Geronimo is a rough poster script done in the spirit of brush calligraphy experiments conducted by American calligrapher and historian, Professor Alexander Nesbitt. This particular approach to brush script uses a pointed brush. Although Nesbitt considered the pointed brush corruptive and not at all suited to present day western letter forms, he put forth that with enough control of the brush (keeping it upright, maintaining stroke evenness, etc) even an unexperienced letterer can easily draw current day letters, though the result will always show characteristics of the letterer's own handwriting. Geronimo is a great choice for entertainment design, like book covers, film poster and packaging, and CD inserts. It also is a great overall display design for anything that seeks to depict adventure or an environment with a rough human element. Many alternates are sprinkled throughout the font.

I'm happy to present you my new Romanesque font from the Codex Gigas. The manuscript was created in the early 13th century in the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice in Bohemia. The codex was written in a handwriting atypical for the 13th century, which is actually a late version of the Carolingian minuscule. Texts about repentance and exorcism were written in large Majuscule (Square Capitals (Imperial Roman capitals written with a brush)). Majuscules first incised in stone more than two millennia ago, married to minuscule letterforms that evolved from manuscript hands of the eighth and ninth centuries. Majuscule font is the name given to a type of decorative upper-case letters used in inscriptions and, typically, at the start of a section of text in medieval manuscripts. They are characterized by their straight forms unlike rounded in Lombardic capitals with thick, curved stems. Majuscule capitals were also used to write words or entire phrases. The text is divided into words, punctuation marks are used consistently – periods indicate the end of a sentence and the middle of a phrase. Veronika is a semi-serif text face, available in three styles: Regular, Italic, and Bold. All three faces are available in OpenType format, with both lining and old-style figures. Grüger, a German artist and designer, first began the design of her typeface by writing out its letterforms with a wooden stylus. She wanted to create a new semi serif face that had uniform stroke widths, but still maintained some aspects of calligraphy. Veronika achieves this; the terminals that begin the first strokes of most letters are round and bulbous, as if the writing instrument added extra emphasis on that spot. This adds a dynamic, movement-like quality to texts designed with Veronika. Aside from some sans serif-ness, Veronika appears similar to old style typefaces from the renaissance: classical inscriptions inspired the proportions of the capital letters, and the lower case letters stem from Carolinian minuscule. These proportions allow Veronika to function very well in text and at small sizes. However, only when you design larger headlines, logos, or other elements with Veronika, will you notice all of its special qualities, like its weight distribution and stroke characteristics.

My motivation for designing the Lalibela family (which is based on Bodoni) was to pay homage to Ethiopic script. The script has been around for about 3 000 years, but I took artistic licence to deviate from the original model and add personal touches. I chose Bodoni as a historical model because of its display value and not its text size use because the extreme contrast made it difficult to read at small sizes. A Modern typeface characterized by consistently horizontal stress, flat and un-bracketed serifs, and a high contrast between thin and thick strokes, were the final step in typography two-hundred-year journey away from calligraphy. The austerity, simplicity and greater contrast style was perfected.Contrary to all the refinements in Bodoni, I have revisited calligraphy with the font Lalibela that mimics Ethiopic Script. It was drawn with a much larger x height and less geometric than Bodoni for its primary use as a display font. For example, a lot of italic serifs were added to the roman face as well as 16 additional ligatures to obtain more a feel of calligraphy. I made the serifs thicker and bracket one side with straight steps obtaining a reduced contrast to withstand breaking up at smaller sizes.An additional variant, "Lalibela Alternate" was designed to provide an interesting mixing possibilities with the Bold face for more expressive headlines.

I’m a bit of a sucker for neon lights, especially in big cities. My favourite city is Tokyo, with its brightly coloured billboards and its back alleys full of neon-lit eateries. At first sight, Neon Goo is a slightly warped font, with some funny looking glyphs and a generous spacing. When you start using it, you’ll find out that the glyphs do complement each other! Neon Goo comes with all diacritics and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.

Kontras has high contrast at vertical and horizontal emphasis. When analyzing characters as a whole, it has contrast at style and practice too. Although has not much alternative characters, it provides decorative and grift effects because of this characteristic. Kontras is ideal for brand building, packet designs, decorative titles and so on. Letuncial is a sans-serif typeface in which the shapes of the letters are derived from uncial, a writing style in the early medieval period. Like uncial, it has no true upper-case letters. Rather it has two sets of letters that are interchangeable. Slik is a type family developed with packaging in mind. It started as one word in the boldest weight while working on an update of the Swedish liquorice brand »Läkerol« , a rejected proposal with the logotype in all upper case letters. It has very characteristic elements and is still simple and consistent in a way that is suitable in packaging design. The family consists of seven weights from Ultralight to Extrabold. It contains some alternative characters more suitable for text & numbers for pricing.

Appelstroop literally means ‘Apple Syrup’ in Dutch, but it is also know as Apple Butter; a slightly sweet & sour goo that you can use to sweeten things, or, as we do in Holland, spread it on a sandwich. Dean Martin starred in four movies as Matt Helm, the titular character in a series of spy novels by Donald Hamilton. Martin’s version of the government counter-agent followed his TV persona – a fun-loving ladies man who (in this case) just happened to be a spy. The movie poster for 1966’s “The Silencers” has its title hand lettered in an extra bold sans serif stencil style. This is now available as Spy Stencil JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Kettering 205 is a geometric slab-serif with Art Deco influences, such as lowered crossbars on many characters, and a crossed W. It includes old style non-aligning (lower case) numbers, both proportional and tabular as well as accented characters for Central European languages. It’s a highly individual looking font, but retains good legibility coupled with striking looks as a display font. The Kettering 205 family comprises of six weights and is closely related to Kettering 105, its less Deco flavoured cousin.

An image spotted online showed a rendering of a ladies’ fashions storefront that had appeared in the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company’s 1939 brochure. The signage consisted of the hand lettered word ‘Apparel’, and was done in a variant of the Art Deco stencil style of lettering that’s most recognizable in Futura Black. From these few sign letters came the inspiration for a digital font of the same name, Apparel JNL – which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Just like a nice breakfast, Kitchen Stink is a great way to start the day! :) You may already have guessed that the fontname is the result of a wordplay. Sometimes it's funny how a single letter can completely change the meaning of a word. In this case! With this font, you are dealing with a gentle mixture of a basic handwritten font, a comic font and oldschool grafitti! The result is this steady, sometimes a bit off, but legible crunchy handwritten font!

Cutlass was just for fun. A year ago or so [2009, maybe], someone on typophile showed a scan of the word "Ciruelo". I liked it. Those were the only letters I had and no one ever came up with the name of the original font that I saw. It doesn't matter as I went far afield as I designed, as usual. It's just a swashbuckling bit of fun. OpenType 476 Glyphs from my usual set minus the superior and inferior figures. Enjoy!
