Now that there are more Studio K fonts than there are characters in the alphabet it occured to me that I should produce a sampler font that showcased them all: hence Variety. The 'What the font' experts amongst you should enjoy identifying individual characters, but to start you off, the featured fonts in the font title are, in order of appearance: Alma Mater Outline Shadow, Aspidistra, Signpost, Cafe de Paris, Showbiz, Barrowboy and Soft Rock.

The intent: To create a pretty much »ordinary«, even classical font with its most striking characteristic being the inclusion of the “crooked l.” As a model, I used the »mother of all sans serifs«, Akzidenz Grotesk from Berthold, with its beginnings going back to the 19th century. Analogue is so to say a new interpretation of Akzidenz Grotesk from ingoFonts. All characters — following the model — have been newly designed. And if you want to emphasize the shape of the hooked foot even more, you can also activate the alternate styles for d, h, m, n (Style Set 1). Conversely, the alternate a somewhat softens the “hooked” impression (Style Set 2). The slanted versions — it isn’t truly a real cursive font — are noticeably stronger with 13° than the italics in comparable fonts, and were given a round e with a mind of its own which distinguishes itself considerably compared to the upright characters in the overall appearance of the font. More modern and formal solutions in detail were chosen for some of the characters, for example the M was given lightly slanted sides; the a reflects the curves of the s; the “feet” of a, l and t match; the flared legs of K and R became a “foot”, too. I don’t think I’m a capricious person, but right now, due to the enormous amount of renovation work on our home, I do get bad moods quite often! Capricious is a hand painted all-caps font: I used my favourite Chinese ink, a brush and very rough paper to get the desired ‘eroded’ effect. It is quite a heavy display font, so I wouldn’t really set a text in it, but it works really well for headlines, catching titles and products that need some pepper!

A pleasant Art Nouveau hand lettered title is featured on the sheet music cover for "You Brought A New Kind of Love to Me". The song is from the 1930 Paramount film "The Big Pond" featuring Maurice Chevalier and Claudette Colbert. The original lettering was done with a round point pen nib, and showed a lot of small inconsistencies. For the digital version it has been "tightened up" a bit and is now available as Nouveau Fashion JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Polke is a single weight display face brimming with style and charm but simultaneously exuding impressive core strength and a vibrant personality. Floating ball terminals rub shoulders with contrasting sharp and rounded letterforms to produce a distinctively decorative headline font built on robust foundations. Polke's name is derived from the striking terminal dots which dominate the character set, creating a Polka-Dot effect throughout. I also had the artist Sigmar Polke in mind which explains the spelling, and so the two ideas simply morphed together.

Franko Luin, Carniola's designer, on this typeface: Carniola is a pastiche of different type designs from the beginning of the 20th century, mostly American. I am not very fond of it, but was convinced to release it by someone who needed a typeface with a time typical feeling. On the other hand: why not use the original typefaces from that period? Carniola has its name from the Latin name of Kranjska/Krain, a principality in the former Habsburg monarchy (Austria-Hungary), now part of modern Slovenia.

Tritura is my personal take on textura fonts. Several methods of drawing were used, both analog and digital, to bring its overall rough feel. Each and every character was designed not from historical references, but from my view on this very peculiar typographic style. Instead of following established rules of character construction, I preferred to just keep in mind the mechanics of the pens used in textura drawings, as well as the little I already knew from the style, to create my own characters from there.
