The redefinition of a classic In the 1920s the Viennese government decided to standardize the street signs across the city. A typeface was especially constructed for the purpose. It was available in a Heavy and a Bold Condensed version, to support short street names as well as longer ones. As the years went by, the typeface was adopted and redrawn by several enamel factories. These adaptations lead to variations on the design, and to the fact that there isn’t a Viennese street sign font but 16 – in part severely – different versions. Henriette is not a digitization of any of those versions; rather, it is influenced by all of them. The italic versions are completely original and designed to accompany the Roman.

Think of Garamouche as Garamond's drunken cousin. This font replicates a long lost document ravaged by time and the elements (with a little sloppy printing for good measure.) My youngest son Boris has his birthday in a week. He turns 8, and he loves to play with those Danish building blocks - you know what I’m talking about. Last year he developed an interest in Star Wars n(no idea how that came to be), so we bought him some Star Wars-themed blocks for his birthday. I am now watching the movies with him and it is fun to witness his enthusiasm. The only drawback is the fact that we now seem to have a Chewbacca in our home… Meowtant Kittens is a font I drew with a fineliner and then digitised. Of course the name was influenced by the movies I am watching with Boris, even though they don’t feature any Meowtant Kittens.

It took me a long time, but I think I now understand why people of my generation and older feel the need to frame current events in an historical context or precedents, while most of the young couldn't care less about what happened ten years ago, let alone centuries back. After living for a few decades, you get to a point when time seems to be moving quite fast, and it’s humbling to see that your entire existence so far can be summed up in a paragraph or two which may or may not be useful to whoever ends up reading the stuff anyhow. I suppose one way to cope with the serenity of aging is trying to convince yourself that your life and work are really an extension of millenia of a species striving to accept, adapt to, and improve the human condition through advancing the many facets of civilization -- basically making things more understandable and comfortable for ourselves and each other while we go about doing whatever it is we are trying to do. And when you do finally convince yourself of that, history becomes a source of much solace and even a little premonition, so you end up spending more time there. Going far back into the history of what I do, one can easily see that for the most part it was ruled by the quill. Western civilization’s writing was done with quill pens for more than thirteen centuries and with newer instruments for about two. By the mid-18th century, the height of the quill experience, various calligraphy techniques could be discerned and writing styles were arranged in distinct categories. There are many old books that showcase the history of it all. I recommend looking at some whenever the urge comes calling and you have to get away from backlit worlds. Multiple sources usually help me get a better perspective on the range of a specific script genre, so many books served as reference to this quill font of mine. Late 17th century French and Spanish professional calligraphy guides were great aides in understanding the ornamental scope of what the scribes were doing back then. The French books, with their showings of the Ronde, Bâtarde and Coulée alphabets, were the ones I referenced the most. So I decided to name the font Auberge, a French word for hotel or inn, because I really felt like a guest in different French locales (and times) when I going through all that stuff. Because it is multi-sourced, Auberge does not strictly fit in a distinct quill pen category. Instead, it shows strong hints of both Bâtarde and Coulée alphabets. And like most of my fonts, it is an exercise in going overboard with alternates, swashes, and ornamental devices. Having worked with it for a while, I find it most suitable for display calligraphic setting in general, but it works especially well for things like wine labels and event invitations. It also shines in the original quill pen application purpose, which of course was stationery. Also, as it just occurred to me, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to describe your entire life in 50 words or less, you may as well make it look good and swashy, so Auberge would probably be a good fit there as well. This is one quill script that no large bird had to die for. A few technical notes The Auberge Script Pro version includes 1800 glyphs, everything is included there. Also latin language support. We recommend you to use the latest design application to have full access to alternates, swashes, small caps, ornaments, etc. The images from the gallery uses this version. For better results use the fonts with “liga” feature on. Awards During 2014 the early develop of Auberge Script was chosen to be part of Tipos Latinos, the most important type exhibition in South America.

Adi Stern’s Noam Text shows that typographic progress is often in the small things — in the perfecting of familiar traditions and in staying loyal to the spirit of what came before. It can’t really be called progress unless it honours its history. In this way, TypeTogether is happy to introduce Noam Text: A Hebrew and Latin serif font that builds on its heritage with the twin tools of honour and progress. Since 1908, the Frank-Rühl fonts have dominated the Hebrew book and newspaper market. Noam Text’s design goal was to create a coherent family with both Latin and Hebrew serif text typefaces, each authentic to its own script, and which would serve as an alternative to last century’s predecessor. In short order, users will recognise Noam Text as a source of progress in its bilingual abilities. Hebrew and Latin have opposite reading directions, creating many issues: opposing directionality of the open counters; vertical stress in Latin, but horizontal in Hebrew; fewer extenders in Hebrew; and no Hebrew capital letters. Oxford Street is a signage font that began as a redrawing of the capital letters used for street nameplates in the borough of Westminster in Central London. The nameplates were designed in 1967 by the Design Research Unit using custom lettering based on Adrian Frutiger’s Univers typeface, a curious combination of Univers 69 Bold Ultra Condensed, a weight that doesn’t seem to exist but which would flatten the long curves of glyphs such as O, C and D, and Universe 67 Bold Condensed with its more rounded lobes on glyphs like B, P and R. Letters were then remodelled to improve their use on street signs. Thin strokes like the inner diagonals of M and N were thickened to create a more monolinear alphabet; the high interior apexes were lowered and the wide joins thinned. The crossbar of the A was lowered, the K was made double junction, and the tail of the Q was given a baseline curve. K-Type Oxford Street continues the process of impertinent improvement and includes myriad minor adjustments and several more conspicuous amendments. The stroke junctions of M and N are further narrowed and their interior apexes modified. The middle apex of the W is narrowed and the glyph is a little more condensed. The C and S are drawn more open, terminals slightly shortened. The K-Type font adds a new lowercase which is also made more monolinear so better suited to signage, loosely based on Univers but also taking inspiration from the Transport typeface both in a taller x-height and character formation. The lowercase L has a curled foot, the k is double junctioned to match the uppercase, and terminals of a, c, e, g and s are drawn shorter for openness and clarity. A full repertoire of Latin Extended-A characters features low-rise diacritics that keep congestion to a minimum in multiple lines of text. The font tips the hat to signage history by including stylistic alternates for M, W and w that have the pointed middles of the earlier MOT street sign typeface. Incidentally, Alistair Hall (‘London Street Signs’, Batsford, 2020) notes that when the manufacturer of signs was changed in 2007, Helvetica Bold Condensed was substituted in place of the custom design, “an unfortunate case of an off-the-peg suit replacing a tailored one” and a blunder that has happily since been rectified, though offending nameplates can still be spotted by discerning font fans.

Stobart is a script font based on the characters written in a letter by Mr Henry Stobart, dated 1899. It contains over 1200 individual glyphs, supports the extended latin character set and includes a total of 8 different alphabet sets to make up the extensive OpenType contextual substitution needed to make the font appear as genuinely handwritten as possible. Controlled casualness is the watchword in this new handwriting script from the prolific young French designer Éric de Berranger, who also designed the sans serif type family ITC Octone. ITC Berranger Hand has its roots in chancery calligraphy, yet its surface looks like contemporary informal lettering that was written quickly with a felt-tip pen on slightly absorbent paper. The counters of some letters appear to almost fill in from ink spread, yet Berranger Hand is admirably readable at small sizes. The capital letters are restrained, without swashes, so they can be used together in all-caps combinations.

Gobble gobble gobble! The Gobbler font was drawn with a leaky pen on a napkin at the Modern Cafe in Northeast Minneapolis while the designer, Mister Chank Diesel, was waiting for some pot roast. “Apple cobbler drippings on the napkin add more character to the strokes of each letter,” says Chank. This font was originally named Modern Napkin, a free font released in 1997. Chank completed the character set, fixed some curves, and cleaned up some of the apple cobbler to make a more elegant font in 1999. Gobbler works great for either text or display purposes.

The rounded Sans with edges. Olivia Sans got curves on the outlines and edges on the inlines. So it can be very legible and space efficient at the same time: the curves keep the distinctions between the letters, the corners keep the influences from broadnibbed pens with a subtle horizontal stress for great legibility. Olivia has personality without being obtrusive. Three weights (light, regular, bold) are equipped with real italics, SmallCaps, different sets of figures, accents for almost every latin script, arrows, symbols. A fourth weight (black) comes without italics or SmallCaps, but all the other features. Olivia: with or without.

AEONUS is a gothic font, an attempt to combine a wide-edged and pointed pen, while giving the font a readability that many gothic fonts lack. Angular shapes made strictly in 45 degrees and straight lines give the font a touch of futurism. A gothic, futuristic font that retains readability and makes a unique impression is the goal that was followed when creating the font. Aeonus also conveys the spirit of the occult and something dark. Aeonus is good for prints on clothes, posters, packaging, tattoo, merchandising, large headlines, logos, product design, and any other large font compositions.

The new Declaration font set from P22 features two lettering fonts based on the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. A script font that features the look of classic 18th Century penmanship, with a slightly irregular edge, as found on documents made with ink quill pens on vellum or parchment. The accompanying Blackletter font is also derived from the Declaration of Independence as it was used for emphasis and of course the famous document title itself. A third font, which features the signatures of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is also included.

Kaleidos Rough lining is a brush script. It has two versions; Kaleidos Rough and Kaleidos Textured. The rough version has rough edges to mimic authentic brush strokes. The textured version also has those rough edges and in addition it has a brush stroke texture to mimic dry ink. Both versions are sketched and drawn with a pointed brush pen. Kaleidos Rough has plenty of alternates, ligatures and swashes so you can build interesting-looking words and headlines. Although Kaleidos Rough is condensed and quite tightly spaced it is clear and legible. Also check out Kaleidos Smooth, a clean and smooth version of Kaleidos.

Based on lettering with a sharp pen, Gangfield features a rather solid character and a measured rhythm. This is named after my nephew who has an optimistic and disciplined style. Gangfield is available in upright variants, with regular, italic and bold weights. Gangfield's bright and cheerful energy shines through either in the form of short blocks of text, or enhanced on display sizes with over 1,100 wildcards and swashes that vary in size and complexity. As the basis for this new font artist and designer Lena Schmidt used an old font design by her mother Jutta. At a young age, her mother drew and illustrated a lot with pen and ink. She made beautiful illustrations and many font designs. Schmidt chose one of these drafts - delicately drawn Donovan lyrics - as the basis for this digital handwritten stencil font. I have been to Japan many times, but I have to admit that I have not (yet) been to Odaiba, so this font is a reminder that I should go there one day. Odaiba is a large artificial Island in the bay of Tokyo. It is a popular shopping and sightseeing destination and its sights include a copy of the Statue of Liberty and a mega-sized Gundam Robot. Odaiba Script is a handwritten font. I used a Sharpie pen on paper, so it is nice and thick. It comes with double letter ligatures and all diacritics.

Basically, Kalli Hand is a fast dry handwritten script, with a naturally pen-lettered look. Default character set contains most of Latin Pro accent letters and Serbian Cyrillic characters. Kalli Hand comes with a complete set of lowercase and uppercase OpenType Contextual Alternates, that includes all diacritic (accent) letters and Russian Cyrillic (instead of Serbian). For more authentic custom-feel text, there are Stylistic Alternates (with a few bonus ornaments), Standard and Discretionary Ligatures. Through an intelligent ligatures system we could design a typeface that imitates the strokes of a round brush pen and generates a flowing and organized writing. This typefamily has an extended characters set to support the languages in central and east Europe, as well as the ones used in west Europe. The Declaration of Independence was authored by Thomas Jefferson, but his is not the classic handwriting on the engrossed copies familiar to most Americans.
