With the clear, simple elegance of its sans serif forms and the warmly human touches of its tapering stems, the Optima family has proved popular around the world. In 2002, when it was finally possible to produce digital alphabets without technical limitations and compromises, and more than fifty years after the first sketches, an expansion and redesign of the Optima family was completed and released as Optima nova. Hermann Zapf and Japanese type designer, Akira Kobayashi, collaborated on the project, which included re-working of the existing weights and the addition of several new weights: small caps, old style figures, light, heavy, and condensed. The original Optima was never manufactured with a real italic, only an oblique version of the roman. Tejuela (Spanish for “Wood Shingle”) is a neoclassical type inspired by the wooden architecture of the ancient churches of Chiloé, an archipelago in southern Chile; which are World Heritage Sites. This typeface has rough and broken forms but with soft strokes. The neoclassical characteristic of Tejuela is due to the architecture of these temples, which belong to this style but adapted to wood with excellent quality and ingenuity by Chiloé builders using a material available in the area. Therefore, this typeface reflects the tradition of the fonts of that period, but adapted to the coarseness and warmth of the southern wood of the world. Tejuela is useful for extensive texts in literature, history, art and heritage; as also for short and large phrases in headlines according to the occasion. Tejuela has eight variants in Roman and Italic versions, with small caps, Old Style and Lining numbers, ligatures, alternative glyphs, fractions, among other OpenType features; special mention to the capital letters Swash of the italic versions, which serve to generate delicate compositions. Devin is designed mainly for the benefit of the advertising industry, and it surely is a nice typeface for headings, isn't it? And you should see what a nice body type it makes! I had no other typeface in mind when working with it, but I can now find several typefaces it is related to. It reminds of the egyptienne group, but I did't really plan that. The name Devin is taken from my birth region. There is a castle with that name on the northern Adriatic coast (known even from Rilke's Duino elegies - Duino is another name of the same castle). A castle ruin called Devin, too, can be found on a height above the Danube in Slovakia, not far away from its capital Bratislava. Devin was released in 1994.

The Latin, or Roman, alphabet was originally adapted from the Etruscan alphabet during the 7th century BC to write Latin. Since then it has had many different forms, and been adapted to write many other languages. According to Roman legend, the Cimmerian Sibyl, Carmenta, created the Latin alphabet by adapting the Greek alphabet used in the Greek colony of Cumae in southern Italy. This was introduced to Latium by Evander, her son. 60 years after the Trojan war. There is no historical evidence to support this story, which comes from the Roman author, Gaius Julius Hyginus (64BC - 17AD). The earliest known inscriptions in the Latin alphabet date from the 6th century BC. It was adapted from the Etruscan alphabet during the 7th century BC. The letters Y and Z were taken from the Greek alphabet to write Greek loan words. Other letters were added from time to time as the Latin alphabet was adapted for other languages.

Happily living in the world of kitschy cross-cultural fonts of the kind found on restaurant awnings around the US, Pseudos is blithely unconcerned with legibility. Instead, it embraces its own benign exoticism and revels in its own chicanery! Pseudographia’s standard letterforms are angular Roman forms. Leo is an economic magazine and book face meant for use in sizes suitable for immersive reading, with different cuts optimized for different body copy size ranges, like footnotes and legal text. Designed with the explicit intent of relaying information without calling attention to itself, this typeface places itself squarely on the "function" side of the eternal debate about form versus content. The roman Leo fonts were built with as little ornamentation as possible, with wedge serifs, a high x-height and a skeleton somehwat rooted in the designers' reflections on the modern, post-war Dutch archetype. Rather than follow traditional models with entirely different forms, contracted widths and steep slants, the Leo italics deliver naturally subtle emphasis in reading by closely relating to the forms, stance and rhythm of their roman counterparts. Essay is an elegant serif typeface intended for setting books, with many stylistic alternates and other typographic goodies, designed by Stefan Ellmer. It is a highly legible text face with a natural flow of reading. This is enhanced by a slight slant of the roman, the combination of open and closed apertures and the amalgamation of organic strokes and counters with a static, fully straight baseline. Essay Text Regular looks back to the spirit of the french Renaissance, when the roman typographic letterforms came to full emancipation. Departing from that historical reference, Essay Text gets rid of all sentimental antiquity and becomes a contemporary interpretation of the “archetypes” of that period. Essay Text Italic refers to that more vaguely, resulting in a formalised look with fairly upright and open shapes and little cursiveness. As in the Renaissance, before the mating of roman and italic, Essay Text Italic works as a separate text face and a perfect secondary type. The name Essay derives from the literary meaning of the word, attempt or trial.
