Linotype Compendio is a part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the contestants of the International Digital Type Design Contests from 1994 and 1997. Christian Bauer designed this font based on the basic forms of Transitional faces of the 17th century. The outer contours of the letters are purposely raw and irregular, much like alphabets printed on low-quality paper. The legibility of the font is thus reduced, making it necessary to use this font only for shorter texts or headlines, but it is exactly this characteristic which lends Linotype Compendio its distinctiveness.

Linotype Clascon is part of the Take Type Library, which features winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. Designed by the British artist Rachel Godfrey, the constructed forms of the capitals are reminiscent of sketches of many famous 16th century artists, Albrecht Dürer and Nicolas Jaugeon among them. This style emphasizes the mathematic construction of the letters, based on the circle, rectangle and triangle, but Clascon’s historical roots lie in Transitional and Modern Face styles. This font is particularly suited to very short texts, headlines and initials.

This fun font was designed by Polish artist Dariusz Nowak-Nova and each letter seems to be a work in itself. The fine hair lines are decorated with tiny squares and look like wires with nodes while the thicker strokes have indefinite contours and seem to have been made with a thick brush. German artist Verena Gerlach created a typeface which looks almost like Arabic at the first glance, only with the second do the familiar forms become clear. Rounded lower case letters, generous, sweeping capitals and diamond-shaped ornaments give the font its Arabic feel. The exotic Linotype Pide Nashi is best suited for short and middle length texts and headlines and especially for ornamental texts.

Amongst a batch of antique sheet musical instruction booklets offered for sale online was a piece with Art Nouveau hand lettering on the cover entitled “Seven Musical Travelogues for Piano”. This design served as the inspiration and model for Ragtime Gal JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The font’s name comes from the line ‘Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal…’ from the 1899 song “Hello Ma Baby”; a tune that found a new burst of popularity in an odd way within a 1955 Warner Brother’s cartoon [“One Froggy Evening”].
