Mark Stanczyk designed Linotype Typo American in 1999. The font is an excellent revival of American style typewriter type. As most of us can remember from our childhood years, or through old stories and movies, everyone used to type with typewriters before the invention of computers. Unlike computers, most individual typewriters only had one typestyle, or font, to chose from. To make matters worse, the letters in a typewriter font would wear down with use. Over time, text typed out on a typewriter would look more and more corroded, old, and uneven. Stanczyk has captured exactly these features in this “revival” font! Also like most older typewriter styles, Linotype Typo American’s letters are all mono-spaced, i.e., the letter i is the same width as the letter w. Typewriter letters also all tended to be cast in the same size, around 12 points or so. When using typewriter-style fonts, it is best to keep setting your text in similar sizes. (Of course, you can set really large and fun headlines with Linotype Typo American, too; if anything the unevenness of the design will come even more across in these applications.)

It took me 12 years to bring this extensive font family to completion. A lot has been changed, transformed, peeled and developed in all those years. For many of my projects I used it as my quarry and so it might have become something like a synthesis of all my imaginations and experiences. To me »Schnebel Sans« represents the optimal design of a contemporary grotesque that perfectly unites dynamics with statics. For copy text the typefaces are very legible, neutrally and remain in the background, but despite this generate the necessary tension when set as headlines. »Schnebel Sans« is available in 48 different styles. It is available as a Pro Font, containing West, East Greek, and Cyrillic or as the Schnebel Sans ME, also containing Arabic and Hebrew. Ogham (/ˈɒɡəm/ OG-əm, Modern Irish: [ˈoː(ə)mˠ]; Middle Irish: ogum, ogom, later ogam [ˈɔɣəmˠ] is an Early Medieval alphabet used primarily to write the early Irish language (in the "orthodox" inscriptions, 4th to 6th centuries CE), and later the Old Irish language (scholastic ogham, 6th to 9th centuries). There are roughly 400 surviving orthodox inscriptions on stone monuments throughout Ireland and western Britain, the bulk of which are in southern Munster. The largest number outside Ireland are in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The vast majority of the inscriptions consist of personal names. According to the High Medieval Bríatharogam, the names of various trees can be ascribed to individual letters. For this reason, ogam is sometimes known as the Celtic tree alphabet. The etymology of the word ogam or ogham remains unclear. One possible origin is from the Irish og-úaim 'point-seam', referring to the seam made by the point of a sharp weapon.

Fungia is the result of an experiment to remelt loose natural forms to a coherent structure of a typeface. The idea appeared as a kind of joke: what letters look like if based on the shape of mushrooms. In a sense the structure of�mushroom has some affinity to the structure of�a letter: a cap and a stalk remind�a serif and a stem respectively. So it was pretty easy to design such straight letters like I, E, L, F. The captivating challenge was to apply the idea on round letters (O, C, D, G), letters with diagonal (N, M, Z) and signs without serifs (digits, @, &). The result exceeded expectations. The typeface turned sophisticated and vibrant but absolutely consistent. It became capital-only font in one weight. Because of its opulent forms Fungia performs best in large size and short inscriptions. However it provides readability in small size as well. Fungia is more likely thing-in-itself. Initially it wasn't intended to solve specific design challenges. But the alleged scope could include book covers, posters and billboards, street signs, magazin spreads and all situations that demand�expressive typography. Fungia supports extended latin and russian cyrillic script systems.

Refresh was inspired and partly based on handwritten text from advertisements for a popular cola-based soft drink from the 1950s. I designed the missing characters in the handwriting style of the original. The Refresh family comes in three styles: - Lite- possibly the most elegant of the three styles -- use at larger sizes for greater legibility; - Med -of intermediate weight - more legible than Lite; - Blak - for bolder statements and best readabilty. Refresh, with its three styles, is ideal for any display work needing a feminine, handwritten effect. Use it for product branding, book covers, invitations, greeting cards where you're looking for charm and movement. Refresh has not been designed to be used with capital letters placed next to one another: it is not advisable to use text in "ALL CAPS". The best effects for headings and subheads are obtained with an initial upper case letter followed by lower case characters. Refresh contains over 250 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). Madelican is a beautiful combination of modern and classical calligraphy, inspired by the handwriting of Italian women and ancient manuscripts. I think calligraphy has an advantage for the alternate characters, Madelican has tons of possibilities for just one letter. My exploration of this fonts was not as easy as in my imagination, it took several trial and errors for the perfect balance of the style. Madelican is very suitable for weddings, book covers, greeting cards, logos, branding, business cards and certificates, even for any design work that requires a classic, formal or luxurious touch. Almost all letters have more alternate than others, it is fine because the limitations of the shape of the letters. It must be readable and legible. Every letter that I've chose are only the best on it and fit with the character style. Multi-lingual support and up to 16 stylistic alternates. EraMax 123 is a multi-layered display geometric sans serif, meant to be set BIG, for large, colourful statements. It's the perfect face for packaging, posters & branding, where a strong, colourful voice is needed... Did I mention posters? The "Max" in EraMax comes from the ultra bold weight, but also, and mainly as a tip of the hat to Peter Max, the designer and artist, known for creating so many images which have come to be emblematic of the sixties and seventies. The bold gradient effects in some of his posters were the inspiration behind the dotted and striped layers. This font's vintage flavour truly stand out in a retro setting, but also has a modern flavour that lends it the flexibility to work well in a more contemporary context. This is the second of what is to be an extended family of typefaces based on the original hand painted signage found in the T. H. & B Railway station in Hamilton Ontario, a classic Art Moderne building, designed by the New York architectural firm of Fellheimer and Wagner for the Toronto Hamilton and Buffalo Railway line and completed in 1933.

I designed Conium to be a sister font to Nightshade. It was meant to have the appearance of the hemlock plant without being too derivative; it’s thin drooping stems conjure images of Hamlet’s mad Ophilia clutching sickly weeds while thinking them to be flowers. It also projects the appearance of an ice cold, wrought iron, cemetery gate. The sort that one might pass on a damp overcast day. A fitting compliment to an Edward Gorey illustration from top, right down to the frigid ground from which it sprang. Baker Street was inspired by a recent trip to London, England where I happened upon a bustling pub with beautiful typographic signage. Early sketches created an array of specialized ligatures from which the font really took shape. The family is comprised of regular, italic, inline and a rustic textured style. Baker Street delivers a multitude of Opentype features, primarily including hundreds of discretionary ligatures that connect letter pairs through varying flourishes. These distinct ligatures are used in combinations between two capital letters, two lowercase letters, uppercase to lowercase pairs and specific number combinations. For a number of capital and lowercase letters, large swashes expand above and below the characters. Contextual swashes are also applied to some characters when placed at the beginning or end of a word. Stylistic Alternatives and Titling Alternatives offer distinct style variations to capital letters. Tabular Lining and Oldstyle Figures provide several numerical alternatives. Lastly, the family also includes two sets of ornaments created specially to work with Baker Street’s style. With all that, Baker Street provides each and every user the tools to solve their own case. Links was built adhering to a strict grid of 'linked' squares; and comes with special "Grid Glyphs" that line up perfectly with all characters. Many typefaces are distinctive or attractive at the expense of legibility and versatility. Not so the Optima® family. Simultaneously standing out and fitting in, there are few projects or imaging environments outside of its range. Although Optima is almost always grouped with sans serif typefaces, it should be considered a serifless roman. True to its Roman heritage, Optima has wide, full-bodied characters – especially in the capitals. Only the E, F and L deviate with narrow forms. Consistent with other Zapf designs, the cap S in Optima appears slightly top-heavy with a slight tilt to the right. The M is splayed, and the N, like a serif design, has light vertical strokes. The lowercase a and g in Optima are high-legibility two-storied designs. Optima can be set within a wide choice of line spacing values – from very tight to very open. In fact, there are few limits to the amount of white space that can be added between lines of text. Optima also benefits from a wide range of letter spacing capability. It can be set quite tight, or even slightly open – especially the capitals. If there are any guidelines, Optima should be set more open than tight. It’s not that readability is affected that much when Optima is set on the snug side; it’s just that the unhurried elegance and light gray typographic color created by the face are disrupted when letters are set too tight. Optima is also about as gregarious as a typeface can be. It mixes well with virtually any serif design and a surprisingly large number of sans serif faces. Inspired by a biography of Coco Chanel and trying to capture the quintessential mood of classical fashion elegance, Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini designed Coco Gothic looking for the effect that the first geometric sans typefaces (like Futura, Kabel or the italian eponyms like Semplicità) had when printed on paper. The crisp modernist shapes acquired in printing charme and warmth through a slight rounding of the corners that is translated digitally in the design of Coco Gothic. This signature touch is enhanced by the inclusion of light humanist touches to the proportions of the letters, resulting in the unique mix that makes Coco Gothic one of our best sellers, with a look that is both contemporary and vintage. After six years from the original project (that has spawned in the meanwhile successful families like Cocogoose and Coco Sharp), we went back to the design to completely redraw and expand the original family, creating with a Pro version that has better on-screen readability, a wider weight range, variable type versions and more language coverage (with Coco Gothic Arabic adding a new script to the latin, greek and Cyrillic of the original). Coco Gothic Pro comes in three subfamilies, each with seven weights with matching italics and featuring an extended character set with open type support for small caps, ligatures, alternates, European languages, Greek and Cyrillic alphabets. The original, body-text optimised Coco Gothic and Coco Gothic Alternate subfamilies have been kept for compatibility with the previous version, while a new Coco Gothic Display subfamily has been developed with a complete redesign aimed at display usage, featuring tighter spacing and optimised letterforms. A distinguishing feature of Coco Gothic Pro is the inclusion of ten alternate historical sets that allow you to use the typeface as a true “typographic time machine”, selecting period letterforms that range from art deco and nouveau, to modernism and to eighties’ minimalism. Equipped with such an array of historical variants, Coco Gothic Pro becomes an encyclopedia of styles from the last century, ready to transform itself and adapt to the mood of your text.
