A set of vintage wood type printing blocks yielded the alphabet which was to become Chamfer Serif JNL. With its heavy vertical serifs and interesting character shapes, the design is unique when compared to the more familiar wood type offerings of the past.

German type designer Verena Gerlach created this sans FontFont in 2008. In 1999, Jeff Levine released a freeware font called "Channel Tuning JL" scanned from drawings made with a felt tip marker and designed as if the letters were breaking up due to poor reception such as on pre-digital TV sets. Over a decade later, Jeff has totally reworked the font—giving it cleaner lines, an extended character set and renaming it Channel Surfing JNL to set it apart from the roughly-drawn original.

Inside the pages of an untitled sign painting textbook (circa 1902) was an example of the classic chamfered sans serif alphabets used by tradesmen of the time. This version was wider than most, and perfect for a digital version called Wide Chamfer JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Sheet music published in the 1860s for "The Soldier’s Chorus" [from the Gounod opera "Faust"] had the title and the arranger’s name hand lettered in a bold, condensed chamfer font. This was the basis for Condensed Chamfer JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Type books and lettering manuals of the 1900s were resplendent with examples of chamfered type faces, as this was a popular and simple style of lettering that was easy to reproduce with little effort. Poster Chamfer JNL is one such example taken from one of these turn-of-the-century publications that exemplifies the style as a condensed version of the letters.

FP Dancer Tango is a humanist-influenced techno-like font, designed 2012-14 by Morten Rostgaard Olsen & Ole Søndergaard. Chamber of Commerce JNL is loosely based on a type style used for some rubber stamp letters and numbers from a vintage child's printing set. Originally a cast shadow design, Jeff Levine felt the lettering merited a direct treatment in both regular and oblique styles without the shadow effect.

Based on some 1930s-era ‘block chamfer’ gummed paper lettering, Chamfer Stencil Sans JNL is a stenciled treatment of the original design; available in both regular and oblique versions.

Another bit of font inspiration came to the attention of Jeff Levine through his friend Gene Gable. An image of vintage packaging for Aquapruf Ear Drum Protectors (swimmer's ear plugs) offered the narrow and condensed lettering that is the basis for Slim Chance JNL.

Lettering has an unusual way of adapting itself to many needs. The type style for Sporting Chance JNL was based on metal house identification letters used for Welcome Home JNL. The same type of block design was prevalent in 1920s-1930s era window signage via die-cut foil characters. Yet we tend to nowadays associate block lettering with sports-themed items. No matter the application, Sporting Chance JNL will fill the bill.

The typeface which inspired this offering was originally called "Chaucer", not because it is typical of lettering of Chaucer’s time (which it is not) but, more likely, because it’s pretty funny, even if the humor is low. Another purveyor of low humor, Mack Sennett and his Keystone Kops, suggested this version’s name. Both versions of this font include the complete Unicode Latin 1252 and Central European 1250 character sets.
