Chinoise, a CastleType original, is based on hand lettering that is reminiscent of a style of ancient Chinese square-cut ideograms (perhaps cut in wood), and therefore the suggestive name "Chinoise" for this new design. There are alternate forms for each letter in the lowercase. Although square-cut, all corners of the letters are slightly rounded to give a more organic, weather-worn look. JY Décennie has been designed for both the web and print. OBO Classic is the second installment of the OBO series, a type collection based on a square. Every character is mapped on a 1x1 ratio which allows for horizontal and vertical settings alike. Or mixed, like crosswords. OBO Classic is a display interpretation of a traditional Old-style Serif. The “distortion” which maps each character to a square creates unusual proportions to what we are used to from classic serif typefaces. The result is a monospaced font. While each individual letter feels conventional on its own, when brought together in words the result feels contemporary. Thanks to the square base vertical and horizontal – and mixed – settings are possible and easy to apply. There are a few exceptions for certain punctuation and special characters that are half the width for better spacing; and the word space’s width can easily be adjusted through OpenType stylistic sets. Pantoufle is French for slipper. Not the flipflop variety (or thongs if you’re from Australia), but the one you wear indoors when it’s cold. I have some too; Spanish ones, made from recycled PET bottles. Here in Holland, we call them ‘Pantoffels’ and you don’t have to be a language expert to see the resemblance between the French and the Dutch word. That is because the French are probably more savvy when it comes to keeping your feet warm and the Dutch just borrowed the word, pronunciation and all! Pantoufle is a font I made with a big fat marker pen. My kids had used it to decorate some gifts for Sinterklaas (if you want to know what Sinterklaas is, look it up). Kettering 205 is a geometric slab-serif with Art Deco influences, such as lowered crossbars on many characters, and a crossed W. It includes old style non-aligning (lower case) numbers, both proportional and tabular as well as accented characters for Central European languages. It’s a highly individual looking font, but retains good legibility coupled with striking looks as a display font. The Kettering 205 family comprises of six weights and is closely related to Kettering 105, its less Deco flavoured cousin.

This typeface was drawn to create short headlines (quickly) for one of my projects (a set of illustrations featuring The Evil Rat, imagined character). Each character (here I mean "glyph") has it's own personality, mostly evil one (jokingly) — that is why the font is called "The Monsters". The font was drawn on paper, then scanned and traced. It has both Latin and Cyrillic sets, since it was used with both. Monsters are good for short notes of comic or ironic style.
