The Parliament typeface was designed by Jonathan Hoefler beginning in 1995. A burlesque typeface in the Regency Blackletter style, Parliament was inspired by the ‘Four-line Pica Black No. 1’ typeface of William Caslon Jr (1821), whose enigmatic design for the letters E, G, I, N, V and Y hinted at a broader ambition to modernize the arcane shapes of the gothic alphabet’s capital letters. Parliament completes this project for the first time by including two sets of alphabets, one archaic and one modern, along with a third set of ‘small caps’ that restores to the blackletter the versatility of Roman type. Parliament was first used for the 1998 ATypI Conference in Lyon, and was published by Hoefler&Co in 2022.

With the famous and much used Eurostile and Bank Gothic in my mind I wanted to design a mono-line font as simple and legible as possible. A square with rounded corners, i.e., the letter ‘o’ as its basis. From there on back to basics, so straights remained simple straights with 90° endings, whatever the angle. Numbers are monospaced. The result seems to be a pleasantly balanced and neutral font. Excellent for display purposes and surprisingly legible in even small sizes. This perhaps typical approach by an architect led to the name of the font: ArchiType.

Inspired by the more than hundred years old classic Cooper Black, Chunk Black features a hefty character with rounded serifs and a soft yet sturdy overall appearance. Chunk Black provides a timeless and friendly feel and it’s very suitable for product and packaging design and any kind of display purposes from music business to restaurant menus and from t-shirts to band logos. Both Chunk Black and Chunk Black Italic are equipped with several OpenType -features and a total number of 87 alternate characters, set in Swash, Stylistic and Titling Alternates and Discretionary Ligatures.

Sheet music for the song “The Little Thing You Used to Do” (from the 1935 motion picture “Go into your Dance” starring Al Jolson and Ruby Keeler) had its title set in what closely resembled Bank Gothic Condensed. [Bank Gothic was originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for American Type Founders circa 1930.] This reinterpreted version is now known as Stenographer JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Spotlight was created by British designer Tony Geddes in the tradition of the bold serif fonts of early 19th century England. It too is a robust alphabet exhibiting extreme stroke contrasts, however, Geddes gave his font a more relaxed feel by not filling in the strokes completely. Long white rays break up the otherwise dark black strokes, following the form of the outer contours and giving the figures a three dimensional look. Spotlight is also reminiscent of the decorative advertisements of the 1930s and of the glamorous revues and shows of this time. Spotlight is perfect for headlines and display in larger point sizes.

MTT Roma is designed to re-create the atmosphere of the city of Rome of the 21st century. The studio for the letterform evolved from the Trajan Column alphabet. Suitable for both display and body-text usage, stylistically MTT Roma aims to distance itself from the proliferation of geometric sans-serif families of its time. The result is a sharp, subtly humanist typeface inspired by modern day Rome, the city of contrasts and eternal beauty. Cayuse is a super-slab, all-caps titling face that tips its hat to the classic French and Italian “fat face” serifs of the nineteenth century. Structurally, Cayuse utilizes a reverse-stress stroke configuration—with thick, meaty slab serifs and sinuous, spiked connecting strokes. This crackling contrast gives Cayuse a very black, dense texture, and the ability to combine and contrast well with other typefaces. Arm yourself with Cayuse to create richly-textured, high-impact typography for packaging, editorial, brand identity, posters, signage, and many other applications. The Flinscher family contains twenty display typefaces, in weights that vary from light to black, and widths that extend from condensed to expanded. Bougainville was inspired by many of my favorites and has been on the drawing board in excess of ten years. Only this year I decided to expand the original 1994 design to include other weight variants. The quirky Binner Gothic-inspired high axis and its funky g, rounded e, angled stroke endings together with the influence of contemporary designs such as Officina Sans, Din Mittelschrift and MetaPlus, Bougainville exhibits a similar flavor and compactness to Bodega Sans. This typeface family has been named in honor of the renowned eighteen-century French mathematician and explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville to whom we owe the naming of South Sea Islands and colorful tropical flora he discovered along his journey. Bougainville makes for effective headings at any size and is equally readable at semi-display sizes.

A typographic treasure, originated at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, had been brought back to life. With its charming touch it makes a wonderful font for poems, bookcovers, reprints and other historically relevant projects. To get access to all ligatures, it is recommended to activate both Standard and Discretionary Ligatures; the round s you find on the # key, and typing the combination N-o-period and activating the OT feature Ordinals gets you the numero sign.

I bought something online, but when I received it, it wasn’t exactly what I had hoped it would be. So I read the return policy and sent it back. And… came up with this font and its name in the process! Return Policy is a hand drawn slab serif, inspired by a bunch of slab serifs from the early 20th century. Return Policy has been given a ‘grunge’ overhaul, making it ideal for sturdy products, websites with an industrial look and manly posters.

Warrior is a chunky typeface design inspired by a Russian Egyptian-style block alphabet (original designer unknown). Mousse Script is based on Glenmoy, a 1932 Stephenson Blake typeface. Glenmoy a prime example of what display typography was in pre-WWII American ad art. It graced the pages of magazines, sold numerous products and services, then simply died out when the typographic trends shifted towards the more personalized, stylized and handwritten types of calligraphy. The current trend in typography is a revivalism that brings all of the distinctive display typography of the 20th century, without chronological discrimination, back in the name of ‘retro’. Who are we to deny the masses what they want? Mousse Script doesn’t just bring Glenmoy back from the ashes of the 20th century. It expands upon the limited metal character set nearly twice over and takes advantage of the latest type technologies. This makes Mousse Script a striking typeface, both functionally and visually. A simple, attractive display font on the surface, Mousse Script is unique in its bold upright calligraphy, something rarely found these days. The OpenType version of Mousse Script combines both the regular and alternate character sets into a single, cross-platform package that takes advantage of the extended typographic features of the OpenType format.
