  2. Absentia Slab by DR Fonts, $19.00
Conceived as a slab serif companion to the Absentia Sans family, this typeface complements its sibling with charisma and style. Built on the same geometric framework, they combine and harmonize gracefully. Yet Absentia Slab stands on its own as a novel alternative to conventional options. Anchored by blocky serifs, it presents an appearance of stability and steadiness. Its audacious design integrates unique features such as vertical terminals in glyphs ‘a’, ‘e’ and ‘6’. To make optimal use of available space, one-sided serifs (and in some cases, simple strokes without any serifs) help maintain an airy, uncluttered footprint as seen in letters ‘m’, ‘E’ and ‘N’. This forward-looking typeface is well suited for a variety of projects: understated yet spirited, technical yet welcoming. It has a modernist appeal, while reminiscent of XIXth Century woodblock lettering. Designed by Daniel Robichaud, Absentia Slab is available in ten weights with matching italics and two variable fonts.

  11. Linotype Mindline by Linotype, $29.00
Linotype Mindline is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. With Mindline, the German designer Critzler plays with geometry and typefaces. Each character is basically a rectangle with a geometric form etched in it which happens to be a member of the alphabet. This formal style comes from the advertisement typefaces of the 1920s and is reminiscent of the constructivist posters of this time. The appearance of the characters take priority over the funcitonality and the eye can hardly recognize the forms of letters and numerals which meet it everyday. Linotype Mindline makes us take another look at forms which we see so often that we hardly notice them, only reading them for the information which they impart, and the font is therefore best used when the content of the text less important is than the impression its forms make.
  12. Hejira by Sudtipos, $49.00
Hejira means “rupture” and this concept was the primary principle that guided the creation of this typeface: to escape conventions and take up the challenge of designing letters with an unusual and fresh approach. Unlike traditional typefaces, each member of this somewhat atypical family has its own distinct personality and formal features. A thin, spiky font that looks like its sharp serifs could pierce through. A more experimental sibling, based on the same skeleton but taken to the extreme, that is best suited to setting big titles. An odd-one-out, sans-serif style whose shapes mimic those generated by the movement of a calligraphic pen. And a quirky fat-face with a flair for combining round curves with pointy elements. Regardless of how different they may be, all four styles feel part of the same system and can be used alongside each other seamlessly. The Hejira set includes multiple ligatures and supports a wide variety of Latin alphabet-based languages.
  13. Binomic by DearType, $19.00
Binomic is a sort of monospaced font family. "Sort of" because it was not designed with the sole purpose of being used as a coding font, but rather as a nice alternative to monospaced fonts in graphic design projects. It's a friendly mix between your average fixed-width font and a more geometric, wider sans, thus more of a display font than a text one. The Binomic family has both upright and slanted versions, each in four convenient weights. The family is equipped with 480+ glyphs, has Latin Extended and Cyrillic support (both Russian and Bulgarian), oldstyle figures, as well as a set of cute technical characters, alternates and symbols. The Binomic family is clean, amiable and really versatile, so it will fit most design applications - from greeting cards, menus, merchandise, book covers and packaging materials to websites and apps. It is legible and modern, kind of sleek but without any pretensions.

  15. P22 Dwiggins by IHOF, $24.95
Dwiggins Uncial is based on calligraphy by William Addison Dwiggins that he created for a self-penned short story, which appeared as an insert in the book-arts publication The Dolphin in 1935. This self-described “experimental uncial” lettering features rather unusual treatments of letterforms which combine manuscript calligraphy with modern idiosyncrasies. Dwiggins Extras is a set of decorative extras features 62 stencil and woodblock motifs adapted from abstract and representational Dwiggins designs. Although Dwiggins illustrated a number of books using conventional media, he is best known for his method of illustration that uses a series of hand-cut celluloid stencils or what he called “machine ornaments.” With these stencils Dwiggins (and other designers who use his ornaments) build-up repeated motifs and patterns into abstract designs and/or representational images which have a look that is uniquely Dwiggins’ own. Unlike other illustrators, Dwiggins’ style has not been commonly imitated and therefore his style is as distinctive today as it was 70 years ago.
  16. Schizotype Grotesk by Eclectotype, $25.00
A neo-grotesk with a bit more bite, this is Schizotype Grotesk. It's not your usual grot; this is purely display typography. Notches cut deep into the letterforms and the thick/thin contrast isn't always where you might expect. It's intended to be a challenging typeface - not beautiful or particularly 'useful' in any conventional sense, but it is at the very least interesting. In a world where everyone and their dog has their own grotesk offering, perhaps being interesting and that little bit different is in itself enough to give the face its utility. Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What really matters is what you think! Schizotype Grotesk isn't bogged down with a million and one OpenType features you'll never use, but it does include proportional and tabular lining figures; automatic fractions; numerators and denominators; superscript and subscript numerals; case sensitive forms; and five stylistic sets that change [a], [g], [y], [IJ], and [@] respectively.

  18. California Poster SG by Spiece Graphics, $39.00
Known to many eastern artists as the California Poster Letter because it originated in the West, this old 1930s style has reappeared in digital form. Carl Holmes, in his wonderful book on old lettering styles, pays tribute to this uniquely American design. Faintly reminiscent of the lettering of Fred G. Cooper, California Poster Bold is at times wildly exaggerated and boisterous. Letters appear to be inflated and loopy. The design might aptly be described as a kind of rollicking Cooper Black (Oswald Bruce Cooper). An extensive range of alternates and figures has been provided for your convenience. California Poster Bold is now available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version as stylistic alternates and historical forms. These advanced features work in current versions of Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress. 25. Omni by ArtyType, $29.00
Typefaces don't simply appear fully formed to a designer, even with a clear concept in mind, they evolve naturally during the design & development process. Out of the current 'Artytype' collection, Omni has evolved the most, being a stripped back off-spring from several exploratory exercises. At first glance and particularly at small scale, you'd be forgiven for thinking the basic characteristics have a conventional outlook; but on closer inspection, it's own distinctive, clean cut, subtle styling becomes apparent, revealing enough personality to stand alone or complement a wide variety of projects; subsequently, it's a font that won't go out of style quickly and may even become a modern classic in time. The Omni family has 2 distinct styles, sans and serif, each style being available in 4 weights; all 8 fonts have slanted options to match making a total of 16 fonts. Dictionary definition of OMNI: Combining form - Of all things, in all ways or places. Quite an apt name for a font with ubiquitous aspirations.

Sequel Sans is a new chapter in the book of neogrotesque typefaces. Its core idea and its name were conceived in collaboration with the max bill georges vantongerloo foundation. Honoring these roots, I designed Sequel Sans to be a clean and adaptable font family that is built upon a comprehensive system of styles. 8 weights, each with a corresponding italic, and a matching set of Variable Fonts are available in 4 optical sizes. These range from standard (for text sizes) to Subhead to Headline to Display—larger optical sizes come with tighter spacing and a number of gently adjusted glyph shapes. The design idea born on 2013 from Roman Schemme studies, where new version of Legan and other roman typeface projects was based on too. Orqquidea was developed in 12 sizes with 659 glyphs each enhanced with professional opentype features (aalt, ccmp, locl, subs, sups, numr, dnom, frac, ordn, lnum, pnum, tnum, onum, c2sc, smcp, case, dlig, liga, zero, salt, calt, ss01, ss02, ss03, ss04), plus a complementary Orqquidea Framed version with 226 glyphs and a Orqquidea Garden version that include floral ornaments and related dingbats with 102 glyphs. It can easily adapt to print and digital environments ideal for fashion branding and corporate purposes, magazine and book headlines and titles, cosmetic label design and even on contents with a modern and artistic air.

  36. Armature Neue by fontBoy, $15.00
Armature Neue is an extension and clarification of the original Armature family released in 1997. We made the distribution of weights more even, and added italics extra light and black weights. Originally consisting of four fonts, Armature Neue has twelve: six weights with accompanying italics. Although conceived as a display face, a number of alternate characters are included that can be used to regularize the type for text setting. Armature is one result of my interest in typefaces that are constructed, rather than drawn. Although it is basically a monoline design, there are subtle details throughout that compensate for a monoline’s evenness. As with all fontBoy fonts, there are dingbats hidden away in the dark recesses of the keyboard. When I first started designing this face in 1992, I called it Dino-I thought I would name all my fonts after famous pets-so the dingbats for Armature are dinosaurs. Designed by Bob Aufuldish with editing and production by Psy/Ops.
  37. Handsome by Shinntype, $50.00
Handsome was the first digital typeface to resemble nice, ordinary, fully cursive handwriting. Or neon. In 2005, Handsome Pro was one of the first script typefaces to utilize the OpenType format to simulate the natural quality of writing, by automatically substituting alternate contextual glyphs. The effect follows the conventional “joining rules” of calligraphy, which are a formalization of the way in which letter forms are modified in cursive handwriting for the sake of speed and efficiency—and also perhaps to make life more interesting. For the look of real handwriting, Handsome is most convincing at around 15 pts. At much smaller or larger sizes it works differently. At display size, the feel of the non-nib styles is very slick, more like a speedball Kauffman, owing to the smoothness of the finish. As script fonts go, Handsome has a relatively large x-height, which can be useful if you don't want the “writing” to look too small.

  39. Integra by Sudtipos, $39.00
Semi-serif? Semi-sans? Emerging from the hazy border that divides Sans from Serif, Integra aims to integrate both styles in a cool, elegant, contemporary fashion. With its sleek anatomy, flared terminals and almost non-existent straight lines, Integra was inspired by the stressed, modulated, unserifed letterforms incised in the early 15th-century ledger tombs at Santa Croce church in Florence, and the neoclassical grotto inscriptions at Stourhead in England that dates from the mid 18th-century. Integra, however, gives a contemporary, even futuristic twist to these references by featuring original, audacious shapes on key letters like L, E and X; as well as with the modern, generous proportions of its lowercase; infusing it all with a flowing, luminous, Latin American feel. Integra comes in several weights and italic styles, for text composition and display usage. Its rounded counterforms and arch-like shapes lend texts a spacious, neat, architectural quality, perfect for sophisticated content.
