using pointed nib pen, Genia was created using a fine brush resulting in clean and wavy character. With the OpenType features, Genia creates the natural feel of calligraphy writing. This contextual feature makes the font 'smart'. It knows which letters are the initial and which one is the finial. A 1930s WPA (Works Projects Administration) poster advertising a play entitled “Abraham Lincoln, The Great Commoner” had the play’s name done in a hand-lettered Art Deco sans. This is the basis for Art Project JNL. According to Wikipedia, “the Works Progress Administration (renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration; WPA) was the largest and most ambitious American New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. In a much smaller but more famous project, Federal Project Number One, the WPA employed musicians, artists, writers, actors and directors in large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects.”

Plumper than a misguided Z-lister's dodgy lip job, this is Quinella, named after the cheffy scoops of ice cream and the like, quinelles. It's a cute, fat script with a seventies vibe but a personality all of its own. It's non-connecting in the usual sense, but the letters overlap to make the white space as tiny as possible. Ligatures (standard and discretionary) make smoother solutions for quite a few pairs and trios, and every upper case letter has a more exuberant swash alternate. The contextual alternates feature substitutes in an alternate t for a better fit with certain letters. Fonts don't come much more voluptuous than this. The full-fat, creamy appearance makes it perfect for food packaging, but don't let it end there; it'll make memorable logos, unmissable headlines, and posters with more punch.

Cherubina means ‘Blessed’. It is a name derived from the Akkadian “karabu / kuribu”, meaning “blessing, blessed”. A cherub is a type of spiritual being mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, often depicted as a baby with wings. This font was based on the hand lettering I found on a 1962 Japanese poster for the movie “Mother Joanna Of The Angels”. The poster was designed by Hiroyoshi Oshima. Cherubina font is an all caps font (upper and lower case differ and can be used together) with a medieval feel to it. I tried to keep the ‘spirit’ of Hiroyoshi Oshima’s lettering, but changed the glyphs and designed most of them myself, as I had nothing but the title of the poster to work with. I have added some ligatures as well. Comes with my blessing and an eternity of diacritics.

Of all student work produced in Joost Schmidt?s Bauhaus classes, Reinhold Rossig?s (1903?1979) alphabet designs are perhaps closest to his master?s teachings: monolinear, geometric lettering, constructed on grids using compass and ruler. Drafts by Rossig, dated 1929, also demonstrate explorations of letterform width and x-height. Almost ninety years later, Elia Preuss carefully preserves Rossig?s letters and considerations in a proper typeface, by overcoming most of the optical mistakes captured in true geometric letterforms. To carry Rossig?s design further away from Schmidt?s influence, Preuss also lent more characteristic letters found on poster designs by fellow Bauhaus student Hermann Werner Kubsch. SPQR Senatus Populusque Romanus or The Senate and People of Rome as quoted by the likes of Marcus Tullius Cicero or Tully to his friends and Titus Livius otherwise known as Livy. SPQR appeared on battle standards carried by Roman troops and no doubt can still be seen chiseled into stone facades across the old empire of the ancient Romans. This evokes visions of stonemasons delicately inscribing messages that were meant to endure, one which can still be seen on the Trajan column circa 114AD. Emporia Roman is a modern display font that was inspired by the craft of those ancient artisans, with an added lowercase set, some flourished alternates, an oldstyle set of figures and now with a matching Italic.

The above-the-store signage for many newspaper stands, soda shops, candy stores, luncheonettes and pharmacies of the 1950s and early 1960s were what was referred to as “privilege signs” provided by one of the major cola brands. Consisting of the brand’s emblems on the left and right, the remainder of the sign would carry the desired message of the storekeeper (such as “Candy – Soda – Newspapers”) in prismatic, embossed metal letters. Inspired by these vintage signs, Privilege Sign JNL recreates the condensed sans serif lettering style in both regular and oblique versions. The typefaces are solid black, but adding a selected color and a prismatic effect from your favorite graphics program can reproduce the look and feel of those old businesses.
