Bushing is a quick serif experiment going for open light display type. For years I have always stopped and really liked what I saw with fonts like the original Cushing from the turn of the 20th century. This time the desire for a font was stirred by Felici's article in CreativePro on fonts from the beginning of the 20th century, especially his captures of Cushing No. 2 and the version commissioned for Norwood press from ATF. I'm not interested in historically accurate reconstructions. My desire is for the general feel I get when I see a font. As a result, Bushing has little to do with Cushing (other than the last six letters). But it is a Serif font with small serifs and a huge x-height with a very open feel. I like it. I hope you do also. I made it into a limited display version of OpenType Pro. I added small caps and oldstyle figures, as I can hardly work without them. But ligatures seemed silly for this one.

This is the digital makeover and major expansion of a one-of-a-kind melting pot experiment done by VGC and released under the name Mardi Gras in the early 1960s. It is an unexpected jambalaya of Art Nouveau, Tuscan, wedge serifs, curlycues, ball endings, wood type spurs and swashes, geometry and ornamental elements that on the surface seem to be completely unrelated. But the totality works in a surprisingly loud and playful way that really defies categorization. The typeface Belwe, created in 1926 by German typographer and teacher Georg Belwe, has an uncommon style that is difficult to describe. It is a synthesis of many different genres: it is a slab serif with Art Nouveau style but also with many blackletter influences. The angled serifs on the ascenders and the calligraphic flourishes on the the upper and lowercase V, W, and Ys reference marks made by pens. There are also many other special characters that are unlike any other designs. Have a look at the fun lowercase a, the quirky lowercase f and g, and the unique C, F, L, and R for the uppercase. Pepperwood font is a joint work of the typeface designers K.B. Chansler, C. Crossgrove and C. Twombly. These artists also created the typefaces Rosewood, Zebrawood and Ponderosa together and as the names suggest, all of these typefaces are so-called wood types. The origins of this kind of typeface can be found in the early 19th century. Called Italian or Italienne, these typefaces quickly became very popular. They are distinguished by square serifs whose width is larger than the stroke width of the characters. When the letters are set together, the heavy serifs build dark horizontal bands. Pepperwood font has a couple of unique characteristics of its own. Small squares decorate the middle of the letters and the edges of the serifs are not straight, rather, they have small, fine tips. Pepperwood is reminiscent of the Wild West with its shootouts and heroes, but also suggests the glamor of the 1970s with their platform shoes and wild hair-dos. Magendfret is a typeface that was designed very mechanically. However, it is also the optimal typeface for expressing soft warmth. Magendfret was designed by constructing a "line." That is: it is based on the concept "it is the combination of a straight line and a curve with a character." I made the character from the act of using and constructing a vector graphics editor, a mouse, and a keyboard. That, I thought when constructing it, should make neither a roman type nor italic type into a novel form, and a very general form. Once those characters were bit-map-ized, they traced again mechanically by the vector graphics editor. It became a soft impression by this work. The very mechanical act of changing the thickness of a line uniformly constitutes the family. The thickness of seven patterns was created first and, finally it results in four patterns. Respectively, styles called Light, Regular, Medium, and Bold are attached as usual. The name Magendfret is meaningless. It is an anagram of a certain words selected very arbitrarily.

The Quarantinus font was created during the 2020 covid 19 lock-down. Tranquility being all around, the JOEBOB graphics studio almost felt like a monastery, and as a result my style of writing and my choice of pen had to fit. All this writing was turned into an authentic handwritten script font with over 150 ligatures, which make it look very credible and spontaneous. The font is especially suitable for personalized 'handwritten' notes, cards and messages. It can be used on T-shirts and on shop-windows. It has an 'instant logo' quality, it can be used for tattoo-designs and it screams home-made everything. Mayonez is a typeface with rational structure and axis but softened with rounded contours and cupped serifs, getting as result a balance between seriousness and friendliness. The shapes have a soft appearance but without lacking definition. A more fluid structure influenced by calligraphy is proposed for the italic variants, in this case the uppercase letters adopted a simplified semiserif structure that works better with the lowercase letters. Also the figures are very different from the roman version and follow more faithfully the italic style. In an attempt to give Cyrillic lowercase romans a fresh look, symmetrical serifs inherited from the versal tendency are mostly avoided thus getting simpler structures closer to the latin forms. This type is good for commercial and editorial uses like advertising, packaging and pages with showy headlines where a warm touch wants to be given. The character set includes a group of figures and currency symbols with standard height and another suited to match better with lowercase letters. Mayonez was selected to be part of the Communication Arts Typography annual in 2015.

Ballet Mechanique is a custom designed font for musician Jeroen Borrenbergs, aka Ballet Mechanique. For his upcoming record releases Jeroen asked me to create a special font for him. As co-founder and graphic designer at Stoere Binken Design he creates his own artwork and therefor had very specific wishes. The font should be warm, soft and have soul. He gave me some sketches for his logo that I should use as a starting point. The result is a very narrow, kind of techno, monocased font called "Ballet Mechanique" (what else). After having served his purpose, Jeroen Borrenbergs allowed his font to be sold publicly. Jeroen Borrenberg’s debut work, in 1996, received hugely praising reviews. Muzik Magazine made Evolutionary Entities techno single of the month, Laurent Garnier and Mister C constantly played it in their sets and Morgan Geist just said “I won’t do a review here - let me just encourage all of y’all to listen to and/or pick up the new Eevolute 12″. Beautiful stuff - complex, melodic, soaked in just enough reverb to take it to another room. Check or regret.”

Gorgonzola Gothic is a geometrically-inspired gothic sans serif family that's robust and versatile. Inspired by the geometric quirkiness of IxD (also by The Ampersand Forest), Gorgonzola Gothic expands into a thirty-style family that works for everything from branding to text. It further mitigates IxD's quirkiness by offering two options in the round and shouldered lowercase glyphs. The standard letterforms, like IxD, have notched joins, giving them an assertive, almost futuristic look. It started with an italic, or to be more precise, half an italic. The slanted styles of Urge Text exhibit a certain bipolarity, the tops of glyphs having a standard italic form, the bottoms of glyphs being more Roman in their construction. This sturdy footing really locks the italics to the baseline, making them very legible while still being distinct from the uprights. The same bipolar approach didn't work very well in upright styles, so the Romans are more toned down. Ranging from the almost monoline, Egyptian style light weights to higher contrast ‘Modern’ bolds, there is much potential for use in typographically demanding scenarios. The family consists of six weights, normal and condensed widths, all with italics, making a total of 24 fonts; it’s a highly usable text typeface with an array of OpenType features. All styles include small caps, multiple figure styles (proportional- and tabular-, oldstyle and lining, small cap proportional figures, numerators, denominators, superscript and subscript), standard ligatures, alternate forms (stylistic sets), automatic fractions, case sensitive forms, and a handy (perhaps!) ‘percent off’ ligature in the discretionary ligatures feature.

My name is Teruyoshi Matsui. I live in Japan. I am a Brush Artist. I artistically write the letters of the alphabet with a Japanese brush. I have created the font “ BrushType Longhand”. It was originally named "BrushType Alternative". But I changed my mind before it was completed. At first I aimed at an alternative font. But while I was trying to make it alternative, I realized that it was not. Of course there are many alternative letters that you have never seen before among them, so you have to be careful using the font. If you are a progressive and defiant designer trying to discriminate against others' designs, you should own my font "BrushType Longhand". Be ambitious! This is the word I will give you. I am ambitious ,too. No one in the world creates brush fonts like me. I am the only one as a Brush Artist though no one knows. I will be a world artist some day. Iridium™ was designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1972 for Linotype. It is in the modern" style like Bodoni or Didot, in that it has the sparkle created by a high thick/thin contrast and a symmetrical distribution of weight. But the sometimes harsh and rigid texture of the modern style is tempered by Frutiger's graceful interpretation. Iridium itself is a very hard, brittle and strong metal; yet the Latin and Greek roots of the word mean rainbow, or iridescence. And indeed, this font is infused with a more lustrous and complex spirit than the average rather stark modern typeface - note the stems that gently taper from waist to serif, the nicely curved ovals of the round characters, and the slight bracketing of the serifs. Iridium was originally designed for phototypesetting, and Frutiger himself cut the final master photo-mask films by hand. This digital version has all the craftsmanship of that original and includes the roman, a true italic, and the bold weight. Iridium works particularly well for book and magazine text and headlines."

Arlonne Sans Pro was conceived by Sacha Rein between 2015 and 2019 with a comfortable reading experience in mind. It's a humanist sans with neoclassical influences. Arlonne is a comprehensive font family with four weights and matching italics. It has a character set of about 1800 glyphs, including extended latin, small capitals, Cyrillic (with Bulgarian, Serbian, Macedonian and Ukrainian) and Greek (with Archaic and Polytonic), math symbols, figure styles and automatic fractions, ligatures, stylistic alternates and many more OpenType features.
