SPQR Senatus Populusque Romanus or The Senate and People of Rome as quoted by the likes of Marcus Tullius Cicero or Tully to his friends and Titus Livius otherwise known as Livy. SPQR appeared on battle standards carried by Roman troops and no doubt can still be seen chiseled into stone facades across the old empire of the ancient Romans. This evokes visions of stonemasons delicately inscribing messages that were meant to endure, one which can still be seen on the Trajan column circa 114AD. FF Bauer Grotesk is a revival of the metal type Friedrich Bauer Grotesk, released between 1933 and 1934 by the foundry Trennert & Sohn in Hamburg Altona, Germany. The geometric construction of the typeface, infused with the art déco zeitgeist of that era, is closely related to such famous German designs as Futura, Erbar, Kabel and Super Grotesk that debuted a few years earlier. However, Bauer Grotesk stands out for not being so dogmatic with the geometry, lending the design a warmer, more homogenous feeling. The oval “O” is a good example of that, as well as characteristic shapes like the capital M or the unconventionally differing endings of “c” and “s” which make for a less constructed look. I've started looking at classic serifs with a narrow 80's & 90's range, and wanted to make the perfect one for you too! VONESA Minimalist is a beautiful nostalgic upper and lower case typography that looks amazing in upper and lower case settings as Display, Logo and body text. One thing to note about VONESA Minimalist is that the letter spacing is intentionally set for clean readability if you want to use it for body types, so I recommend setting the spacing a bit tighter for display use (around -20 to -40 should be!).
