Inspired by the strange, blocky lettering on the sides of a set of a set of plastic kitchen containers in my childhood home, 8th Avenue is a sophisticated, somewhat syncopated font with a retro look and feel that at the same time brings a very modern attitude to your design. 8th Avenue works well as display font for packaging, headlines and logos. Those pastel turquoise plastic boxes from the early 1950s, with white screen printed letters reading FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE etc. on one side were a simple quiet presence in our home back then and for decades after. Seeing them, even that soft blue-green colour felt like home. SUGAR, the soul survivor of that set has become one of those mundane items of daily life that somehow become simple icons of another time, ripe with memories. Obviously I had to make a font. It all started with a Portuguese soap packaging from the first half of the 20th Century. The 5 uppercase letters that spell NAZARÉ were sufficient to drive the creation of this design. Nazaré fits in a semi-serif category and it has a large contrast. It works outstandingly in display use specially in the bolder weights that have even more contrast. The regular weights have a more moderate contrast and an overall less extravagant design, fitting best in the typographical conventions. this provides a better render in text use. There is an interesting story about this vintage professional Mercedes typewriter I’ve used to make this font. My grandfather, who was a Yugoslavian partisan during the WWII captured it from a Wehrmacht command building during an attack, and he kept it in a perfect shape for so many years. After I inherited it, I wanted to share it’s uniqueness (as well as it’s story). I’ve intentionally kept it in it’s original condition - I haven’t replaced the ribbon that was some 34 years old (or more) before sampling the font, and it turned out really nice. One more important thing - I have used ONLY it’s original set of characters (Latin with some Balkan-based letters). With it’s untouched originality and uniqueness it fits to our modern culture perfectly. There are no compromises here - there are no popular @,#,$ and other characters you would expect in a font. While sketching for a music project logo, Donald DBXL Beekman looked at several wood type alphabets as a starting poing. One of these was No.120, patented in 1880 by William Hamilton Page. With its distinct diagonally cut serifs and round shapes cut off at top and bottom, it bore just the right feel for the project. DBXL digitized the alphabet, adding all characters needed for a full set. During this process all shapes were widened, tweaked and streamlined to enhance consistency and rhythm along the whole font. Ballet Mechanique is a custom designed font for musician Jeroen Borrenbergs, aka Ballet Mechanique. For his upcoming record releases Jeroen asked me to create a special font for him. As co-founder and graphic designer at Stoere Binken Design he creates his own artwork and therefor had very specific wishes. The font should be warm, soft and have soul. He gave me some sketches for his logo that I should use as a starting point. The result is a very narrow, kind of techno, monocased font called "Ballet Mechanique" (what else). After having served his purpose, Jeroen Borrenbergs allowed his font to be sold publicly. Jeroen Borrenberg’s debut work, in 1996, received hugely praising reviews. Muzik Magazine made Evolutionary Entities techno single of the month, Laurent Garnier and Mister C constantly played it in their sets and Morgan Geist just said “I won’t do a review here - let me just encourage all of y’all to listen to and/or pick up the new Eevolute 12″. Beautiful stuff - complex, melodic, soaked in just enough reverb to take it to another room. Check or regret.”
