M Kai is a design inspired by the popular Kaiti developed in contemporary China. MKai adopts many features of Kaishu, one of the many Chinese writing scripts and calligraphic style. Yet writing style and constructions have been well-unified to meet quality as typeface. Its strokes has relatively heavier stroke beginning and finishing, as well as thinner middle part. It is catered for fine print with little conglutination. Its medium weight makes it more visible at distance and pretty versatile in use. Zhonggong are tightly built with ample character spacing for good individual character recognition. It is best suited for formal body text, set upright (non-slanted), non-condensed.

Diaria Sans Pro is a sans-serif counterpart of Diaria Pro. With its extensive 9 weights and corresponding italics, extensive language support, and various OpenType features it is meant to build visual heirarchies of any detail and complexity in editorial design. Carnaby Street is a vintage style bold font that pairs strong rectangular framing with softer rounded elements. Neo Afrique sans a neo-futuristic typeface with a modern decorative twist. This typeface design came out of further development and refinement on an original typeface that i created some time ago, Durango Sans. True in nature to it's predecessor, Neo Afrique was also born out of this desire to fuse two different aesthetics, the geometric Neo-Futuristic aesthetic, fused with flourishing decorative forms from Art Nouveau and the later Lubalinesque aesthetics. This typeface will form part of a larger body of work that is meant to be an exploration of Afrikan neo-futurism, using the immense power of visual-linguistic narratives to catalyse new cultural movement and perception.

Memoire is an elegant linear hairline contemporary sans. It is based on the underlying form of Vanitas, yet is rendered in a nearly monolinear hairline weight. Memoire is intended to be used selectively for headline use starting at 60pt and above. Stylistically, Memoire retains Vanitas’ alluring, sophisticated sensibility that is directly inspired by high fashion. The delicate linear form creates a sense of cohesiveness and lends the typeface an intriguing lightness of character. The upright styles are complimented by a pairing of optically adjusted true italics, which were purposefully adapted to retain the sharpness of their counterparts. Abandoning traditionally executed cursive italic letterforms retains Memoire’s sharp characteristic through each style.

Linotype CoolWool is part of the Take Type Library, featuring winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. This font was designed by A. Leonardi and P. Wollein, who took their inspiration from clothing labels and care instructions. CoolWool is designed to look like it was stitched, a style of typeface which goes back to the hand embroidery of the time of Biedermeier. CoolWool, however, is a distinctly modern font with a technical feel. The font is not suited for longer texts, but CoolWool is good for shorter texts and headlines, especially because of the possibilities allowed by its three different styles, regular, stone washed (bold) and Cotton Club (outline).

Underscript, from designer Claudio Rocha, is an alphabet of capital letters in handwritten style. Each letter has a corresponding alternative form and using both randomly in a text can give it the look of real handwriting. One constant element in the font is its stroke width. The strong figures are even and have rounded corners, lending them a cheerful appearance. All other attributes vary from letter to letter. Wide and narrow, high and low, the figures line themselves up unevenly on the base line. So can Underscript create a dynamic overall image with contrast. Underscript is perfect for cartoons, comics and anything light and carefree.

As a graphic designer, sometimes it’s impossible not to be inspired by the Swiss Style, specifically the work of Armin Hofmann, who is one of its best exponents. Grids and grotesk and neo-grotesk typefaces are a fundamental part of the tools that make this aesthetic possible. A visual language that has caused full admiration since we were students. Therefore, we decided to design Armin as an homage to Hofmann’s work. Technically, we added stylistic sets applied to the letters –G, R, a, g, h, l, m, n, r, t, u, y– to make Armin more eclectic and suitable for the creation of any visual language.

They are optical corrected and there is always the same distance between the dots, with the aim to create more harmonic letterforms. The dots also vary gradually in size to reflect the thickening and thinning of strokes, giving the letterforms a sophisticated overall look. Banco was the first typeface work of French designer Roger Excoffon and was released in 1952. The strong forms look as though they were rolled out of sheet metal and feature upright, tapering strokes. The slight slant, the varying heights of stroke ends, and the relationships between line and curve give Banco font its sense of liveliness and dynamism. Excoffon did not design a matching lower case alphabet for his capitals, but this was accomplished later by Phill Grimshaw, who also designed the light weight. He deliberately 'underdesigned' the lower case forms, producing a more reserved alphabet based on the design ideas of the original.

ITC Handel Gothic Arabic is a modern Kufi design by Nadine Chahine, created especially for headlines and display purposes. One of my favorites. Rundgotisch is a easy to read for eyes that are accustomed to roman letterforms, yet keeps in touch with its blackletter roots. It was released around 1900 by Schelter & Giesecke of Leipzig, Germany. Can be used to set short text passages and pairs easily with many different decorative initials of the period. A very useful typeface. Don't leave home without it. According to Bringhurst, Schelter & Giesecke was formed in 1819 by Johann Gottfied Schelter and Christian Friedrich Giesecke. This old German printing house was sucked up by state-owned Typoart in 1946, after Marshall Zhukov and the Red Army had established Soviet dominion over East Germany.

I set out to create a solid, bold, strong, rugged font, one that would lend itself to any industrial type of use, and by that I mean industry in general, but probably sectors that would still be considered male preserves such as carpentry or metalwork. I thought specifically of mortice & tenon joints, whilst toying with shape and form for this self imposed challenge. I was also visualizing a router tool used for producing most wood joints nowadays. I think the general premise worked out well; in the end I settled on the name Mortice, referring to the slots or negative spaces that the matching part, or tenon would fit into.
