Based on some vintage metal type initial monograms, Long and Thin Initials JNL reproduces this condensed spur serif design in digital form.

The original inspiration for Blue Parrot came from a short scene in the classic film Casablanca. For just a few seconds, the exterior of Ferrari's Blue Parrot night club is shown, complete with a wonderful hand-lettered sign... all in capital letters. Blue Parrot JNL was originally released in 2006, and it wasn't long before a few people noted that the font would also look good with a lower case alphabet. The idea of adding in lower case kicked around for a couple of years until Jeff Levine finally completed a revision of the font. In this version there's also an expanded character set thanks to the creative input of Michael Hagemann of Font Mesa.

P22 Kirkwall is an unusual and elegant design. The upper case letters have a slightly curved stem that ends in a small serif and wedge crossbars. The lower case letters have a fluid and easy design with end-hooks and long leading serifs. Kirkwall Trim and Bold Trim styles contain an alternate set of lower case characters without the long leading serifs and end-hooks. My son Sam turned 12 and all of a sudden he cares for his hairdo. It needs to be just so, not too long, not too short, with a lot of gel to hold it in place. ;-) He just had a haircut when I was creating this font, so now you know where the Haircut part comes from. The Holistic part is something that sort of sounded ok. Holistic Haircut is a nice, handmade display font. Happenstance came out of a play session with Bezier curves with a sense of fun built into its being. First came play, then came work. Thomas Edison once said,”Creativity is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” Nikola Tesla thought the opposite. In this case, what started as inspiration took a lot of perspiration to corral into a usable font. So maybe the reality is a) different for different people or b) somewhere in the middle. Just sayin’.

Swanville developed as part of a train font that eventually became LetterTrain. The letters of Swanville are bold, have a funny “serif” on the top but not on the bottom, and when the letters have interiors, the interior has the shape of the letter. Lower-case letters are smaller versions of the upper-case letters. Because development of this face stopped long ago, it has a limited character set.

"Grunge Typography? I invented it!" claims Chank Diesel. Badoni was created in 1993 for use in CAKE, a fanzine that reveled in grunge music. As creative director of CAKE, Chank wanted the magazine's design to reflect the music it glorified. Kurt Cobain was alive and miserable. Soundgarden had long hair. Seattle was everywhere. Chank's answer was Badoni, a gritty and distressed typeface that is a sign of the grunge glory years.

ITC Drycut is the work of Vancouver-based designer Serge Pichii and gives a twist to the tradition of heavy, woodcut-like typefaces. The font includes all the realistic features of a true woodcut, sharp edges, white cut marks and black slivers. The slivers around the edges suggest traces left after awkward movements of a knife, which are often visible on old woodcuts...Folk artists often didn't care much about refining their carvings and the slivers would have been left as long as the letters remained readable." The lower case alphabet is actually small caps proportioned to match the capitals. The letters of ITC Drycut have a slight slant to the right which lends the font a dynamic character."

Beware: Here be Dragons! It Be Dangeroues to Venture Yonder! This warning, inscribed on a rock at the entrance of a cave in an inaccessible mountain in the far north of Scotland, provided the inspiration for the font DragonFyre. While I have not seen the actual rock myself, I have based the font on an accurate drawing of the original inscription. DragonFyre speaks of lands beyond our ken, of wistful faerie kingdoms, of dark happenings and white magic. Use it at your peril, for its very use will conjure up worlds long forgotten, places of faeries, elves and hobgoblins, of ogres and giants. Those who read texts written in this font may well have their lives strangely changed. I have included a complete character set of 242 characters; upper and lower case; as well as all accented and special characters. All characters have been carefully letterspaced and kerned. For maximum dramatic impact I suggest you use combinations of both upper- and lower-case characters.

Buntisland (we wonder where we came up with that name from... another subconscious whim), is Greater Albion Typefounders blackletter release for Christmas 2016. The family consists of four typefaces- regular, weathered, shaded and shadowed, and has it's origin in a design challenge which came up in conversation, as all the best ones do. In this case it was 'design a legible all capitals black letter...' Challenge accepted and completed!

Gloria Monoline is a text serif with an editorial focus designed by Ikhsan Maulana. The idea for a typography job came from a design school letter-making exercise: Get a pair of scissors and some large sheets of paper, and start cutting. Huffer is a chunky and irregular sans-serif font (with a few serifs) that simulates the look of letters crudely cut out of paper. The basic letters were originally inspired by an early 1970s instructional filmstrip dealing with the dangers of glue sniffing. Further inspiration came from other sources of 1960s display lettering. The lower case is almost as tall as the upper case allowing for a mix and match between cases to achieve a more lively display effect. Huffer Pro includes ligatures as well as Cyrillic and Central European character sets with a total of over 500 glyphs.

ITC Farmhaus is the work of British designer Tim Donaldson and is, in his own words, Neil Young meets Paul Renner." Donaldson borrowed the perfect circles and clean lines of Renner's drawings for Futura and gave them jagged edges and uneven, thick strokes. Farmhaus contains one set of capitals and two sets of lower case letters."

Nouveau Crayon is based on Crayon Crumble, a font I made a long time ago. I changed a lot of glyphs and added a whole bunch of new ones. It has become quite a good looking font to be honest: oodles of crayon goodness, heaps of crumbling bits and a lot of expression. The lettering is based on a neon-and-bulb wall sign for a long-closed cafeteria on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, Florida. The 'b', 'd', 'k' and 'l' have unusually high verticals.

Electrical Tape is a mono-case display type. The idea came from generating custom letters using pieces of electrical tape. The over all design was then influenced by the graffiti subgenre as well as a hint of constructivist influence. Recommended applications of the font are for display purposes as well as digital media.

I realized I didn't have that many serif fonts, so I started sketching and came up with John Brown. John Brown is named after the sheriff in the Bob Marley song 'I Shot The Sheriff'. It is an all caps font, but upper and lower case can be freely interchanged for that great 'natural' look.
