When Madison and Austin were cities, when brie was a variety of cheese, when radon and alar were hazardous substances and NOT FIRST NAMES? Burghal Design remembers the good old days, when people were not named Whisper, Zandren, Skylar or Dakota but were called Eleanor, Arthur, Edward and Irene. In the spirit of these classic monikers, we give you Mildred, a script font family for proud and simple folk: the down to earth Mildred Plain, hearty Mildred Stout, the barely-there Mildred Scrawn,and the barfly Mildred Cocktail. There's also the slightly more formal (but still all-purpose) Mildred Fancy, bolder Mildred Strong, and the wisp of Mildred Mild. Rounding out the family is Mildred Ornaments, a collection of symbols that can be used for snowflakes, for bullets, or just for fun. Mildred: just an old-fashioned, hard working font.

I decided to create Hebrewish because the only Hebrew Latino font I have ever seen didn't really live-up to my expectations. Each Roman letter and Arabic numeral in this font is based directly on one or more of the Hebrew characters. Originally I was tempted to create an upper case only - since there is no lower case in Hebrew that I know of. But, as this would have limited it's usefulness, I changed my mind and added a lower case also. Nevertheless, those who want to create very Hebrew looking text, need only use the upper case. I've also added some typical Judaic symbols for the artistic minded, e.g. David's star *, the Menorah ^(Jewish candelabrum) and brackets{ } based on this, as well as brackets [] which, used together, produce a 'Ten commandments' stone-tablet symbol(use this [~] for another version). In short, you can either have some fun with this font or use it for serious work - the choice is yours.

A few emails sent to Canada Type have asked for more “bad scripts”. A few others asked for "more Mascara-like treatments". And some asked for more fonts of “distressed elegance”. Whatever you like to call this style of doubled-script font, sightings of designs using it have become common within the last few years. Such fonts have become the standard in expressing elegant confusion, old chaos in modern settings, recycled histories, and rebellious ideas. This style is quite often seen on chic clothing, music packaging, some sports paraphernalia, surfer and skateboarder gear, even book covers. That said, the Heathen font was made to include an advantageous feature that other distressed scripts do not normally have: More intertwined over-swashing in the majuscules. This over-swashing is quite useful in settings where the stroke and fill colors differ, or complement each other. It is also quite the point of emphasis where the idea is to show elegance gone ancient, old thoughts in a modern wrapper, rust never sleeping, or the very basic limits of the world’s nature. The original Heathen was made by redrawing Phil Martin’s Polonaise majuscules and superposing them over the majuscules of Scroll, another Canada Type font. The lowercase is a superposition of Scroll’s lowercase atop a pre-release version of Sterling Script, yet another Canada Type font. Heathen Two was made in a similar way, by combining two pre-release Canada Type scripts.

Catich’s seminal thesis on the origins of the Roman inscriptional style, such as that found on Trajan’s column, Richard Lipton’s Canto traces the path from an expressive, preparatory Brush (with Brush Open to preserve gestural details at smaller sizes), through informal Pen, to the formal Roman. Flyers, Intros from James Bond films and PlayStation games as well as the typeface Senator from Zuzane Licko inspired the Dutch designer Paul van der Laan to create his font Linotype Rezident. To its design, van der Laan says, I was designing a business card for a friend and I had a certain mood in mind for the typography. I tried to capture this mood in a couple of sketches, drew a few characters directly onscreen and just expanded them into a typeface." And so began Linotype Rezident, with its cool, technical and constructivist appearance which brings to mind computers and virtual reality. And the name? " The name of the font comes from the game Resident Evil. One of the main characters in the game is called Leon and the typeface was initially drawn for a friend of mine called Leon. It also refers to the city of The Hague - where I live and got my education - since it's often called 'de residentie'", where the queen and parliament of The Netherlands are seated."
