We challenged ourselves to reinterpret these characteristics, without losing expressiveness, in order to create a functional and versatile design. This process resulted in a font with display features, well-suited for light, uniform-coloured texts. Festival Script is a logical evolution within the deco script territory previously explored by Koziupa and Paul in efforts like Aranjuez, Bellas Artes, Heraldica and Tanguera. In Festival Script, strong bilinear contrast and ornamental swashes combine to convey a sense of modern luxury. This combination echoes the current trend in consumer goods of elevating simple, everyday products to objects of desire. Festival’s basic structure is the familiar Koziupa aesthetic of tapering stems and sharp endings, but this time informed by a more geometric sensibility. A wide variety of thin, ribbonlike strokes add a beautifully ornamental feel, evoking Argentine “filete” motifs. Almost every letterform includes multiple alternates, providing design possibilities from minimal to exuberant. In the early days of printing it was soon recognized that there was a need to identify the printer and publisher behind the printed work. So these industrious people created marks to identify themselves to clients. This font contains over 160 marks dating back to the early years of printing with the likes of Fust, Ratdolt, Manutius, Caxton, and a whole host of others represented. Some of these printers were very influential and altered the course of history, some merely enabled the broader public to access the classics. Some were imprisoned and others helped foment revolutions. Vinque is an interpretation of a nineteenth century Arts & Crafts revival of medieval lettering. British type designer William Morris completed Troy in 1891—a splendid blackletter typeface in the medieval style. It’s beautiful but some modern uses like UI and video game text require a less ornate gothic appearance. Vinque is simple. It avoids strong vertical blackletter strokes which can present problems for contemporary readers. The end result is an uncomplicated, crisp typeface that successfully conveys medievalness to the reader. Vinque was released in 2002 in one style: Regular.
