Churchward Typestyle is a clean sans serif font, originally designed as a photo font by Joseph Churchward back in 2002. Under exclusive license, BluHead Studio has digitized this typeface by using his original drawings. We added any missing glyphs, being careful to maintain the aesthetic that makes this a classic Churchward design. Joseph intended this to be a six weight family, so we digitized the Light and Ultra Bold weights and interpolated the middle four. We enhanced the functionality of the family by creating a complimentary set of small caps, as well as creating a 10 degree oblique of each weight, being careful to correct the slanted curve forms of the letters. Churchward Typestyle is now an extensive 12 weight family, ranging in weights from Light to Ultra Bold, making it extremely useful in a broad range of design applications, from text and print, to display, posters and billboards. It’s sanserif design is clean and open, with a few of those characteristic Churchward goodies. Joseph loved his ink traps, so look for many of those! Eclectic FS Siena is a typeface with history, and not just in the sense of having its origins in classical Roman lettering. Fontsmith founder Jason Smith first committed it to tracing paper while still at college, instinctively redrawing letterforms based on Hermann Zapf’s Optima according to ‘what felt right’. When Krista Radoeva took up the challenge to edit and extend the typeface, she and Jason were determined to preserve its subtly nonconformist and eclectic spirit. Like a great dish, there are individual components throughout the character set that all add flavour, and need to be balanced in order to work together. The smooth connection of the ‘h’ ‘m’ ‘n’ and ‘r’ contrasts with the corners of the ‘b’ and ‘p’. The instantly recognisable double-storey ‘a’ – the starting point of the design – contrasts with the single-storey ‘g’ and the more cursive ‘y’. And only certain characters – ‘k’, ‘w’, ‘v’ and ‘x’ in the lowercase and ‘K’, ‘V’, ‘W’, ‘X’ and ‘Y’ in the caps – have curved strokes. Transitional FS Siena is a contrasted sans-serif typeface, blending classical elegance and modern simplicity. Its construction and proportions are descended from classical broad-nib calligraphy and humanist typefaces, with a high contrast between the thick and thin strokes. The angle of the contrast, though, is vertical, more in the character of pointed-nib calligraphy and modernist typefaces. This vertical stress helps to give FS Siena a strong, cultured presence on the page. Idiosyncratic italics The italics for FS Siena were developed by Krista to complement the roman upper and lower-case alphabets first drawn by Jason. Many of the letterforms are built differently to their roman counterparts: there’s a single-tier ‘a’, a looped ‘k’ and connections more towards the middle of stems, such as in the ‘m’, ‘n’ and ‘u’. These distinctions, along with generally much narrower forms than the roman, give the italics extra emphasis within body copy, where the two are side-by-side. In editorial, especially, the combination can be powerful. To cap it all… In his original draft of the typeface, Jason found inspiration in Roman square capitals of the kind most famously found on Trajan’s Column in Rome. In keeping with those ancient inscriptions, he intended the capitals of FS Siena to also work in all-upper-case text, in logotypes for luxury consumer brands and property developments, for example. A little added space between the upper-case letters lets the capitals maintain their poise in a caps-only setting, while still allowing them to work alongside the lower-case letterforms. The caps-only setting also triggers a feature called case punctuation, which adapts hyphens, brackets and other punctuation to complement the all-caps text.

Gorodets is a symbol font based on traditional wood-painting style from the town Gorodets on Volga river, Russia. The main motifs of it are decorative flowers, birds, horses and even people, drawn in special way and painted in black, red, blue and green. The Gorodets typeface consists of 60 manually traced images divided into two parts: filled and empty ones. Lewis F. Day, in his Alphabets Old and New, presented these letters as examples of rustic Roman lettering of the first through third centuries, AD. An uppercase-only typeface, most of the lowercase positions are occupied by letterform variants. It should be noted that the name does not refer to a savory dish made from a nocturnal American marsupial; it’s Latin for “I can dance”. History is always in sight; it is constantly being reconsidered and reformulated in the context of now. We see approaches to art, fashion, textiles, homewares, furnishings … not to mention music, graphics and everything else that culturally enriches our daily lives, revisited and made anew for today.    Address Sans indulges in the spirit and aesthetics of mid-century Modern – Italian industrial design, sleek coffee makers, stylish cars, seductive jazz pressed on vinyl – with a charm and charisma that defies time. It evokes history but is decisively created for today.    Its design, in reality, is rooted in the condensed structure and block modulation of early 1950s German lettering intended for use in street signage, but when we started to work on the various weights and widths, the result was a set of fonts in a style similar to the typographic work developed by Butti and Novarese in the 60s. The multitude of potential applications for Address Sans then became clear.    In a range of 3 widths and 8 weights each, Address Sans includes little verses, true italics, small caps and numerous alternative signs for a total of 48 fonts. The result is a functional typeface that is effortlessly seductive, with geometric features and design details that ooze cool, and take it away from mere reinterpretation towards typographic forms that adapt perfectly for contemporary use.

Quayside is a deliciously thick and bulbous baseball script, with a wealth of OpenType features. Features include: Contextual alternates - I would suggest having these on by default; they make letters connect more smoothly (uppercase letters like M and H, which are normally non-connecting for all-caps purposes, connect to lowercase letters. The swash variant of J, and all o and b characters connect to any e character at a lower junction for a smoother join). Contextual alternates also make sure special end-forms of lowercase letters are used at the ends of words. Ligatures - A nice collection of useful ligatures which make the text flow smoother. Swash - Gives you more exuberant capitals. Not recommended for all-caps usage! The swash function also gives a variation of the ampersand and turns # into a nice numero symbol. Oldstyle Figures - lining figures are default but with the flick of a switch in OpenType savvy applications, you get expressive oldstyle figures. Quayside is a versatile typeface. Depending on the mood you're after, it can easily be retro or modern, fun or (fairly) serious. I'm often pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of uses my fonts get put to, and I can't wait to see what you do with this one!
