In 1994, Edward Benguiat designed ITC Edwardian Script, an emotional, lyrical, even passionate calligraphic typeface. Its appearance was influenced by the look of writing with a steel pointed pen, an instrument which can be pushed as well as pulled, and which produces stroke contrast when pressure upon it is varied. The delicate, sophisticated letterforms of ITC Edwardian Script font were drawn and redrawn until the connective elements of the letters were perfected to create the look of true handwriting.

ITC Skylark, from designer Patty King, is an alphabet with a strong handwritten character and calligraphic influences. The figures look as though they were written with a broad-tipped pen on rough paper. The result is a light stroke contrast, irregular outer contours, pointed stroke endings and a clear slant to the right. These characteristics lend the font its spontaneity and liveliness. ITC Skylark is best used for headlines and short texts in point sizes of 12 and larger.

Sultan Free, designed by Sultan Maktari in 2005, is a freestyle Ruqaa and a winner in Linotype’s first Arabic Typeface Design Competition. The design is open, calligraphic, and very dynamic. This makes it suitable for large display sizes, especially in the area of advertising, while still functioning well as a text face. The font includes a matching Latin design and support for Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. It also includes proportional and tabular numerals for the supported languages.

Galdana font family is a Roman serifs typeface, whose most relevant characteristic is the slanted angle of its true italic, at seventeen degrees. Its design was inspired by one of the most prominent American calligraphers of the last century, the book designer Oscar Ogg. Galdana contains 18 styles: starting from thin to ending in a fat typeface. Mariné is a geometric sans but with the softness of humanistic strokes. It’s mild contrast and multiple different styles allow Mariné to work well as both a text and display font. It also includes an Up version and calligraphic features that add a touch of informality. Mariné is available in an extended family and is the close cousin of Amelia (available at MyFonts.com). All differences between Mariné and Amelia appear in the italic and Up versions.

Sultan-Mabsut, designed by Sultan Maqtari in 2018, is an Arabic typeface in the style of Maghribi (Moroccan Mabsut). This style, which originated in western North Africa, is characterized by a strong baseline and long, fluid, and curvaceous curves. It can be used in headlines or in text and gives a very fresh and calligraphic look. The font combines two methods of writing at one time (writing oriental and writing Moroccan). Ukrainian humanistic sans of universal purpose. The beautiful hand lettering on the sheet music cover for Will R. Anderson's "Good Night Dear" (circa 1908) features quaint, semi-calligraphic lettering in the Art Nouveau Style. The song itself was popularized by Billie Burke [best remembered as the Good Witch in “The Wizard of Oz”] in the musical comedy "Love Watches".

Lavery is a calligraphic display face, drawing its inspiration from the designs of the early years of the 20th century. It has an extensive range of ligatures and other opentype features and a delightfully hand-drawn feel. Lavery combines a great deal of character with clear legibility and a spirit of fun.

Many blackletter and calligraphic typefaces are elegant and can be used for items like invitations and liturgical or religious texts. Rankensteen is probably not one of them. It is crude and bizarre and with a somewhat menacing appearance. It seems more appropriate for a letter from a pirate than for a formal invitation.

In 1994, John Benson designed Balzano, Alexa and Caliban, three typefaces with a similar calligraphic character. Balzano differs from the other in its vertical figures, adding a static element to the otherwise lively, flowing components. Balzano is good for short texts and headlines, anywhere in which a personal, elegant look is desired.

Pragma ND is a sans serif typeface with calligraphic features. Its vital rhythm facilitates the reading of long texts. It also has an “authentic” italic imitating the movement of handwriting. We are very happy to announce the release of our first collaboration with master calligrapher, designer and illustrator Gabriel Martínez Meave from México. The first in the series of new designs is Wordless Script, an emotional calligraphic typeface published by Sudtipos. Speechless. Breathless. Wordless. There are letters that transcend simple functionality and sheer legibility, to be recognized instead by their style, their charm, their emotion. It’s like when we don’t remember the exact sentences, but we recall the tone of the voice of a loved one: it just doesn’t matter WHAT he or she said, but HOW he or she said it. Wordless Script is the font of choice for writing those things that go beyond words. Based on the connected-scripts of late 18th-century England, this typeface preserves the irregular finish and gestural strokes of the pointed nib. It is, so to speak, a personal rendition of the English roundhand as originally executed with the bird’s quill. Imbued with a Rococo, neoclassical, romantic spirit, Wordless radiates the gallantry of a time when the celebrated «douceur de vivre» that Talleyrand was so fond of was still alive and well; echoes of which still haunt us in our eclectic 21st-century, which has once again come to appreciate these magnificent styles of old. 2015 First Prize TipoType award. Neftali is a type family designed for continuous reading in long texts & editorial design, created as an interpretation of Pablo Neruda’s “Poema 20”. This work delivers a subtle experimentation of Baroque and Roman styles, rescuing features from some of the most successful chilean typefaces such as “Australis”, “Berenjena” and “Biblioteca”, along with its particular calligraphic details, medium weights, accentuated strokes, and wide curves that seek to project Pablo Neruda’s particular way of reciting. This typeface contains uppercase, lowercase, small caps, oldstyle, and tabular numbers; in addition to a true italic for every weight; and calligraphic details designed to compose his poems. A typography to talk about everything, except love… (Special thanks to: Francisco Gálvez & Patricio Truenos; without the help of the latter, this project wouldn’t have had an ending)

Richard Lipton’s inspiration for Englewood came from the calligraphic hand of Philip Grushkin. Lipton has always admired his somewhat loose but disciplined hand and felt that it was worthy of keeping this style alive in a typeface that could be a somewhat accurate emulation of the warmth and life found in these letterforms. Spontaneity is a challenge to capture in a type treatment but with Englewood, Lipton hopes to honor Mr. Grushkin with a design that works especially well for an invitation, a menu, or in any display setting that calls for an informal calligraphic hand. This single weight display script includes small caps — somewhat of a rarity for a handwritten script — for flexible typesetting, along with 42 alternates that include 18 contextual ligatures to simulate the appearance of spontaneous writing.

Rockner is a family of fraktur typefaces designed by the calligrapher/designer Julius de Goede. Like all Blackletter styles, fraktur evolved out of Northern Europe's medieval manuscript tradition. Fraktur was the most used Blackletter variety between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries. Unlike many similar fraktur font families, Rockner is available in three weights: Regular, Medium, and Bold. This flexibility allows for richer design possibilities. The OT fonts contain the many alternate characters, such as the long s and historical ligatures, which are often necessary for the setting of historical documents.

Designed by Jure Stojan, JY Shapa—his first serif family for JY&A Fonts—has a wide-pen, calligraphic feel, with the upper half of the letters reasonably conservative to aid recognition, but the lower half more decorative and dynamic to achieve a specific rhythm. The italics are more dynamic, with the upper halves more flowing, with Stojan taking greater liberties with the design. Ligatures such as ct and st are included, as well as small caps for all weights. The JY Shapa fonts come with over 5,000 kerning pairs each.
