A vintage set of die-cut letters and number by Village Toys (circa 1930s or 1940s) featured a playful, bold serif typeface. This is now available digitally as Toy Letters JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

The thin and stylish Art Deco lettering of a neon sign above the Greyhound bus terminal entrance in a 1930s New York City photo inspired Transit Station JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Common Stencil JNL takes a vintage lettering stencil from the 1980s with imperfectly bent cutting dies [which unintentionally gave the characters a distressed or "grunge" look] and recreates it in a digital form. The design is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster from the 1940s saying "Behind the Headlines" presented the title hand-lettered in a bold, condensed slab serif. This became the model for Newsmaker JNL, available in both regular and oblique versions.

A poster for the 1932 film “Shanghai Express” starring Marlene Dietrich has the films name is a semi-Asian lettering style. This bold poster font is now available as Asian Railway JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

A WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster for the Rural Electrification Administration’s promoting of running water for rural areas is the basis for Tap Water JNL. A condensed slab serif, it is available in both regular and oblique versions.

As the name suggests, Basik is a simple, clean and versatile sans-serif typeface designed by Superfried. It is equally apt in both body and display scenarios. Around 1931, the Los Angeles Times (in partnership with the Richfield Oil Company) installed on its building a moving message board similar to the one at the New York Times in New York City which they dubbed an “electric newspaper”. The style of characters used on this electronic sign were the basis for the namesake font Electric Newspaper JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. A blank space to place between words is available on both the solid bar and broken bar keystrokes.

The box cover of “Drawing Stencils No. 3 for Use on Slate or Paper” [a children’s drawing set produced by Montgomery, Ward & Company of Chicago circa the 1890s] had its title in an elegant spurred Roman type face. Working from the few letters available, a complete character set was created that resulted in Antique Packaging JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. This cowboy boot style is an old Speedball favorite originated by lettering artist Ross F. George. It’s especially useful for creating distinctive headlines and titles where a Tuscan look is desired.
