A debut from the most anticipated vintage digital typefoundry by Gilang Purnama and Ilham Herry, who stucked their mind, body and soul back into the first era of 18th century. Kornelis de Vries, a headmaster from the Dutch province of Friesland, cultivated new potato breeds that he named after pupils in his school. In the early 1900s he came up with the tasty Bintje (a Frisian girl’s name) and it became a big success – in Belgium and France it has remained the most popular potato for french fries to this day, more than a century since its introduction. Donald Roos took 10 kilos of fresh Bintje potatoes and cut the Bint typeface by hand with a short, sharp knife. He then inked each character once and printed it twice; the second, lighter printing is accommodated in the lower case alphabet. The Bint family offers a script to make the letters bounce up and down the baseline; with OpenType functionality the font randomly chooses each character from the upper- or lowercase alphabet. ‘Tabular lining figures’ will activate a series of negative numerals in boxes; ‘Discretionary ligatures’ activates specially designed letter combinations like ‘www’ as well as arrows and stars. Bint has a distinct, slightly rough handmade appearance, making it useful for a wide range of designs.

This family was inspired from the set of fontfaces used by Francisco Del Hierro, to print in 1726 the first Spanish language Dictionary from the Spanish Royal Academy (Real Academia Española, Diccionario de Autoridades). These two Transitional styles are said to have been the first set of official typeface in Spain, like the French “Reale” (take a look at our "[/fonts/glc/1790-royal-printing/ 1790 Royale Printing)". In our two styles (Regular & Italic), fontfaces, kernings and spaces are as closely as possible the same as in the original. OBO Classic is the second installment of the OBO series, a type collection based on a square. Every character is mapped on a 1x1 ratio which allows for horizontal and vertical settings alike. Or mixed, like crosswords. OBO Classic is a display interpretation of a traditional Old-style Serif. The “distortion” which maps each character to a square creates unusual proportions to what we are used to from classic serif typefaces. The result is a monospaced font. While each individual letter feels conventional on its own, when brought together in words the result feels contemporary. Thanks to the square base vertical and horizontal – and mixed – settings are possible and easy to apply. There are a few exceptions for certain punctuation and special characters that are half the width for better spacing; and the word space’s width can easily be adjusted through OpenType stylistic sets. Talking about spacing, for strictly horizontal typesetting there is the option to turn on kerning for a number of characters to create a cleaner texture across words and phrases. OBO Classic is best set in large sizes and is most comfortable in editorial and display settings. A series of icons complete the character set. A selection comes as pixel graphics which adds further contrast to the traditional legacy of the typeface.

Finura was inspired by American lettering from the 60s, specially the Stunt Roman for ruling pen and compass presented in the Speedball Textbook for Pen & Brush Lettering by Ross F. George, but also by looking carefully to University Roman characteristics. Finura is an experience on very thin poster typefaces and the possibilities to design extreme delicate typefaces, with plenty details, that sheer simplicity and readability to the classic forms.

Quidic is an unusual display typeface. The upper-case letters are strongly vertical, condensed, and bold. Used by themselves, they make headlines and titles that stand out. The lower case letters do not have serifs similar to those on the upper-case letters, but rather have the serif shapes one expects from an italic style. The lower-case is also quite short compared to the upper-case letters. The italic styles of the family are unusual because the lower-case letters keep their shapes and the upper-case letters and numbers change. The family has three styles that differ more by width rather than by weight. Although some Bauhaus fonts have several letter shapes that are similar, there is no other typeface quite like Quidic. Distinguishing characteristics of Frank Marciulano’s Linotype Automat™ are its strictly constructed basis and its uniquely placed stroke contrasts. The emphasized vertical strokes are reminiscent of bars and give text a static feel. The forms of the letters are distinctly modern, an interpretation of a typeface meant for machines. Automat is not recommended for text but is particularly good for headlines in large point sizes, which allow its unusual forms to really stand out.

Clunic is a Blackletter font in the best traditions of Victorian Gothic revival—that is to say aesthetically marvelous but no historical basis whatsoever. The design combines the perpendicular character of medieval manuscripts with modern legibility and a healthy respect for calligraphic principles. There are alternate large and small forms of some glyphs. Clunic is ideal for use on certificates, themed invitations, posters, headings, initial capitals or sign-writing with an historic theme.

Adso was born out of a research that studied the possibility of reintroducing Gothic writing in our contemporary world. Inspired by Textura, Adso was decidedly freed of all those little details that make Blackletter faces appear foreign or even displeasing to the contemporary reader’s eyes. Nevertheless, the basic features of Gothic color were preserved: verticality, modularity, and darkness. Adso is a gothic font for today’s age, highly readable and open to all fields of expression.

Fortezza is a family of fonts inspired by the great masters who have created the Modern Roman style: Firmin Didot (1764 -1836) and Giambattista Bodoni (1740 -1813) Both typefaces can be similar, but a trained and close vision, show clear differences in the final result, like its weight and the degree of transition of the strokes. The type of Didot suggests greater warmth and elegance, they are characterized by extreme contrast in thick strokes and thin strokes, by the use of serifs very thin and by the vertical stress of the letters. while the Bodoni type conveys a greater robustness and hardness. Fortezza brings together the elegance and spirit of both types, but proposes a contemporary vision, establishing a distance with certain features typical of the baroque that was manifested at that time.

This font has that grungy, gritty look, and combines it with some elegant swirls. Weird and wonderful. I have added swirls and decorations to ALL the uppercase letters that did not have them, so there are now wider possibilities to add interesting decorations to your composition. A crumpet is a small griddle bread, mostly enjoyed in the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand. I have never had one, but I have heard of them and I like the name - which is probably Welsh in origin. Lemony Crumpet is a whimsical, handmade font. It is tall & thin, shaky and jumpy and I wouldn’t use it as a poster font because of its delicate properties, but it would look fantastic on book covers, product packaging and websites. Frakto is a two-weight family of calligraphic Fraktur-style typefaces designed by Julius de Goede. One of the main categories of Blackletter typefaces, Fraktur was developed around 1517, and was used throughout Germany and Northern Europe well into the 20th century. With Frakto, Julius de Goede has re-applied the written element of the script back into the Fraktur style, rejuvenating and reinvigorating it for 21st century display use. Frakto is the perfect fit for certificates and newsletter headlines. We recommended using it in point sizes from 12-pt on up.

Kantor's modular stroke and humanist axis defines it as an old-style 15th century Venetian serif typeface. At the same time, the lowercase Kantor alphabet is relatively compressed and has the vertical stems of a textura blackletter. However, Kantor has distinct, penformed shapes and has also kept all the organic irregularities of traditional handwriting (or punch-cutting, as it were). Kantor is not happy, not sad - but calm and dignified. Perfect for buddhist poems, fantasy video games and antique scrolls to give that "long time ago"-feeling.

Milescut is a display typeface inspired by some seminal covers the graphic designer and photographer Reid Miles created for the Blue Note Records between the 1950s and 1960s. Miles made almost 500 covers for Blue Note in this period, including some using the hand-cut technique that consists basically in doing vertical cuts in capital letters and numerals to create a unique style within the universe he created for Blue Note. Milescut is a tribute to this small “cut” 😬 in his trajectory within the greatest record label of all time. This idea came about while I was working on what will become soon a revival of a wood type that I fell in love with when flipping through a Specimen of the MACHINE CUT WOOD TYPE manufactured by The WM. H. Page Wood Type Co. Milescut has two extra sets of alternates that work cyclically when activated in your OpenType menu and lots of ligatures, pretty cool :)

Monotype Hei3 HK is a modulated and transitional Chinese design with structure, diǎn, piē and nà carry Song style, while horizontal & vertical strokes are relatively simple. This mix of ancient and modern elements with low contrast is something that you can find in wood carving: rigid while balanced with softness.

It was my first attempt to drawing a Hebrew alphabet to mach directly with other typeface (Latin) which I already designed. The Latin version is an handwriting display typeface influenced by chancery handwriting from the Italian Renaissance (broad-nib pen). One of the most typographic characteristic is there wavy forms, especially the serifs, where contains some of the main calligraphic references from this font family. The Hebrew script contain reverse contrast, the vertical proportions are more tall and the stroke weight is slightly more strong than latin lowercase to produce a correct visual balance between them, especially on small sizes (text proportions). This Hebrew square book-hand was influenced by Sephardic script style. The Latin characters contains interrupted strokes, the same was made for Hebrew letterforms to transpose correctly the same calligraphic approach between these two different alphabets.

Turer is a display font with a strong artistic personality. It is inspired by some works of Rudolph Koch (1876 - 1934) such as Wallau, Original Neuland or Koch Antiqua. It is characterised by its vertical strokes that thicken towards the ends, which hints at a serif without actually having it. Turer is composed of capitals; the lower case being small caps. It also has a great set of ligatures. Presented in two weight: Regular and Bold.

Mountain is a digital revival and extension of Teutonia, an old metal typeface released by the Roos & Junge type foundry (Offenbach am Main, Germany) in 1902. Teutonia’s design was popular during both the Art Nouveau and the Constructivist eras, where similar letterforms could be seen as far away as the Soviet Union. Although it slipped under the radar during the 1930s and 40s, this style feels extremely contemporary today. Mountain’s underlying geometric feeling is reminiscent of pixels and grids, suiting it for application with music and art, as well as history. Yet this typeface is not as static as it seems at first glance; playful diagonals—like those seen on the capitals D, L, P, and W—enliven the otherwise stern horizontal and vertical motion. Teutonia was a simple upper and lowercase display type. Mountain adds upon these by adding small caps and obliqued italic companions, rounding out this typographic toolkit.

Trajan The original template for this one-weight, all-caps font was the inscription on Trajan’s Column, carved in AD 113 to celebrate the emperor Trajan’s victory in the Dacian Wars. College student Jason Smith copied the stone lettering from the cast on display in London’s Victoria & Albert Museum. In Roman times, the signmaker would paint letters onto stone with a wide brush for the stone mason to chisel out later. The signwriter would end each stroke with a flick of his brush, which the mason would also carve into the stone. Ecce (as they would have said in Rome): the serif was born. Hand-crafted “I first drew this typeface when I was 17,” says Jason. “I drew it with a very sharp 9H pencil on polydraw film. “Then, using a Rotring pen, I inked the letters in and scraped back the serifs so they were perfectly sharp. These letters were then reduced on a PMT camera. I’d designed my first typeface, although it wasn’t digitised till much later.” Digitised Years after Jason had drawn the original typeface, its transfer into digital form made further refinements necessary. The serifs and weights needed thickening slightly, creating a crisp, new version whose delicate elegance is best appreciated in larger sizes. A classically-inspired font, timeless and perfectly-proportioned, to reflect the refinement of premium brands.

Hipster Script is another of my habitual attempts at trying to reduce the divide between manual and digital. In this case, I try to articulate brush lettering, try to get the computer to emulate continuous painting. The process wasn't that different from my work with Feel Script's shot at computerized commercial lettering, though here we have a more casual contrast, rather than the high seriousness of the Copperplate script. Swashes, alternates, ligatures — too many of them, all trying to make the interplay between the tool’s two extreme widths remain faithful to hand movement subtleties. I also toyed with ligatures containing apostrophes, something I've never seen before. With this typeface I think I've become more balanced in uniting the spontaneity of post-war ad lettering with the current trends in illustration and design. Hipster Script received a Judge’s choice Certificate of Excellence at the Type Directors of New York and was selected to be part of the Bienal Tipos Latinos 2012.
