Last year I walked half of Offa’s Dyke path, a long distance trail on the Welsh/English border. Walking the trail, I came across a beautiful stretch of forest with a lovely name: Cadora Woods. Cadora Woods font was made with a Japanese brush pen. It sort of looks medieval and a friend of mine suggested it would be the font of choice for maps of ‘The Shire’. I guess that is true, but I am convinced you can come up with some innovative uses for this font!

Big Display Sans JNL is an all-caps version of Ludlow’s metal type “Samson”, originally designed by Robert Hunter Middleton in 1940. This digital version is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This is the one and only Neil Bold, designed by Wayne Stettler in 1966 and originally published as a Typositor typeface. An award-winner and instant celebrity upon its release, Neil Bold became synonymous with magnified modernism for a whole generation. It was a jazz record packaging favorite, especially at Blue Note records, and made regular appearances on science fiction book covers during the last stretch of the genre's golden age. This digital version greatly expands on the film type one. New small caps and biform styles were added to the authentically revived main face (for a set of three fonts), and language support has been extended to include all Latin-based tongues. Humanist on one hand, geometric wannabe on the other Born from the need of having a custom font for our own branding, Redonda became too big to keep just for us. Like that, came to light Plau's 10th retail font, the first one designed by Carlos Mignot. The font's personality is a result of a search for extreme impact. Having started out as a exclusively Black geometric face, it became a full, versatile humanist sans. While it maintains the impact that inspired it, it also offers performance for both UI and body copy. This balance reflects the font's creative process: at first it referenced historic examples, but we also made sure it worked as a contemporary face.

Morris Fuller Benton designed the serifed Clearface typeface for ATF in 1907. He liked the design so much that he also created a flare-serif variation, Clearface Gothic, soon after. It is a great typeface for headlines. SoftMaker created an updated version, Cleargothic Pro, in 2012. SoftMaker’s Cleargothic Pro typeface family contains OpenType layout tables for sophisticated typography. It also comes with a huge character set that covers not only Western European languages, but also includes Central European, Baltic, Croatian, Slovene, Romanian, and Turkish characters. Case-sensitive punctuation signs for all-caps titles are included as well as many fractions, an extensive set of ligatures, and separate sets of tabular and proportional digits.

The tale of Pumpkinseed began with a bit of hand-printing I noticed on the dinner menu at a local restaurant. I took a menu home for future reference. Several months later, some similar hand-lettering on another dinner menu caught my eye. I became a sort of connoisseur of hand-done menu lettering. After tweaking and adjusting a few of these menu-inspired (uppercase) characters, I placed them -- along with some other designs -- in an online Type in Progress survey. They won. So I finished the caps, drew out the lower case from scratch, created three weights and oblique styles. The result: Pumpkinseed, a full-featured casual hand-lettering face. Comes in Light, Medium, and Heavy.

Anago shares the same DNA as its sibling Macha, but is a completely different species than the former or any of my other sans serifs (Aaux Next, Air, Akagi Pro or Wasabi). Dimensions is redesigned font family based on Blackout font released as free font in 2005. The original blackout has been used especially for company or brand logo of fashion and music label in the world. In 2011, Blackout had evolved into this Dimensions font family of seven weights with roman and italics. They are one of the most condensed, black and skinny font in the world. All weights and italics have upper and lower cases, accented characters and small capital glyphs that can be used with OpenType smcp feature. There is high contrast version called Speedometer.

The Englishman William Caslon punchcut many roman, italic, and non-Latin typefaces from 1720 until his death in 1766. At that time most types were being imported to England from Dutch sources, so Caslon was influenced by the characteristics of Dutch types. He did, however, achieve a level of craft that enabled his recognition as the first great English punchcutter. The original Caslon specimen sheets and punches have long provided a fertile source for the range of types bearing his name. Identifying characteristics of most Caslons include a cap A with a scooped-out apex; a cap C with two full serifs; and in the italic, a swashed lowercase v and w. A few of the many interpretations from the early twentieth century were true to the source, as well as strong enough to last into the digital era. These include two from the American Type Founders company, Caslon 540 and the slightly heavier Caslon #3. Both fonts are relatively wide, and come complete with small caps, old style figures, and italics.

Unusual decorative capitals from embroidery work in a German church. Upper case has a diamond-shaped frame around each letter; lower case is just the letters without the diamond frame; and the ampersand gives just the diamond frame so you can use a different colour from the letter.

Normal and upright italic script fonts line a well-trodden path; left-leaning fonts (or "rightalics" as they're confusingly called), on the other hand, are a rarity. Here at Eclectotype Fonts we don't like to do things too conventionally, so here's Backstroke, a laid back script with a unique voice. With contextual alternates for start and end forms of certain characters, swash versions of L, Q and Z (surely the most used initial caps!), and a handful of stylistic sets, Backstroke is a restrained script. Stylistic sets are: 1. the start forms of i, j, m, n, and p are used always instead of only at word starts. 2. lower case ascenders get a whole lot loopier. 3. alternate versions of G, N and Y. 4. swash L, Q and Z. 5. swaps the default Polish script lslash for a more familiar version While fonts that lean the wrong way may be a bit more difficult to fit into your layouts than boring old regular italics, they will reward you with their individuality. Salto was developed by Karlgeorg Hoefer and introduced in 1952 by the foundry Gebr. Klingspor in Offenbach. The capital letters were drawn with a brush, the lower case with a broad-tipped pen developed by Hoefer especially for the task. Salto reflects the Zeitgeist of the 1950s, appearing frequently in advertisements during the years of the Wirtschaftswunder. The font’s extravagance and dynamic quality arise from the contrast between the strong, zestful capitals and the more reserved lower case letters.

HGB Info is a display typeface for my Linotype Nautilus Monoline. This came about while working on the corporate design for the municipality of Weissach im Tal. Shorter ascenders and descenders and a broader letter shape result in more compact word images. The ups and downs are cut vertically. This works particularly well in large degrees. This is the area of ​​application on signage and information systems.

Kornelis de Vries, a headmaster from the Dutch province of Friesland, cultivated new potato breeds that he named after pupils in his school. In the early 1900s he came up with the tasty Bintje (a Frisian girl’s name) and it became a big success – in Belgium and France it has remained the most popular potato for french fries to this day, more than a century since its introduction. Donald Roos took 10 kilos of fresh Bintje potatoes and cut the Bint typeface by hand with a short, sharp knife. He then inked each character once and printed it twice; the second, lighter printing is accommodated in the lower case alphabet. The Bint family offers a script to make the letters bounce up and down the baseline; with OpenType functionality the font randomly chooses each character from the upper- or lowercase alphabet. ‘Tabular lining figures’ will activate a series of negative numerals in boxes; ‘Discretionary ligatures’ activates specially designed letter combinations like ‘www’ as well as arrows and stars. Bint has a distinct, slightly rough handmade appearance, making it useful for a wide range of designs.

The source for these hand-drawn initials was an early 20th Century French alphabet book whose pages were displayed online at an image sharing site. This style typifies the Art Nouveau period, and makes a wonderful paragraph starter or "drop cap" for your printed projects. Some users may still want to compose headlines with this font, but be aware there are no punctuation marks, accents or kerning - just the twenty-six initials.

Here’s a revised and updated version of one of my oldies, based on the typeface Chic, designed by Morris Fuller Benton. The addition of small caps, improved kerning, and an expanded character set make this one an excellent choice for projects that demand grace, elegance and a bit of mischievous fun. This font contains the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

Herbert Post’s (1903-1978) blackletter fonts redesigned for nowadays’ use. Both font styles contain adorning swash caps. Typing N, o, and period, and activating the OT feature Ordinals produces an oldstyle number sign.

A modern Sans Serif — prosaic, designed geometrically, beautiful in large sizes All the dimensions of the font are based on Factor 10. The general principle of construction leads to slim forms and nearly equally wide characters. So the font appears very solid but is actually difficult to decipher in longer texts. Along with the ”normal“ Guhly Regular there are also the two versions Guhly Light and Guhly Bold, whereas in each only the vertical strokes [Guhly Light] or horizontal [Guhly Bold] have been changed in strength. The result is a very individual decorative effect which slightly reflects old circus and western scripts. The lower case characters in the version Guhly Book are, therefore, optimized to be suitable for longer texts in smaller font sizes — because after all, sometimes you should read a bit more than just the headline… The design of a shampoo bottle stands behind the creation of this sans serif display font. Prominent, clearly constructed forms with circular arcs define its appearance. This is a font primarily designed for use with capital letters — for all sorts of advertising purposes, headlines and titles. But lower case letters also belong to a good functional font; so, of course, Guhly includes them and ligatures for the more ”critical“ letter combinations as well as stylistic alternates for the letters K (or k), V (v) and o. As a decorative “encore”, the Guhly family also contains the “normal” weight in two variants: on the one hand the Guhly Cutout – these are letters without counter, as if the letters were cut out and the internal surfaces fell out; and on the other hand the Guhly stencil – as the name suggests, a stencil font with the typical bars that give a stencil the necessary cohesion.

A former lettering artist at Hallmark Cards, Rob Leuschke now has his own thriving design businesses, Alphabytes and the new TypeSETit. Growing up in St Charles, Missouri, where he still lives, Rob showed great artistic promise at an early age. He earned a BFA in graphic design at the University of Missouri at Columbia. After graduation, his stint at Hallmark Cards gave him the opportunity to learn from and work with some of the best lettering artists in the industry. Rob struck out on his own in 1987 and now boasts a long list of clients from all over the world. Rob has created over 250 custom typefaces, and his work has been exhibited in New York. Ambiance BT is Rob’s first typeface published by Bitstream, with more to follow.

Dutch type designer Max Kisman created this display FontFont in 1990. The family contains 2 weights and is ideally suited for poster and billboards and sports. FF Scratch provides advanced typographical support with features such as ligatures and case-sensitive forms. It comes with proportional lining figures.

Mistral is a loose running script based directly on the handwriting of its designer, Roger Excoffon. His goal was to create a typeface with a true handwritten style, but in this case, the writing looks as though it were done with a brush or heavy felt tip.
