But Hans van Maanen makes a fine attempt at just that by remodeling the traditional shapes through a modern lens with stunning results. Aragon is a workhorse family that performs very well in a variety of text sizes, from footnotes and legal copy to lengthy body sets. Mr Chips is a love letter to modern text serif families like Century Schoolbook and Scotch Romans of all kinds. There's nothing precious about Mr Chips. He's built sturdily, but with a less upright stance than his forebears, with a lower, more relaxed x-height. Mr Chips is dependable and true, with recognizable shapes that make him a pleasure to read. He's a Clarendon, but without the bulkiness that makes Clarendons difficult in text. Mr Chips has character sets for Western Europe, Cyrillic, and monotonic Greek. He has a full set of true small caps for versatility and hierarchy, and some fun and functional ligatures. His alternate characters include a one-story a and g in the upright versions, straight and curly Ka's and Zhe's in Cyrillic, and two styles of ampersand. He's an all around usable, agreeable guy! Mr Chips is a companion typeface to Miss McGee, also from The Ampersand Forest!

Mercado is a versatile stencil font family with 3 styles and 3 weights of each style. I was inspired by local boutique supermarkets to create a stencil font family with both upper and lowercase as well as a large international characterset. Mercado Regular can be used at small point sizes without the stencil gaps filling in. It also makes a bold statement when used large. Mercado Display with it's precision slices is best used large, or in any design solution where the tight gaps will not become filled in. Mercado Sans is a quirky and strong sans serif based on the bones of the stencil version.

In Northern Sumatra, the crystal clear waters of Lake Toba lap gently against the surrounding mountains. In the middle of the lake sits the island of Samosir, for centuries the secluded home of the Batak people. Visitors arrive by ferry into the tiny town of Tuk Tuk, escaping the heat and humidity of the Sumatran jungle. Throughout the village, restaurants and guest houses are adorned with hand-painted signs in bright colors. Perhaps due to Sumatra's long history of European colonization, the letterforms are reminiscent of those used for posters and handbills in America and Europe at the end of the 19th century, but with a distinctly Southeast Asian flavor. Charles Nix, intrigued by the combination of Victorian fancy and Batak arabesque, photographed, sketched and translated the letterforms into a design that is now ITC Batak. Named for the proud ancestors of Samosir's inhabitants, it is a bold condensed letter with hexagonal serifs - a sort of properly dressed grotesque. Batak is available in either Condensed or Condensed Bold.

Mayak is a geometric sans serif inspired by the Soviet constructivist fonts of the 1920s-1930s. It contains traditional upper and lower case characters as well as small caps and a great number of stylistic alternates. The font comes in 12 styles: 4 weights in 3 widths. Mayak was designed by Yana Nosenko with contributions from Dmitry Kirsanov and released by ParaType in 2017.

The design of P22 Foxtrot is inspired by the lively ballroom dance of the same name. Foxtrot is a transitional antiqua with rounded serifs that features ligatures, small caps, oldstyle numerals and full Central European support for those with applications that support OpenType features. The companion, Foxtrot Sans, is a sans serif version with a little more jazzy expression. Both fonts are great for text and display.

Slabton is a font family in the slab serif style. There are six defined weights, from thin to black, and six italic weights as well as a variable font. All latin small caps are integrated and the font contains a lot of useful open type features and options. Also, there is an additional shaded decor style for decorative matters and elements like headlines and initials.

My second font for 2009, Bling is a hoot. This vaguely Deco, sparkly sans is for those heads that need bling. This is the first font released in a long time without my complete feature set. It has lining and oldstyle figures, many wild ligatures, the x-height is too high to make a small caps set worth the effort. It's just for fun. Enjoy!

Constellation started with a simple geometric concept in the manner of Art Deco which gradually developed to a complete typeface, both upright and italic, total of seven weights. Skeleton Slab brings a new elegance to a classic form. I was thinking of calling it Ozymanidias, after Shelley’s poem, because it evokes memories of ancient runic inscriptions, but then I thought that was maybe a bit pretentious, and I decided I'd keep it simple and descriptive. Besides, I wasn't sure how to spell Ozymandias! Skeleton Slab has small caps in place of lower case.

Lisboa Hebrew is humanist sans-serif typeface base on the same design as the original Lisboa (2005). The main structure is more close to the Sephardic proportions, where the letterforms contains reverse contrast and the terminals following the same calligraphic approach (Humanist). There are some characters and figures designed as small caps which have the same proportions from Hebrew. Latin transliteration characters were also included.

Stratham is vigorous sans-serif inspired by the slab serif Clarendon. It is a heavy display face, and has a tangible modern British feel to it. The italic is especially dynamic and forward moving. Stratham includes OpenType titling and swash alternates, old style figures and small caps. Stratham is useful for headlines, highly legible signage or posters and works well in conjunction with the always popular Clarendon.

Twang is the work of British designer Timothy Donaldson, who says its appeal lies in its ugliness. Its irregular, craggy features give it an aggressive, eye-catching edge. The font comes wiht an extra set of small caps which add more zest to this cutting edge style. Twang is ideal for retail promotions and fashion-related publications as well as large poster and signage applications.

Insigne is pleased to release Nanumunga, inspired by the carefree antics of tropical fish. Designers will find this typeface is useful whenever a relaxed and lighthearted typeface is required. Nanumunga is a versatile face. The font includes small caps and a shadow alternate for titling. ITC Photoplay is another gem from Nick Curtis. Unearthed from the 1927 edition of Samuel Welo's Studio Handbook for Artists and Advertisers, the design's original suggested use was for title and caption cards for silent movies. A monoweight design that bridges the gap between turn-of-the-century decorative type and Art Deco, ITC Photoplay is both casual and stylish. And, yes, the cap S" is supposed to look that that. To expand this already handy typeface's versatility, a Black weight has been added to the original design. Curtis has also created an array of alternate characters, a couple of conjunctions, and a handful of "bishop's fingers" to help make your point. ITC Photoplay is eminently suitable for all those occasions when you need to say, "Unhand that fair damsel, you dastardly cad!", and really mean it."

Coal Brush is a bit of a misleading name. It looks as though it was made with a brush, but it was, in fact, made with a almost dried out old marker pen. But a font named ‘dried out old marker pen’ doesn’t really fly, so I decided to pimp the name. There you have it, you can’t even trust an honest typographer! Marker pen or brush, Coal Brush is a very sweet little font. It is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and can be mixed freely. Plus there’s a hidden stash of alternates for the lower case letters and an alternate ampersand! I actually threw that in to make up for my lie. So, use it for your books, your posters, your rap albums, rock operas, grilled food restaurants and designer BBQ sauces. It’s yours for the taking!

Kanjur was inspired by a page from an 18th century Buddhist book. Used for block text at first glance it has a very striking resemblance to Asian lettering. It is an English reading caps only font with minimal characters ( A-Z 0-9 & £ $ ¢ ! ? , . ). It is not intended as a serious font, just enjoy.

This is the one and only Neil Bold, designed by Wayne Stettler in 1966 and originally published as a Typositor typeface. An award-winner and instant celebrity upon its release, Neil Bold became synonymous with magnified modernism for a whole generation. It was a jazz record packaging favorite, especially at Blue Note records, and made regular appearances on science fiction book covers during the last stretch of the genre's golden age. This digital version greatly expands on the film type one. New small caps and biform styles were added to the authentically revived main face (for a set of three fonts), and language support has been extended to include all Latin-based tongues. Neil Bold Pro, the OpenType version, comes in a single font that combines all three fonts into a single file, with programmed features for small caps, stylistic alternates (for biform shapes), a few extra alternates, class-based kerning, and additional language support for Cyrillic and Greek scripts.

This 12-font family employs several unique features including a 2-part Chisel set which allows for the look of stone incised lettering. Hedonic has just a hint of a slab serif and even that is used so sparingly that it almost feels like a sans serif font. Its design does appear to be painfully simple but there are many interesting features including a selection of weights, small caps with old style numerals and display weights that make it very useful. And legible. Old style numerals are included with the small caps and italics. Also for display purposes are two "Chisel" fonts. Used together, set one on top of the other, they create a stylish 3D effect—ideal for logos and headlines or anything that needs a strong graphic punch. Hedonic may not be as eccentric as many fonts out there, but overall it is clean and legible with a few extra flourishes to stand out from the crowd!
