An indomitable woman who traveled a lot, Emily Austin (Bryan) Perry was one of the children of Moses Austin, of Austinville, Virginia. Like her famous brother, Stephen F. Austin, she settled in Texas as one of that region's earliest colonists. While traveling about seeking treatment for a sickly daughter, she wrote many letters home -- letters that show a distinctively compact, legible hand. The challenge for me in designing the face: resisting the temptation to read and re-read her bossy directives and urgent appeals, all packed tightly together on a page. Emily Austin has a complete character set, and then some.

Punkaholic started out as a loopy, all caps display font with a semi condensed feel. Before completion some of the letters such as A and W were given a more traditional look and were penciled in for alternates. In the end, however, they were added as uppercase characters instead. For this reason most words in lowercase vary in appearance from their uppercase counterparts. This dichotomy between straight lined capitals and rounded ones makes for some interesting contrasts. I really like Wales; I like the culture, the people and the language. I also like the Welsh legends, especially the ones about King Arthur and Merlin. I am reading a book about Arthur right now, so when I was working on this font, I wanted to give it a Welsh name. Caerphilly is a town in Southern Wales and is home to an immense 13th century castle (Castell Caerffili). Caerphilly font is based on a 16th century manuscript. I kept the glyphs rough, to give it ‘ye olde’ look. Comes with a hoard of diacritics, a bunch of double letter ligatures and some alternate glyphs as well.

I came across an old book called ‘Studio Handbook Letter And Design For Artists And Advertisers’ by Samuel Welo. Samuel Welo was an American advertising calligrapher, typographer and lettering artist, who was most active during the roaring twenties. Lenox Avenue is my version of a set of letters in that book. It was handmade (just like Welo had done). I only had an ABC/abc to work with, so I designed all the remaining glyphs myself. I changed some of the original (and quite quirky) letters to a more contemporary form. The font is named Lenox Avenue, once home of the famous Savoy Ballroom. Comes with all the bells & whistles.
